Chapter 131: This Is What It Means to Be Close
...
Whenever Adrian Grant put on a serious act, Caroline Whitman would always reflect on herself, wondering if she was thinking the worst of him.
But as it turned out...
She was right.
In the dead of night.
Caroline Whitman was completely exhausted. She gave the man who had just emerged from the bathroom and was standing by the bed a little kick. "No more ’massages’ next time," she huffed.
The man really was just pretending to be proper.
He had so many tricks up his sleeve before they’d even gone all the way; she didn’t dare to imagine what life would be like after they ’unlocked’ that achievement.
Adrian Grant took the opportunity to grasp her ankle, a faint smile on his face. "Didn’t you enjoy it, Caroline?"
Images of the recent heart-pounding, blush-inducing moments flashed through Caroline Whitman’s mind. The flush on her face hadn’t yet faded, and now a new wave of shyness washed over her as she chided him in a small voice,
"You’re not allowed to talk about it."
The corners of Adrian Grant’s mouth curved up slightly, and he tactfully stopped teasing her.
He turned off the light, got into bed, and pulled her into his arms before drifting off to sleep.
They had overdone it last night.
As a result, the alarm clock rang several times before either of them stirred to turn it off.
It was Ryan Grant who finally pushed the door open, climbed onto the bed with his short little legs, and shook them both awake.
It was already eight in the morning.
For the first time, Caroline Whitman felt the urge to use her position to give herself a day off.
As she was getting out of bed, Adrian Grant woke up too.
"Mommy, Daddy, you guys woke up so late today. Did you not sleep well last night?"
the little one asked innocently.
While Caroline Whitman was still trying to figure out how to answer, Adrian Grant had already gotten out of bed and was replying with a perfectly straight face,
"Yes, Mommy and I were discussing important work matters last night."
Caroline Whitman: "..."
She had no choice but to change the subject. "Sweetheart, have you washed your face and brushed your teeth?"
Ryan Grant’s gaze shifted from his father to Caroline Whitman. "I’ve been up for a while! Mommy, look, I’m already dressed."
He stood up on the bed to show off his handiwork.
Caroline Whitman praised him, "That’s great!"
"By the way, where is he going later...?"
He had been staying with Jonathan Grant for the past few days, and she wasn’t sure what arrangements they had made for Ryan.
Adrian Grant explained, "Grandpa enrolled him in a preschool program. He’ll go to school during the day, and I’ll bring him back at night."
Hearing this, Caroline Whitman had no objections.
At his age, it was about time for him to start preschool anyway.
It was certainly a good thing that someone could handle the foundation of his education.
Considering Adrian Grant had grown up so sound in mind and body within the Grant family, she naturally wouldn’t interfere too much when it came to their child’s education.
It seemed they wouldn’t be able to have breakfast with their son at home this morning.
They would have to take him to the old family residence and have Miss King make him a separate breakfast.
The two of them left for work separately.
Before getting into Adrian Grant’s car, Ryan Grant didn’t forget to wave to Caroline Whitman.
"Bye-bye, Mommy."
"Mhm, see you tonight."
"Mommy, I want a kiss."
The little guy pointed to his cheek, asking his mom for a goodbye kiss.
After Caroline Whitman obliged, the little one kissed her cheek in return.
Unexpectedly, a deep voice came from above her.
"What about mine?"
Ryan Grant thought his dad was upset because he hadn’t kissed him, so he quickly turned, cupped his father’s face, and planted a big SMOOCH on his cheek.
"There."
Ryan Grant clapped his chubby little hands, only to find that his dad’s eyes weren’t on him at all.
He followed Adrian Grant’s gaze, which slowly moved until it landed on Caroline Whitman.
His little head tilted from side to side in confusion, his eyes darting back and forth between their faces.
Caroline Whitman had the same reaction as Ryan Grant.
She had also thought Adrian Grant was talking to their son, but his gaze was fixed on her.
’What does he mean?’
’Is he asking for a kiss?’
Ryan Grant, however, had already figured out the truth. He giggled and announced, "Mommy, Daddy wants you to kiss him."
Without being coy, Caroline Whitman leaned in and gave Adrian Grant a peck on the cheek.
But he didn’t seem satisfied. He covered the child’s eyes with one large hand, bent down, and his lips met Caroline’s.
It was a brief touch, and then he pulled away.
"Now that’s a real kiss," Adrian Grant said leisurely.
Caroline Whitman: "..."
If their son wasn’t right there, she would have definitely given him a piece of her mind.
’You big tease!’
’Who makes out in a parking lot?’
Caroline Whitman turned her head and glanced at the people trickling down from the building and into the parking lot.
She tapped him lightly with her hand and whispered, "Okay, stop. Don’t let people laugh at us."
It was rush hour for work, and people were constantly passing by. It was terribly embarrassing to be seen like this.
She didn’t have a penchant for public displays of affection with her boyfriend in front of strangers.
Adrian Grant wanted to say, ’What’s so funny about this for people to laugh at?’
But she just threw that sentence at him, turned around, and got into her own car, leaving him with a view of her back.
Ryan Grant seemed to hear his mother leaving and finally pulled away the hand that had been covering his eyes.
"Where’s Mommy?"
"She went to work."
Adrian Grant got into the car with his son.
Ryan Grant reluctantly pulled his gaze away. After the driver started the car, he looked up at the father sitting beside him.
His eyes darted around for a moment. The little guy blinked, tilted his head back, and called out, "Daddy."
"Hmm?"
Adrian Grant turned his head to look at him and saw the little tyke had something he wanted to say.
"What do you want to say?" he asked.
"You and Mommy are getting along better lately, right?" Ryan Grant asked.
Adrian Grant raised an eyebrow slightly. "What makes you say that?"
"I can just feel that things are better. A few months ago, you would never have asked Mommy for a kiss."
Ryan Grant explained his reasoning.
After all, he had seen Adrian Grant’s cold and faintly distant demeanor before.
If it weren’t for the same face, the same voice, and the same grandparents, he would have suspected this man wasn’t even his father.
"Yes, things are better," Adrian Grant replied gently.
Ryan Grant pouted. "Hmph, I knew it. You two really were fighting back then."
’I knew it.’
His dad used to love giving kisses so much; how could he possibly go several months without kissing Mommy?
"But Mommy and I weren’t fighting. Don’t misunderstand. We were just respecting each other back then."
Adrian Grant felt he had to clear up the issue of them fighting.
He didn’t think it was good for his son to hold onto that misunderstanding.
"Respect?"
"Mhm. You can think of it as... Mommy and I had just met."
"But you and Mommy have known each other for a long time," Ryan Grant said, tilting his head, unable to wrap his mind around it.
"You’re still little. You’ll understand when you’re older."
"..."
’I might as well just ask my teacher later. That’d be faster.’
But Adrian Grant’s patient voice sounded from above his head.
"Mommy and I are getting to know each other again."
’In a way, it really was like getting to know each other again.’
After all, when they were in college, that was the first time they had met.
It was just that neither of them really knew the other.
They only knew a student ID number and a name.
Ryan Grant looked up at him again, seeming to have successfully understood. "Oh, I get it. So you and Mommy were pretending you didn’t know each other well?"
A smile touched Adrian Grant’s lips as he ruffled his son’s hair with a large hand. "You could say that."
