Chapter 123: Who Will Crack First? Who Knows
Just as Ryan Grant hung up the video call, Zoe Grant happened to push the door open and come in:
"Tiny, you’re secretly playing on your phone again instead of sleeping?"
As he passed the gaudy door, which was covered in large cartoon stickers, he’d planned to peek in and see what the little brat was doing, hiding in his room right after his bath.
But the moment he walked in, he saw him holding a phone.
’The internet is such a corrupting influence. A kid this young is already addicted to his phone.’
Zoe Grant walked over to his side and snatched the phone away. "Kids aren’t allowed to play with phones."
Ryan Grant obediently turned his head and explained, "I wasn’t playing on my phone. I was video chatting with Mom and Dad."
"Oh, reporting in again?" Zoe laughed.
Ryan Grant blinked his eyes. "What does ’reporting in’ mean?"
"Sometimes I think you’re so smart, but then you don’t know the meaning of every word. Other times I think you’re silly, but you’re cleverer than anyone." Zoe affectionately ruffled his hair.
Ryan Grant shook his hand away and scrambled to the corner of the bed. "Don’t touch my head! It’ll stunt my growth."
"Alright, alright, I won’t touch it. Come here, your uncle has something to tell you."
Hearing this, Ryan Grant decisively lay down and pulled his little blanket over himself. "I’m going to sleep now, Uncle. It’s not good for kids to stay up late. It’ll stunt my growth."
"..."
Those words sounded very familiar. It seemed to be something he himself had casually said to the boy over the past few days—that he should go to bed early, or staying up late would stunt his growth.
’Heh, and now the little guy is using my own words against me.’
"Your uncle just wants to ask you one thing. Just one," Zoe said, putting on a pitiful expression.
The little guy sighed. "I really don’t know what Auntie’s name is. Mom and Dad never told me."
You never brought Auntie home, so Uncle, even if you showed me a picture, I wouldn’t know which one is your wife."
"...."
Zoe Grant wondered, ’Why wouldn’t I bring my wife home in the future?’
’Is it because I don’t like her?’
At that thought, Zoe immediately shook his head, trying to cast aside the terrible question.
Then Zoe remembered another key question he hadn’t asked. "Am I married?"
Ryan Grant shook his head. "No."
’What the hell!’
’In a few years, his brother’s kid will be old enough to run errands, and he’s still not married?’
’A failure. What a total failure.’
No wonder this kid knew nothing about his affairs.
As Zoe Grant left, he said, "I’m confiscating your phone. When you want to call your parents, come get it from me. Rest well, and no more playing."
Ryan Grant just said, "Oh." He didn’t really like playing on the phone anyway. He only used it at night to video chat with his parents, since it was hard to see their faces on his little watch.
...
After dinner ended and the fireworks faded, Caroline Whitman and Adrian Grant returned home as well.
When she came out of the bathroom after showering and drying her hair, Adrian was already sitting on the bed in his pajamas.
"..."
Sitting on the bed was one thing, but his aggressive gaze, completely undisguised, was fixed on her.
Caroline had never felt that the few steps from the bathroom to the bedside could be so difficult.
She wasn’t as thick-skinned as he was, after all. When she reached the side of the bed and saw his burning gaze still locked on her, she couldn’t help but grab a pillow and toss it at him.
"Stop staring."
Adrian was thoroughly amused. "The pajamas you wore at your place yesterday were cuter. Why aren’t you wearing them?"
"..."
Previously, when she and Adrian were in the same room, they didn’t make much eye contact.
At most, they were just nodding acquaintances.
Honestly, Caroline had been quite shocked last night when she heard Adrian confess his feelings.
So, comparing their previous dynamic to the Adrian before her now, all she could say was:
"I never realized you were such a closet perv."
What Caroline thought in her heart, she said right out loud.
Adrian smiled and casually took off his glasses, showing no sign of anger. Instead, he graciously accepted it. "Mm, a very accurate assessment."
"..."
"I also didn’t realize you were so shameless," Caroline added with another leisurely jab. She lifted the covers, got into bed, turned off the light, and lay down.
Before today, her image of Adrian—her "filter" for him—had been that of, if not a reserved and ascetic scholar, then at least an upright gentleman.
This was only the second night since they’d made their relationship official, and that filter was already starting to crack.
’Hmph. Men.’
She had just laid down when the man beside her reached out and gently pulled her into his arms.
Adrian buried his face in the crook of her neck. His warm breath brushed against her skin, and his large hand slowly caressed her back. A low chuckle drifted into her ear:
"Mm, any other assessments?"
"..."
Her earlobe felt a little itchy, a little wet. Caroline had never experienced such an intimate act before. The tickling made her subconsciously push him away. "That tickles."
The lingering kiss dissolved, moving from her earlobe to her cheek, then to her lips, down to her neck, and finally melting onto her collarbone.
Caroline’s whole body went soft. It was a sensation she had never experienced before.
Suddenly, she remembered something.
’If he can kiss me so brazenly now, doesn’t that mean I can openly touch his abs?’
At this thought, her small hand began to naturally explore its way onto his chest.
Smooth skin, a firm but not unyielding texture.
’So a "hard chest" is a realistic description after all.’
’Thank goodness the lights are off.’
She really didn’t dare to imagine if she would get another nosebleed if the lights were on.
Sliding her hand lower, she entered another uncharted territory.
During her exploration, Adrian stopped moving.
He seemed to be waiting to see how far this little kitten would go.
But he waited for a full few minutes, and she still hadn’t finished.
In the darkness, Adrian let out a soft chuckle and caught her hand. "Why don’t you dare to go lower?"
His words made Caroline jump as if she’d been struck by Victor Rhodes.
She said sheepishly, "I’m not a pervert."
"Then I am."
"..."
Caroline’s mind went blank. Feeling the unfamiliar texture in her hand, her face flushed crimson, and she became tongue-tied once again.
"Did, did you prepare... that thing?"
Adrian paused. "No."
His words made her panic. "What? No, that won’t work! Ryan can’t show up yet."
Adrian chuckled softly and patted her back. "No rush."
"..."
’The way he said that makes it sound like I was the one who couldn’t wait.’
Feeling his obvious reaction, Caroline bit her lip. ’Hmph. If he’s not in a rush, then I’m not in a rush.’
’Besides, male and female anatomy are different.’
’We’ll see who suffers more from holding back.’
—
In fact, that night, without a "kid-stopper," the two virtuously refrained from crossing the final line.
It’s just that "manual shifting" required some effort and was quite tiring.
She didn’t know what time she fell asleep last night. Caroline only knew that when she groggily woke up, it was already ten-thirty in the morning.
She subconsciously felt the space beside her, then opened her eyes to see it was empty.
Caroline dawdled a bit before getting up to wash. After leaving the room and entering the living room, she saw Adrian sitting primly on the sofa, reading a newspaper.
’He really doesn’t have work today.’
’Look how bored he is, he’s even resorted to reading a newspaper.’
’Speaking of which, where did a newspaper even come from in this house?’
Hearing the sound, Adrian looked up and smiled gently.
"You’re awake? Breakfast is on the table."
