Chapter 57: 57.Forest of No Shade-7
Mylo's legs instinctively dropped, causing him to collapse to the ground.
Just above him, a faint shadow loomed over his head, only to be instantly cut down by Tritia's quick strike.
Mylo hurriedly crawled away from her as a sharp burning sensation flared on his shoulder.
Acid from the Vexfang had dripped onto his skin.
He quickly tried to rub it away with his hand.
"Mylo! Look behind you!"
Mylo was just about to jerk his head around when his shirt was violently grabbed from behind, dragging him backward across the rough terrain.
Through the chaos, he caught a glimpse of Tritia running toward him, but the relentless, violent pulling made it impossible to keep his eyes focused.
Clenching his jaw, he blindly swung his machete backward.
He felt the blade glide along matted fur before giving way to a sickening slicing sensation.
His body was jerked violently once more, sending him tumbling until his head collided hard against a nearby tree.
"...ak!...Cough!.. Cough!"
He groaned, holding his throbbing head in pain, but at the very least, he was free.
Through his teary eyes, Mylo stared into two hollow, empty sockets.
The only reason he could make them out at all was due to the creature's faint, crimson-tinted fur.
The monster's jaw unhinged slightly, and Mylo's face distorted in sheer horror.
The entire inside of its mouth was packed with jagged, overlapping teeth, a maw built to crush stone to dust.
As the creature lowered its head, Mylo spotted two massive beams of antlers protruding from its skull. They branched outward in a dozen distinct directions, their tips glowing with a faint, red light.
"Tritia, don't let it get away! Kill it at any cost!"
Mylo screamed, staggering to his feet as he tried to sprint after it.
''Hmm!''
Tritia lunged forward, her claws slashing through the air.
The twelve-spiked monster sprang off its four hooves and evaded her effortlessly.
It executed a sequence of nimble, leaping bounds through the shadows, vanishing into the pitch-black woods within three seconds.
"No, no! Damn it!" Mylo cursed under his breath.
The reason he had been able to count the twelve distinct points on its antlers in a fraction of a second was simple: he already knew what it was.
That was a twelve-spiked antlered Tkern.
The information about the Tkern flashed through Mylo's mind.
It had four hooves that made it exceptionally agile and fast. It possessed two antlers that divided into twelve sharp spikes, hard enough to rip right through flesh.
But the most dangerous thing Mylo remembered was their hunting habit: they hunted in packs.
If even a single Tkern spotted a target, it would call out to the rest of the pack to launch a coordinated attack.
That was Mylo's biggest worry, and it had now come true.
"Hmm. Mylo, sorry. I wasn't able to capture it," Tritia said. "Are you okay? Tell me."
"Yeah, yeah. I am all right for now."
"Hmm. I am sorry I killed the Vexfang," Tritia added, looking at the dead monster she had slayed earlier.
"No, don't worry. You saved me," Mylo replied.
Stesteadying his breath, Mylo said to her, "We have to run away from here."
"Hmm?"
"It will definitely call its pack," he explained quickly. "We can't hunt them in groups. We won't be able to face them all at once."
"Hmm. Okay. So, where should we run?"
"Uh, let's run in the opposite direction," Mylo said, his mind racing. "Also, put on those boots."
Tritia tried on the leather boots, but they were far too oversized for her small feet. Seeing her struggle, Mylo quickly knelt down to exchange his own shoes with her. Since his shoes were made of a softer material, he was able to tie the laces tightly around her feet, securing them properly. In return, he pulled on the hard boots himself.
With that settled, both of them sprinted into the deep gloom of the forest.
The woods were packed with dense, ink-black bushes that were nearly impossible to distinguish from the surrounding dark. Mylo found himself constantly stumbling, struggling to force his way through the heavy foliage.
Sticky spider webs stretched across the trees at every turn. They clung repeatedly to Mylo's face and got tangled in his hair, making him wildly uncomfortable as he pushed blindly forward through the shadows.
The only thing distinguishing the dark trees from the surrounding pitch-black gloom was the faint red sheen clinging to their bark.
"Woah, woah, woah!" Mylo exclaimed, nearly slamming headfirst into a thick trunk.
They had been running for quite some time now. Leaning against the tree for support, he gasped for air, his chest heaving with every ragged breath.
He glanced over at Tritia. She stood nearby, almost entirely unaffected by the sprint. Even though her frame looked small and delicate, she possessed incredible stamina.
As Mylo knelt on the forest floor to catch his breath, he felt Tritia's hand rest gently on his shoulder.
"I smell those doggies ahead," she whispered, her gaze looking in the dark.
Leaning his back against the tree, Mylo closed his eyes and drew in a deep, unsteady breath as his mind raced.
Pull yourself together. You're not here just to run around like a fool!
He gritted his teeth, forcing his trembling muscles to settle.
You need to survive at least this much. If you can't even face these problems, how are you going to get what you want?
How are you going to protect the people you care about?
How are you going to get your revenge on the bastards who destroyed your life?
Taking a half-dozen steadying breaths, Mylo finally snapped his eyes open.
"We will hunt them," he said.
His grip on the machete tightened until his knuckles popped, a faint red glint shone in his eyes.
Tritia's hand never left his shoulder. She knelt down beside him, her scarlet eyes searching his face.
"Hmm. Why don't you let me handle this?"
"Ha? what are you saying?"
"Hmm. I am saying that I will go and injure them, then you can come to kill them."
"No, no, no, no," Mylo said, shaking his head.
"I heard you, but that's not what we came here to do. We are to hunt them together."
"But you are weak," she insisted, her brows knitting together.
"How are you going to fight? What if you get injured? Or dragged away like before? I was unable to protect! Tell me."
"So what if I get injured? How am I supposed to get stronger if I fear getting injured?"
''Hmm! What would I do if I can't protect you? Are you not scared? You were almost close to losing your life!''
Mylo met her eyes directly, his hand reaching out to settle on her shoulder.
"Listen to me, Tritia. I accept it. I accept that I feel fear, but here's the thing.''
Tritia refused to met his eyes as she looked down.
''Someone once told me that if we want to overcome any fear, we can do it with a bigger fear."
Tritia had a scowl on her face, completely unable to understand him.
"What do you mean? Hmm?"
"No matter how scary things get, there is one thing, one version of myself, that I fear the most," Mylo continued, his eyes looking over her softly.
"It's the version of me that doesn't take action. The version of me that stops living his life because he is scared. And I will never become that version."
He removed his hand from her shoulder and stood up.
"You can forget about my earlier request of leaving them alive for me to finish," he said, looking ahead into the dark woods, finally stepping into it.
"We will both hunt them and kill them together. If you ever feel that the danger is too much, then you are free to go back. I won't hold anything against you."
"No!" Tritia protested, stepping after him.
"But didn't you order me earlier to leave them alive so you could kill them? Didn't you want me to help you complete your goal so you could escape this forest? Wasn't that your order?"
Stopping in his tracks at her sudden outburst, Mylo turned his head slightly.
"Tritia, I never gave you an order, and I never will," Mylo said softly.
"I asked for your help, and you are free to decide."
"No, no... but that's not how it's supposed to work!"
"This is how we will work."
Turning his back on her, Mylo started walking toward the scent of the Vexfangs.
Behind him, Tritia stood frozen, looking down at her nails. Her claws were still coated in dark, sticky black blood. She clenched her fist tightly, her knuckles turning pale.
...But if we act like this, then you can never be...
Exhaling a quiet breath, she muttered under her breath, "No, I can't give up right now. I know I can change it..."
Her soft voice remained strictly to herself as she stepped forward, quietly following close behind Mylo through the shadowy trees.
