The Extra who regained his past life memories

Chapter 4 – A Promise to Protect

A few minutes later, another knock came from the door.

"Come in."

The door opened, and two women entered.

One of them carried an aura of quiet authority that seemed to fill the entire room.

My mother.

Beside her stood a woman with chestnut-brown hair and gentle emerald eyes. Unlike Mother’s overwhelming presence, she carried a calm and soothing atmosphere that naturally put people at ease.

The Starlight Family’s physician.

Evelyn.

Mother’s usually indifferent expression softened slightly when she saw Amy and me eating together.

A faint smile appeared on her lips before disappearing just as quickly.

She turned toward Evelyn.

"Please examine him."

"Of course."

Evelyn smiled warmly before walking toward my bedside.

"Hello, Gray."

"It’s been a while."

"Do you remember me?"

I smiled and nodded.

"I do."

She laughed softly.

"You used to cry every time I gave you medicine."

Amy immediately burst into laughter.

"See? I told you!"

I coughed awkwardly.

"I was seven."

"That doesn’t count."

Amy giggled.

"It absolutely counts."

Shaking her head with a smile, Evelyn began her examination.

She checked my pulse, my eyes, and my breathing before placing a gentle hand on my forehead.

A warm stream of mana flowed through my body, carefully inspecting every part of me.

The sensation was strangely comforting.

"How are you feeling?" she asked.

"My head still hurts a little."

"And some of my memories feel... fuzzy."

She nodded thoughtfully.

"That’s perfectly normal."

"When you collapsed, you hit your head."

"Fortunately, there are no serious injuries."

"The dizziness should disappear within a few days."

She withdrew her hand and smiled reassuringly.

"Aside from that..."

"You’re perfectly healthy."

The tension in the room immediately disappeared.

Amy released the breath she had unknowingly been holding.

Even Mother’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

It only lasted for a moment...

But I noticed it.

She had truly been worried.

"I’m glad," Mother said quietly.

Evelyn packed away her medical tools.

"Just make sure he gets enough rest for the next few days."

"No training."

"No exhausting yourself."

"And absolutely no staying up late reading books."

Amy immediately pointed at me.

"I told you!"

I looked away innocently.

"...I only did that once."

"Three times," Amy corrected.

I blinked.

"...You counted?"

She folded her arms proudly.

"I always count."

Even Mother couldn’t hide the faint smile that appeared on her face.

Watching the two of them made me smile as well.

This family...

It felt warm.

Warmer than any memory from my previous life.

After speaking with Mother for another minute, Evelyn bowed politely.

"Then I’ll take my leave."

"Please call me immediately if anything changes."

Mother nodded.

"Thank you, Evelyn."

With that, Evelyn quietly left the room.

Silence settled over the room once again.

Almost immediately, Amy walked over with a bright smile.

"Gray."

She clasped her hands behind her back.

"Let’s go shopping."

I blinked.

"...Shopping?"

She nodded enthusiastically.

"You promised me before you collapsed."

"You were going to accompany me."

She paused for a moment before grinning mischievously.

"And become my personal clothes hanger."

"...I mean..."

"My wonderful little brother."

A chill ran down my spine.

I could already imagine myself standing there while Amy happily piled mountains of clothes into my arms.

I coughed awkwardly.

"I... don’t remember making that promise."

I looked at her hopefully.

"So it doesn’t count... right?"

Without waiting for her answer, I slowly pulled the blanket over myself.

"Oh!"

"I just remembered something very important."

"I should probably go do that instead."

Amy’s smile only widened.

"Oh no, you don’t."

She grabbed the blanket before I could hide underneath it.

"Gray."

"You promised."

"And a Starlight never breaks their word."

I looked at her pitifully.

"But I can’t even remember making that promise."

"That sounds like a ’you’ problem."

She replied without hesitation.

I stared at her in disbelief.

"That’s unfair."

She smiled proudly.

"I know."

From the corner of the room, Mother quietly watched our exchange.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

"Amy."

She spoke softly.

"Stop teasing your brother."

Amy reluctantly released the blanket.

Mother then turned toward me.

"Gray."

"Rest for another two hours before you leave."

"You’ve only just regained consciousness."

Her expression softened.

"And..."

"I’m sorry."

"I’ve been busy with family affairs lately."

"I haven’t been able to spend much time with either of you."

Amy and I both looked at her.

Mother rarely apologized.

Seeing that lonely smile on her face made my heart tighten.

Amy immediately hugged one of Mother’s arms.

"It’s okay, Mom."

"We know you’re busy."

"You work hard for us every day."

I nodded.

"Exactly."

"Don’t worry about us."

"We’ll have plenty of chances to spend time together."

Mother looked at the two of us quietly before gently patting our heads.

"...Thank you."

Amy suddenly smiled brightly.

"Then it’s settled!"

"I’ll borrow Gray for the afternoon!"

"I haven’t had a proper shopping trip with my little brother in ages."

Mother let out a quiet chuckle.

"Very well."

"But don’t tire him out."

Amy gave an exaggerated salute.

"Yes, ma’am!"

She turned toward me with sparkling eyes.

"So..."

"Two hours."

"Then we’re leaving."

I sighed dramatically.

"...Fine."

"I’ll get ready."

Amy pumped her fist into the air.

"Victory!"

Mother simply smiled before turning toward the door.

"I’ll return to work."

"Take care of yourselves."

I smiled warmly.

"Don’t overwork yourself either, Mom."

She paused for a brief moment.

Then she looked back at me with a gentle smile that only her family ever saw.

"I won’t."

With those words, she quietly left the room.

I watched the door for a moment before turning toward Amy.

"How about I get ready in about an hour and a half?" I asked.

Then I looked at her with a meaningful smile.

Amy raised an eyebrow.

"...Why are you looking at me like that?"

The smile on my face widened.

"Well..."

"I figured if I only take an hour and a half, we’ll still leave at the same time."

She blinked in confusion.

"What do you mean?"

I shrugged innocently.

"Isn’t it obvious?"

"You’ll probably still be getting ready."

"I’ve seen how long it takes you."

"At this rate, you’ll spend the whole day choosing clothes."

"So I thought I should give you some extra time."

For a moment, Amy simply stared at me in disbelief.

Then—

Thump.

She lightly knocked me on the head.

"Ouch!"

"What was that for?"

She folded her arms and narrowed her ruby-red eyes.

"What did you just say, you little brat?"

"Go on."

"Say it again."

"I dare you."

I rubbed my head dramatically.

"I was only speaking the truth."

"You know, honesty is supposed to be a virtue."

Amy’s eye twitched.

"Oh?"

"So now you’re calling your sister slow?"

I immediately shook my head.

"No, no."

"I’m saying you’re..."

"Very thorough."

"You take your time because you want to look perfect."

She stared at me for another second before snorting.

"Hmph."

"At least I don’t walk around looking like I just rolled out of bed."

She reached over and ruffled my messy hair.

"Honestly, Gray."

"You’d be hopeless without me."

I sighed dramatically.

"See?"

"This is exactly why I said we should leave later."

Amy couldn’t hold it in anymore.

She burst into laughter.

"You’re impossible."

"But..."

She smiled warmly.

"I like this version of my little brother much better."
