GEM TALENT

Chapter 41: 41: THE BATTLE BEFORE THE BATTLE

---------------

The taxi pulled away from the school gates, leaving the cheers of his classmates behind, and as the car wound its way toward the Blackpool training ground, William felt the transition between his two worlds happening once again.

The excitement of being a "star" at school was a pleasant distraction, but as the familiar sight of the practice pitches came into view, his mind shifted back into the professional gear that was required for survival in the Championship.

He paid the driver and stepped out into the cool, salty air of the coast, feeling a familiar tightness in his chest because he knew that the expectations on his shoulders were growing with every passing day. Every step he took toward the main building felt heavier than the last, yet there was a sense of purpose

in his stride that hadn't been there a few weeks ago.

When he entered the player's lounge, the atmosphere was quieter than the chaotic

Passage of his school, and he immediately spotted the three men who had become the pillars of the team. Fernandes and Coleman were sitting in their usual spots, their faces etched with the fatigue of years spent in the professional game, while Morgan sat directly opposite them with a tactical board resting

against his knee.

These three men were the heartbeat of the locker room, and after the coaching staff, they were the most respected figures in the entire

club. William took a deep breath and approached them with a polite nod, making

sure to show the proper respect to the veterans who had seen and done it all

before he was even born.

"Good afternoon, sirs,"

William said softly, standing at the edge of their

circle until Fernandes looked up and gestured for him to take a seat. They welcomed him with short, appreciative nods, and he quickly realized that they were deep in a discussion about the upcoming fixtures and the general direction of the season.

William sat down quietly, choosing to listen rather than speak, because he knew that being in the presence of these experienced players was a rare education that no textbook could ever provide. He watched as Morgan pointed

to a set of notes on the table, his eyes sharp and focused as he broke down the team's current standing in the league.

"You know, we actually have a real shot at getting to the top of the table if we play our cards right," Morgan said, his voice low and gritty as he looked from Fernandes to Coleman.

"We're sitting in 7th position right now, which is a solid foundation, but we can't afford to be complacent because the gap between us and

the top four is closing fast. We have to beat Bristol City this weekend to keep the momentum going, and then we have to shift our focus to the second league matches while remembering that we're still alive in the FA Cup third round."

He paused to let the weight of his words sink in, and William felt a surge of adrenaline at the mention of the FA Cup because it was a tournament he had grown up watching on television with his father.

"We shouldn't slack off, not even for a second,"

Morgan continued, turning his gaze toward William for a brief moment before looking back at the veterans.

"One bad week can ruin an entire season's worth of hard work, so we need everyone to

be firing on all cylinders."

William sat there, soaking in the intensity of the

conversation, and he realized that he loved being in this environment more than anywhere else in the world. He preferred the company of these serious, driven men over the lighthearted teasing of his school friends because he knew that their high standards would push him to become a better player and a stronger man.

The room was silent for a moment as the players contemplated the road ahead, but

then Fernandes interrupted the silence with a stern expression on his face.

"I had a long discussion with the gaffer this morning," Fernandes said, referring to the manager, "and he made it very clear that today's training session is going to be incredibly intense.

He wants everyone to be pushed beyond their

physical and mental limits today because he's worried that some people are getting too comfortable with our recent wins."He then turned his full attention toward William, his dark eyes locking onto the teenager's face with an intensity that made William sit up straighter.

"Coleman explained everything to me about the opposition you've been facing from some of the other boys in the squad,"

Fernandes said, his voice softening slightly but remaining firm. "There are some people in that locker room who aren't happy about your rise, and they will try to use their words to bring you

down or make you feel like you don't belong here."

William felt a lump form in his throat as he thought about the cold glares and the whispered comments from some of the older, disgruntled players who felt he had taken their spot.

"You need to ignore that noise," Fernandes advised, leaning forward to emphasize his point. "But more importantly, you need to take their words and use them as fuel for your own growth. If they say you're too young, prove you're more mature than them; if they say you're too small, show them you're faster and smarter. By doing that, you will always be ten steps ahead of them, and their bitterness

will eventually become your strength.

" He reached out and placed a heavy, calloused hand on William's shoulder, a gesture of solidarity that meant more to the boy than any trophy ever could.

"The truth is, William, you are likely only temporary here because a talent like yours is destined for the biggest clubs in the world,"

Fernandes added with a knowing smile.

"But right now, in this moment, you are a part of us, and we look after our own."

Hearing those words—the recognition of his talent combined with the acceptance into their brotherhood—was too much for William to handle. The pressure of living alone, the stress of school, and the constant battle to prove

himself finally boiled over, and he felt hot tears begin to track down his vheeks despite his best efforts to stay composed.

He quickly looked down, feeling embarrassed by his sudden display of emotion, but he wasn't met with judgment or ridicule. Instead, he felt the steady presence of Morgan and Coleman as they moved closer to console him, their hands resting on his back with a quiet, fatherly comfort.

"It's alright, lad," Coleman whispered, his voice like rough sandpaper.

"We know it's a lot to carry on such young shoulders, but you don't have to carry it all by yourself." William wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for these men who had seen the person behind the professional athlete.

Morgan gave him a final pat on the shoulder and leaned in close, his expression turning thoughtful.

"I have some technical advice for you regarding your positioning during the transition from defense to attack," Morgan said, "but

I'll explain all of that to you later when we have more time to look at the film. For now, I want you to clear your head and get ready for the physical battle that's about to start."

The four of them stood up as one, moving with a dynchronized grace as they headed toward the dressing room to change into their training gear.

As they entered the locker room, the air was thick with the smell of liniment and the sound of heavy metal music playing in the background. Other players were arriving, some laughing and others looking focused, but the atmosphere shifted the moment Fernandes stepped into the center of the room.

He clapped his hands together with a sound like a gunshot, silencing the chatter and drawing every eye toward him.

"Listen up!" Fernandes shouted, his voice echoing off the metal lockers.

"Change quickly! Everybody is heading straight to the gym room first. We're doing a full hour of high-intensity gym work before we even touch a ball on the pitch today!"

A few of the players groaned at the prospect of a grueling strength session, but they didn't dare argue with the captain. William quickly pulled on his training shirt and laced up his sneakers, feeling the tears from earlier replaced by a cold, hard determination.

He followed Fernandes, Coleman, and Morgan out of the locker room and toward the gym, his mind focused on the challenge ahead. He knew that the "dual life" he was leading was difficult, but with the support of these veterans, he felt like he could survive anything.

As they stepped into the gym and the smell of iron and sweat hit him, William took a deep breath and prepared to push himself further than he had ever gone before.
