Chapter 96: Baby, Why Are You Covering Your Ears?
As Caroline Whitman got closer, she noticed Ryan Grant had been covering his ears the whole time.
She asked curiously, "Sweetheart, why are you covering your ears?"
Even though Ryan Grant was covering his ears, he could still hear his mother from this distance, so he answered obediently:
"Daddy told me to cover my ears. He said that lady might say some nasty things, and that I shouldn’t listen. Daddy, can I let go now?"
Adrian Grant said, "Yes, you can."
Caroline Whitman’s mouth twitched. ’I have to admit, his prediction was spot on.’
She quickened her pace to walk beside him and tilted her head to ask, "How did you know what she was going to say? What if she just wanted to catch up with me?"
Adrian Grant’s gaze remained fixed ahead as he said flatly, "Just a precaution."
After a pause, he glanced at her in surprise. "Did she really say those things?"
Caroline Whitman just glanced at Ryan Grant, who was resting on his shoulder. Adrian Grant took the hint and said no more.
The next morning, the two of them went to work separately, and Adrian took the child to Jonathan Grant’s place.
「Grant Ancestral Home.」
They had been notified last night that Adrian Grant would be dropping the child off for a few days.
The news left them so anxious they barely slept, repeatedly checking the room they had already prepared for the boy.
They also had the butler work through the night to procure plenty of new toys and clothes for the child.
At six in the morning, Jonathan Grant and Grace Lawson were already up. The couple ate breakfast and waited for Adrian Grant to bring the child over.
"Hmph. Look at him. That boy’s finally showing his hand, knows to bring the kid over for us to watch," Jonathan Grant grumbled to his wife, craning his neck as he stood by the door to look out.
"He really thinks this is a daycare."
Grace Lawson shot him a sideways glance. "Alright, alright. If you’re so unwilling, just tell our son to turn back and not bring him over."
Jonathan Grant’s eyes widened. "I never said that."
Speak of the devil. A black sedan pulled in.
They resisted the urge to go forward.
When Adrian Grant got out and opened the back door, and a small head popped out, Jonathan Grant finally couldn’t hold back any longer and went over.
"Jump down yourself," Adrian Grant said to Ryan Grant in the car after opening the door.
"Hey, why don’t you jump down yourself?" Jonathan Grant had just walked over when he heard this. He shot his son an irritated look, then smoothly lifted the boy out of the car.
"Grandpa, Grandma." The moment Jonathan Grant picked him up, the little guy greeted them both with a cheerful smile.
"Did you miss us, Ryan?"
"I did."
"Hmph. If you missed us so much, how come you didn’t come visit?"
"Don’t be mad, Grandpa. I’m here to see you now," Ryan Grant said softly.
Grace Lawson turned her head to Adrian Grant. "Look at Ryan, at least he knows to come visit us. And you? We had to call you for so long before you finally deigned to come over."
Adrian Grant: "..."
He slowly followed them into the building.
Jonathan Grant set the child down and patted his little head. "You play here with Miss King. We’re going upstairs with your godfather to get you a present."
Jonathan Grant deliberately emphasized the word "godfather," then gave Adrian Grant a meaningful look.
The little guy hadn’t heard the word "godfather" in a long time. His eyes flashed with a knowing look as he gazed at Adrian, before he called out in a soft, sweet voice, "Godfather."
Adrian Grant: "..."
「The Study.」
"The child is from the future. Is it true?" Jonathan Grant got straight to the point.
After Adrian Grant had told them about this on the phone the other day, they found it utterly unbelievable. They had once again investigated every detail of their son’s life abroad.
They couldn’t find any information on the mother and child, but they could certainly investigate Adrian.
There were no one-night stands, no sperm donations. Even during his year as an exchange student back in the country, they didn’t find anything significant.
All the evidence pointed to one thing: the child had truly appeared out of thin air.
This dealt a massive blow to their worldview.
They would rather believe in ghosts than in some legend about time travel.
Adrian Grant understood his parents’ nature. Their current calmness suggested they had likely done a lot of digging on their own and were finally forced to accept the truth.
"Ryan knows about Zoe Grant."
At the mention of that name, Jonathan Grant and Grace Lawson froze.
Zoe Grant was Jonathan Grant’s second son.
It was a name their family had tacitly avoided mentioning for years.
Five years ago, Zoe Grant had an accident at sea. His fate was unknown. After searching for over a month, they only recovered a piece of his clothing.
Jonathan Grant had kept the matter under wraps.
To this day, the news had not reached Gavin Grant’s ears, for fear that the old man wouldn’t be able to withstand the blow at his age.
This was also why he had returned to the country that year under the pretext of being an exchange student—to accompany his parents while secretly investigating the cause of the accident.
The two brothers had originally been in charge of domestic and overseas business, respectively.
Now, with the board of directors not having seen Zoe Grant in person for so long, Jonathan Grant had no choice but to have Adrian Grant return to the country.
Jonathan Grant’s expression grew heavy. He knew Adrian Grant wouldn’t use Zoe Grant’s situation to trick him into believing something like time travel.
A flicker of hope ignited in Grace Lawson’s heart. "Ryan knows Zoe? Does that mean... Zoe is still alive?"
Her eyes began to redden.
Jonathan Grant also looked up at him, his gaze filled with hope.
When Adrian Grant gave an affirmative nod, Jonathan Grant and Grace Lawson held onto each other, their eyes welling up with tears.
"Really?" Grace Lawson asked in disbelief.
Adrian Grant lifted his gaze to the green scenery outside the window. "Ryan said that Zoe was rescued in a fishing village in Marinus. According to Ryan’s timeline, Zoe should be able to return on his own next year.
When I first got this information, I went to Marinus to look for him myself."
Jonathan Grant quickly pressed, "And then?"
Adrian Grant replied, "I found him."
Seeing his calm demeanor, Grace Lawson grew anxious. "If you found him, why didn’t you tell us?"
Jonathan Grant instantly understood. "Is Zoe... is he..."
He couldn’t get the last few words out.
Adrian Grant nodded gravely. "Yes. When I found him, he was in a coma."
A coma...
Jonathan Grant staggered back two steps.
’In a coma for five years... Doesn’t that mean...’
Grace Lawson’s emotions were on a rollercoaster. She asked with a trembling voice, "Zoe, is he..."
Adrian Grant said, "Zoe is not in a vegetative state."
The elderly couple let out a heavy sigh of relief, then asked, "Then why didn’t you bring him back?"
Adrian Grant said, "Although he’s not in a vegetative state, when I found him, he had just been in a car accident and was still unconscious. After he woke up, I learned he’s had amnesia all these years."
"However," he paused.
Jonathan Grant clutched his heart, gasping for a moment. "However what? You brat, can you stop pausing for dramatic effect? You’re giving me a heart attack!"
Adrian Grant said, "He called me on his own initiative two days ago and asked me to transfer some money to him. I think his memory must have returned."
Jonathan Grant: "..."
Grace Lawson: "..."
