Yes, I Have a Child with the Villain

Chapter 98: Right Now, I Can Only Think of You

Sobbing came from the other end of the line.

Caroline Whitman froze. She checked the caller ID again. "Jane Lawson? What’s wrong?"

Jane Lawson was Autumn Lawson’s younger brother.

And Autumn Lawson had been one of Caroline’s college classmates during their sophomore year.

She and Autumn had really clicked, so Autumn was one of the few close friends she had made at school.

But during their sophomore year, Autumn suddenly dropped out without a word. Caroline had tried to contact her to ask why, but she never heard back.

Until today, when Autumn’s brother suddenly called her, leaving her stunned.

She had only met Jane twice, back in the second semester of her freshman year. He had just been a little kid in his first year of middle school, and she’d treated him to McDonald’s and KFC a couple of times.

"What happened? Where’s Autumn?"

"My sister... she was just in a car accident. Caroline, can I borrow some money?"

Caroline frowned. As far as she knew, Autumn’s family was quite well-off. For Jane to be personally contacting her to borrow money now... ’Could it be that Autumn dropped out because her family had fallen on hard times?’

So she said, "What hospital are you at? Tell me the location."

「A little over ten minutes later.」

Caroline rushed to the hospital.

As she was getting into the elevator, she happened to run into Adrian Grant. Both of them froze for a second.

Adrian watched Caroline step into the elevator and asked in surprise, "Are you sick?"

"I’m not sick," Caroline said. "A classmate of mine was in a car accident, so I came to check on them."

Adrian glanced at the elevator buttons. The button for the 8th floor was lit. It was just the two of them in the elevator.

After Caroline came in, she just glanced at the button panel without pressing anything, so he asked, "Is your classmate named Zane Carson, too?"

"...Of course not."

Thanks to gossip from Lily Young, Caroline had a good idea why Adrian was at the hospital.

She asked, just to be sure, "Zane Carson was in a car accident?"

"Yeah."

When she reached the floor Jane had told her, she saw a young man with a backpack sitting dejectedly in the hallway.

Not far from him sat a girl, anxiously glancing toward the operating room from time to time.

"Jane?" Caroline called out, walking quickly toward him.

"Caroline." Jane looked up, his eyes slightly red.

His appearance, coupled with the fact that he was here all alone, made Caroline’s mind race.

Caroline said, "Let’s go pay the fees first."

When the girl who had been sitting near Jane saw Adrian appear, her eyes suddenly lit up. She immediately stood up, her eyes instantly reddening as she whimpered:

"Adrian, you’re finally here! My brother, he..."

"I... I could only think of you right now."

She lowered her head, raised a hand to wipe her tears, and finally looked up at the man before her, her face a picture of tear-streaked beauty.

Caroline had excellent hearing. She cast a curious look in Adrian’s direction.

"Caroline, thank you. You were the only person I could think of. I hope I didn’t bother you by calling so suddenly today," Jane said weakly.

Hearing this, Adrian followed the sound with his gaze. His eyes narrowed slightly, lingering for a second on Jane’s fair and refined face.

Then he looked up, and his gaze met Caroline’s.

The two of them looked at each other in silence.

After just a moment, Caroline averted her gaze. She turned to take Jane to pay the fees, adding, "Your sister was always good to me back in school. Now that something this serious has happened, I’ll help however I can."

Soon, Adrian’s calm and steady voice came from behind her:

"Milo Morgan and Finn Kaye are on their way. Have you notified your parents?"

"N-Not yet... I was afraid of worrying them."

"Something this serious isn’t a problem that can be solved just by telling us. I’ve already contacted your parents for you."

After paying the fees with Jane, they waited, but none of Autumn’s parents or relatives showed up. So Caroline asked:

"Where are your parents? How come you’re the only one here?"

Jane lowered his eyes. "My sister probably never told you why she dropped out, did she?"

’It was a rhetorical question, really.’

He knew Autumn hadn’t told anyone she was dropping out. Normally, he would respect her wishes and not bring up their family’s private matters.

But after so many years, given what had just happened, it really didn’t make sense for him to be contacting Caroline.

He’d had no choice, though. He knew almost none of Autumn’s classmates and friends, and the old contacts he had saved were unreachable. Only Caroline’s number went through.

Now that Caroline had helped them at such a crucial moment, he had no reason to keep hiding the truth.

Jane’s voice was calm. "They’re gone."

Caroline was surprised, though a part of her had expected it. She figured this must have been the main reason Autumn dropped out of school.

She tactfully decided not to press further, but Jane continued speaking anyway.

"The year my sister dropped out, our family had a major incident. After they passed away, my parents’ company’s funding dried up... My sister took on a lot of part-time jobs to pay off the debt. Tonight, on her way to make a delivery, she was rear-ended by a truck, which caused a pile-up..."

He didn’t seem to want to make it sound too tragic, so he just briefly explained why Autumn had dropped out and what caused the accident.

Caroline could only offer simple words of comfort. "She’ll be okay."

"Thank you, Caroline."

The two of them returned to the area in front of the operating room.

In just a few short minutes, the place had filled with many familiar faces.

Besides Adrian, Milo Morgan and Finn Kaye were there, and even Lily Young was among them.

"Caroline, what are you doing here?" Lily Young asked, startled to see her.

’Her first thought was that Caroline was here for Zane Carson, but that didn’t seem right.’ She glanced at the delicate, handsome young man beside her, her face full of confusion.

She had never seen her cousin bring this person around before.

Caroline said, "A classmate was in a car accident, so I came to visit."

Milo Morgan, a true friend of Adrian’s, had a similarly wired brain. "Your classmate is Zane Carson?"

As soon as he said this, Gene Carson glanced at Caroline curiously.

’They just got out of the elevator together.’

’I thought they came together.’

’Now Milo is talking to her, so maybe she really did come with Adrian.’

"No," Caroline said.

Seeing their misunderstanding, Jane spoke up to explain, "There was another guy who was brought to the hospital with my sister."

"Oh, oh, so who caused the accident?" Lily asked curiously.

She had also just arrived and didn’t know anything.

Jane pressed his lips together and said instinctively, "It wasn’t my sister, anyway."

Lily was embarrassed. "Er, I wasn’t saying it was your sister."

Before long, the doors to two separate emergency operating rooms opened at almost the same time.

"There’s no serious danger. Just wait for the patients to wake up. They’ll need to be hospitalized for a few days for observation."

The doctor saw the crowd of people standing in the hallway as soon as he came out and spoke in a deep voice before they could even ask.

Once they were moved into their hospital rooms, Caroline went in to see Autumn Lawson. She hadn’t seen her in years. The change in her was both significant and subtle.

However, after seeing she was okay, she left the room.

As she turned, Adrian was also just stepping out of the other hospital room.

’Looks like Zane Carson’s injuries aren’t serious either.’
