Chapter 138: It’s Normal For Me to Be Unhappy
The base of Caroline Whitman’s ear tingled where he was pinching it. She tried to pull away, but couldn’t.
She had no choice but to turn her head and try to intimidate him with a glare. "You have the nerve to ask?"
Adrian Grant took in her vivid expression. Before, when they had lived under the same roof, they had both worn masks and treated each other with polite distance.
This was one of the few times she had shown him such a playfully angry look.
’Cute.’
"How am I supposed to change if you don’t tell me what I did wrong?" Adrian’s expression didn’t shift.
Seeing that he genuinely looked like he had no idea what he’d done that was so weird, Caroline had to force the words out through her embarrassment.
"During dinner, why did you secretly switch our wine glasses?"
The thought that the other business partners might have noticed made her cringe so hard her toes curled.
She had thought Adrian’s ruthlessness and weirdness were confined to the business world. No matter how weird he was, there had to be a limit.
But they had only been together for a few days, and she was already getting a taste of his strange habits.
Caroline’s scalp tingled with unease.
’If I ever try to break up with him, he wouldn’t lock me in a dark room, would he?’
At that thought, Caroline wailed silently.
’This is the price you pay for falling for a handsome face.’
’The worst part is, I haven’t even gotten a taste of the goods yet.’
Adrian watched the shifting expressions on her face and keenly caught the flicker of fear in her eyes.
’Fear?’
’That’s not a good sign.’
He smiled faintly.
"Just switching glasses, and that’s already weird? Are you afraid?"
Caroline’s eyes widened like saucers. It was obvious their brains were wired completely differently on this matter. Alarm bells went off in her head.
"Of course I’m afraid! So what? What other dirty tricks do you have up your sleeve?"
Seeing how nervous she was, Adrian said with an amused laugh:
"I thought it was a bit of fun between us. Since you don’t like it, I won’t do it again."
’Fun?’
Caroline was a straightforward person.
She had never experienced anything so thrilling.
She only remembered her heart pounding at the time. Recalling the scene now, a blush slowly crept up her cheeks.
In the end, Caroline wasn’t as thick-skinned as he was. She grabbed a pillow and threw it at him.
"I really don’t like it. Don’t do that again."
"Alright." Adrian moved the pillow from his lap, agreeing readily.
Tonight, Adrian was well-behaved.
He just held her quietly as they slept.
He didn’t try anything.
It was as if he was deliberately putting on an ascetic act to clear his "perverted" name.
Every time Adrian acted pure and harmless, Caroline would wonder if she was overreacting.
With him being so quiet, she actually felt a little unaccustomed to it.
Realizing this, Caroline was startled.
’Isn’t this like being a frog in slowly boiling water? He’s dragging me down with him, trying to make me just like him!’
Caroline immediately scrambled out of that trap of self-reflection.
She suddenly remembered there was a pending friend request on her WhatsApp.
Caroline sat up in bed.
She picked up her phone and accepted the request.
Staring at the blank chat screen, Caroline thought for a moment. Just as she was about to ask why the person had added her...
Adrian’s voice suddenly sounded right by her ear:
"Who are you talking to?"
Caroline jumped. She turned her head. "How can you get up so quietly?"
Adrian looked innocent.
He had wanted to ask her the same thing.
She had been sleeping soundly and then suddenly sat up to look at her phone. He didn’t want to overthink the situation.
As they were talking, Caroline’s phone buzzed. A message from Luna Lynn had already come through.
Luna Lynn: [Hello, this is Luna Lynn. I’m sorry to bother you so late.]
Caroline looked down at it but didn’t reply, waiting for her to get to the point.
"Who’s that?" Adrian’s gaze was still fixed on her phone screen.
"Luna Lynn," Caroline said, then paused before adding, "Last time we were in Marinus, we overheard a conversation between Luna Lynn and Vincent Fuller. Remember?"
Adrian grunted in acknowledgment. "What does she want with you?"
Caroline was curious about that herself.
’The original female lead of the book suddenly contacting her had really taken her by surprise.’
She and Luna Lynn had moved in different circles at St. Hector’s High School, and in college, they had no way of contacting each other at all.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have gone this long without being connected.
Luna Lynn quickly got to the point: [The St. Hector’s High School alumni mixer is the day after tomorrow. Are you going?]
Caroline: [...You added me just for this? If you’re asking whether I’m going, then sorry, but the answer is no.]
Just as her curiosity was satisfied and she was about to unfriend the person, another message from Luna Lynn arrived.
Luna Lynn: [That’s a shame. I was hoping to talk to you about a potential collaboration.]
Caroline was stunned, her fingers flying as she typed a series of question marks: [Collaboration? With you? What kind? Didn’t you quit the entertainment industry?]
Luna Lynn: [I did, but I’m starting a company now. Could we meet up and talk about the details?]
Caroline was extremely curious.
’Know your enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.’ This was exactly why she had accepted Luna Lynn’s friend request; she had to find out what the other woman’s intentions were.
She just hadn’t expected things to go in this direction. It was completely unexpected.
’She actually wants to collaborate with me?’
’How did Luna Lynn end up starting her own business?’
’Is she still with Vincent Fuller?’
Caroline had so many questions.
Adrian spoke up. "Do you need me to look into this Luna Lynn for you?"
He had seen their chat history. This Luna Lynn was also from St. Hector’s High School.
When she had introduced herself, he had even suspected she was someone sent by Ethan Xavier as a cover.
Of course, that wasn’t entirely out of the question.
Caroline first gave her a vague reply: [Alright, we can talk about it some other time when we’re free.]
Then she put down her phone and said to Adrian, "Yes, yes, please help me look into Luna Lynn’s situation."
Adrian was incredibly well-connected; the information he could dig up would surely be more comprehensive than anything she could find on her own.
Naturally, Caroline wouldn’t refuse his help.
After a pause, thinking about the business rivalry between their families, she asked again, "By the way, has Vincent Fuller taken over the Fuller Group yet?"
She hadn’t heard any news about Vincent Fuller recently.
But he was still around Kingsport, and he seemed as spirited as ever.
"Vincent Fuller?" Adrian raised an eyebrow, surprised that Caroline would suddenly bring up another man in front of him.
He studied her face carefully. Seeing no unusual expression, he finally said, "A while ago, there were rumors that Vincent Fuller was kicked out of the Fuller Group. He’s probably starting his own business now."
Caroline was shocked!
"Huh? How did he get kicked out?"
"You seem very concerned about him."
Caroline detected an odd note in his tone. ’This guy can’t be jealous, can he?’
She explained helplessly, "I remember those two are a couple, right? And with Luna Lynn suddenly contacting me, I just connected the dots."
After speaking, she shot him a cool glance. "You can’t possibly be jealous over something like this, can you?"
Adrian, however, didn’t deny it. He stated frankly, "You’re asking about another young man in front of me. It’s perfectly normal for me to be unhappy about it."
"..."
"Well, you’re worrying for nothing. I’m not interested in him," Caroline reassured him.
