Chapter 115: This Is My Girlfriend
The call was from Jane Lawson.
’That was a little unexpected.’
’A week had passed. Autumn Lawson should have been discharged by now.’
’Why would she call so suddenly? Did something happen?’
Caroline Whitman shifted off Adrian Grant and called the number back. The call connected almost immediately.
"Caroline, I’m so sorry to bother you this late," Jane Lawson’s voice came from the other end of the line.
Caroline asked, "What’s wrong?"
"My sister started a fight with the patient named Carson in the room next door. I thought you might know the people in that room, Caroline, so I was hoping you could come over and help me talk some sense into her."
"Huh? She’s fighting with Zane Carson?" Caroline was stunned.
She tried to slide off Adrian Grant’s lap, but he held her fast by the waist, wrapping his arms around her. Caroline had no choice but to stop struggling, though she was in no mood to deal with him.
She had to continue the conversation. "How did they even start fighting?"
"I don’t know either. I just got to the hospital from my part-time job at the restaurant and they were already at each other’s throats."
"..."
Caroline glanced at Adrian. "Okay, I’ll go check it out."
Since Adrian was holding her so close, he’d naturally overheard the phone call.
He asked lazily, "What’s wrong? Is that friend of yours calling you to handle her business again?"
"Yeah. I’m not sure how, but my classmate started fighting with Zane Carson."
"Zane Carson?" Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"I’ll go with you," he said.
"Oh."
As Caroline got off his lap and went to the walk-in closet to change, Adrian’s phone rang.
At the sound, Caroline silently glanced at his phone screen.
Gene Carson.
"What trouble did Zane get into now?" Adrian asked in a low voice the moment he answered.
There was a moment of hesitation on the other end of the line. Gene Carson hadn’t expected Adrian to guess why she was calling.
She could only say meekly, "My brother is fighting with the patient next door. Nothing anyone says is working. Adrian, could you please come over?"
"I’ll be there soon."
Shortly after he hung up, Caroline came out of the walk-in closet in a fresh set of clothes.
Adrian stood up. "Gene just told me about Zane’s situation, too. Perfect timing. We can go check it out together."
Caroline nodded without saying much and followed him downstairs. They drove to the hospital.
After they got out of the car, Adrian waited for her to walk a little ahead before naturally stepping forward and taking her hand.
Caroline looked down at their clasped hands and deadpanned, "Is this really necessary?"
But Adrian was perfectly nonchalant. "I want to hold my girlfriend’s hand. Is there a problem with that?"
"..."
Caroline gave him a long, hard look.
’She knew people had many sides, but she never expected Adrian to be like this after they started dating.’
’Was this the kind of clinginess the kids were talking about?’
"This is a hospital. We’re here to visit patients, not to..." Caroline paused, then whispered, "...flaunt our relationship."
But Adrian had his own logic. "I believe that simply holding hands will not affect the patients’ conditions."
"..."
Unable to win the argument, Caroline could only let him lead her by the hand all the way up to the ward.
Hospitals are supposed to be quiet.
But Autumn Lawson and Zane Carson were raising a ruckus in their room.
When Caroline and Adrian arrived on the correct floor, they found Gene Carson and Jane Lawson stuck out in the hallway.
"Your sister must have done something to my brother in the past! My brother has never torn into someone like this before!"
"Hmph! My sister would never do anything to your brother. She’s such a gentle, kind person."
"Your sister is not nice!"
"Your brother is not nice!"
Watching the two of them bickering like children, Caroline spoke up. "What’s going on here?"
"What exactly happened?" Adrian’s voice followed right after.
They both turned their heads at the same time.
Jane Lawson’s face lit up as if she’d seen a savior. "Caroline, you’re finally here!"
Gene Carson’s face also lit up with joy when she heard Adrian’s voice. Her eyes quickly scanned the newcomers, but when they landed on his and Caroline’s clasped hands, her smile froze for an instant before she quickly composed herself.
She put on a polite smile. "Adrian, you’re finally here."
Caroline turned to Jane. "Where are they?"
"They’re inside. They won’t let us in."
"..."
"..."
Adrian asked, "Didn’t you call for a nurse?"
"A nurse came by, but they acted normal. Then a moment ago, they started fighting again and kicked us out. They said if we disturb them again, there’s no telling what they might do," Gene Carson said, worried.
Hearing this, Caroline let go of Adrian’s hand. She walked to the door, but instead of pushing it open, she decided to knock first.
"Autumn Lawson? It’s Caroline Whitman. Are you two okay? I’m coming in now."
Adrian’s now-empty hand twitched slightly before he followed her into the room.
After a few seconds of silence, Caroline pushed the door open and went inside.
She saw Autumn Lawson in a hospital gown, her head wrapped in gauze and her leg in a cast. At that moment, she was leaning over a bed, her hands around the throat of the man lying there, snapping at him.
"You’re shameless!"
"How am I shameless? You’re the shameless one!"
Caroline: "..."
’Is this really a huge fight, and not just... flirting?’
After they traded one more insult, Autumn Lawson finally noticed the people who had entered and looked over in surprise.
Besides the somewhat familiar Caroline Whitman and Jane Lawson, there was also an unfamiliar man and woman behind them.
"Caroline?"
Autumn Lawson struggled to her feet, and Jane quickly rushed over to support her sister.
’She couldn’t believe that her sister, as injured as she was, could still manage to pin someone to a bed.’
"Sis, be careful! Your leg hasn’t healed yet. Don’t fall and make it worse. We don’t have the money for more medical bills as it is."
Autumn Lawson: "..."
Zane Carson’s injuries weren’t as severe as Autumn Lawson’s. He only had a mild concussion, and his right arm was in a splint.
He sat up in bed and turned to the visitors. "Why are you all here?"
But then he saw Adrian and understood. He turned to Gene. "You called him here?"
Gene knew what he was getting at. But this time, Adrian’s arrival had shattered her fantasies, so she nodded glumly. "I was worried about you. You wouldn’t listen to me, so I had to call Adrian."
Zane shot her a look, deciding to give her a little push. "Oh, please. Why didn’t you call Finn and Milo to come along too?"
Gene’s eyes flickered. Her gaze darted to Caroline for a second before looking away. "They were all busy," she said finally. "I could only call Adrian."
Just then, Adrian suddenly spoke up. "Well, it just so happens I was accompanying my girlfriend here to see what was going on."
Zane sucked in a sharp breath. "Girlfriend?"
’Holy crap, this is huge news!’
’Adrian Grant, the bachelor of the millennium, is actually going public with a girlfriend?’
"Who? Who is it?" Zane asked excitedly.
The next second, Adrian took the initiative and grabbed Caroline’s hand. "Let me formally introduce you. This is my girlfriend, Caroline Whitman."
Zane stared at Caroline in shock. "It’s you?!"
He’d only met Caroline twice before. He never would have imagined that on their third meeting, she’d be Adrian’s girlfriend.
He glanced at his little sister and thought, ’Well, so much for that. Looks like she’s got no chance.’
Caroline smiled. "Hello."
After a pause, she turned to Autumn Lawson, changing the subject. "I heard from Jane that you two suddenly started fighting. What happened?"
"Autumn, you know Zane Carson?"
