GEM TALENT

Chapter 36: 36: THE CHALLENGE BEGINS

The silence in the center circle was so heavy that it felt like a physical weight pressing down on every player's shoulders while the midday sun beat down on their necks.

Coach Lincoln stood in the very middle of the group with his boots planted firmly in the dirt, and his eyes moved slowly from face to face

like a judge preparing to deliver a final sentence. Beside him, Adams remained

perfectly still, holding his clipboard like a shield as he watched the reactions of the men gathered around them.

The tension was thick enough to choke on, and

every player knew that the next few minutes would either pull the team together or tear it apart for good because the air was filled with the scent of sweat and the invisible electricity of a coming storm.

Lincoln cleared his throat, and when he finally spoke, his voice was a low, dangerous rumble that commanded absolute attention from everyone present.

"I have called you all here because I have seen things on this pitch today that I will not tolerate in my football club," Lincoln began, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward the senior players who were standing with their arms crossed.

"I have seen whispering, I have seen mockery, and I have seen players turning their backs on their own teammates because of rumors and petty jealousy. Let me make one thing very clear to every single one of you standing here today: I will not condone any nonsense or mockery from anyone in this squad, regardless of how many games you have played or how much money you earn because this club is built on respect."

The coach took a step forward, his presence growing even larger as he addressed the core of the issue that was poisoning the locker room and making the younger players feel like outcasts.

"Whether a player is here on a temporary loan or has signed a permanent contract for five years, it does not change the fact that we are one unit working toward one goal," he shouted, his voice echoing off the distant training walls and cutting through the quiet morning air.

"A loanee wears the same crest on his chest as the rest of you, and if you cannot show him the same respect and unity that you show your brothers, then you do not belong on this grass. We win as a team, or we fail as a group of individuals who were too small-minded to look past their own egos, and I will personally see to it that anyone who disrupts our harmony finds themselves watching the game from the

stands."

As Lincoln spoke, William felt a tiny spark of hope in his chest, but when he glanced across the circle, that hope was quickly dampened by what he saw. Reed and Bennet were standing side-by-side, and even though they were keeping their mouths shut to avoid the coach's anger, their eyes were filled with a sharp,

mocking light.

Lincoln then turned his body slightly so that he was facing William directly, and the entire squad followed his gaze, making the young midfielder feel like he was standing under a powerful spotlight.

"Now, I want to address the elephant in the room because I know you have all been whispering about the news from Italy and what it means for our formation," Lincoln said, his expression becoming even more serious as he prepared to drop a bombshell.

"Regarding the reports of Kyle being linked to Blackpool FC, I can confirm today that the rumors are true. We are moving forward to sign him on a permanent deal from Inter Milan, and the board is currently discussing with Milan to bring him here as soon as possible."

The words hit William like a physical blow to the stomach, and he felt the color drain from his face as a wave of fear washed over him while his heart hammered against his ribs. He felt deceived and betrayed, thinking back to the conversations he had earlier with the coaching staff where he thought he was

being reassured about his importance to the team.

His mind began to race with dark thoughts, and he imagined himself sitting on the bench for the rest of the deason while this new "star" from Italy took his place in the starting lineup

without a fight. He felt like a fool for believing that he had a real future here.

However, before William could sink too deep into his own despair, Lincoln's voice cut through his thoughts like a sharp blade, demanding that he pay attention to the rest of the message.

"But," the coach added, pausing for a moment to let the word hang in the air while he looked at every player in the vircle,

"there is something every one of you needs to understand about how I run this team and how I choose my players. I will always use the best players available to me on any given day. I don't care about the size of your transfer fee, and I don't care where you came from or how long your contract is because the grass doesn't care about politics."

Lincoln's eyes were fixed on William now, and his voice softened just enough to show that he was speaking directly to the boy's fears.

"If you, William, or any other member of this team performs better in training and shows me the results on the pitch, then you are the one who will be in my starting eleven on match

day. We are not signing Kyle to replace talent; we are signing him to ensure that we have the depth to survive this league.

If you want to keep your spot, you work for it, and if you play better than the man next to you, you will play in the official match. I do not bench players who win games for me, and I do not give away positions for free."

When William heard this, his heart felt cool and calm again, as if a refreshing rain had just put out a raging fire that had been burning in his chest all morning. He realized that the coaches weren't signing Kyle to bench him or push

him out of the way; instead, they were signing Kyle to make him prepare and grow more by giving him the highest level of competition.

The other players in the circle seemed to absorb this information differently, with some of the younger players looking relieved while the veterans like Reed and Bennet looked frustrated by the coach's declaration of merit.

They had hoped that the arrival of a permanent signing would automatically push the "temporary" loanee out of the picture, but Lincoln had just shattered that hope with his

firm words. The power dynamic in the team was shifting, and for the first time since the rumors started, William felt like he had a solid piece of ground to stand on while the politics of the club swirled around him.

Lincoln checked his watch and then looked back at the group, his face hardening

into a mask of pure authority that signaled the end of the discussion. He didn't

want to hear any excuses or see any more side-talk. He wanted to see who would step up

and who would shrink away now that the truth was out in the open, and he was ready to test their spirits to the breaking point.

"I have said all I'm going to say about this matter, and I expect it to be the last time I hear about it," Lincoln commanded, his voice booming across the grass and silencing the last of the murmurs.

"The goal is the Premier League, and we don't get there by acting like children who are afraid of a little competition. I want to see fire in your eyes and professional behavior in your actions, or you can go and find another club to play for."

He turned his head toward the locker rooms and then pointed back toward the white touchline with a sharp, decisive motion.

"Now, all of you, go and wear your full training kits! Get your boots laced and get back out on this pitch for the final session of the afternoon! I want to see the best football you've played

all week, and I want to see it now! Move!"

The players didn't wait for a second command; they immediately broke the circle and began to jog toward the sidelines to gather their gear.

William felt a surge of energy in his legs as he ran, his mind no longer clouded by doubt or worry about what Reed might say behind his back. He knew what he had to do, and he

knew that the coach was watching him with a keen eye to see how he would respond to the news.

As he reached for his kit, he felt a sense of cold determination settle over him, and he was ready to prove that he belonged on the grass more than anyone else. The talking was finished, and as the players prepared to enter

the pitch again, the real battle for the Blackpool midfield was finally about to begin.
