Chapter 149: Who Gave You the Money?
"Uh-huh, I was just passing by that day, and I definitely heard arguing. It sounded like they mentioned Riverfall, and your name, too. I was in a hurry, just passing through, so I didn’t hear everything clearly."
Leah Sinclair’s mind went blank, and she staggered. Mason Grant quickly caught her. "Sis, what’s wrong?"
Leah Sinclair struggled to compose herself, gritting her teeth as she asked, "Aunt Wallace, do you know where my first uncle and his family moved?"
"I do, I do! They were so smug about it at the time. It’s in Norport, in that place called Wisteria Gardens."
"Thank you, Aunt Wallace."
"Leah, I hesitated for a long time about telling you. If... if the Sinclair Family asks..."
"Don’t worry, Aunt Wallace. I won’t say you’re the one who told me."
After hanging up, Leah Sinclair’s face was pale. Mabel Grant walked over with a frown and asked what was wrong. Leah looked at her and said with difficulty, "I need to go to Wisteria Gardens."
Seeing that she wasn’t okay, Mabel Grant immediately had the driver take them to Wisteria Gardens. Leah Sinclair sat in the car, clenching her jaw. Despite the warm air conditioning, a chill ran through her. ’Something is wrong with Grandma Sinclair’s death. I have to get to the bottom of this.’
When they arrived at Wisteria Gardens, they found that Aunt Wallace had only known that First Uncle Sinclair’s family moved here, not the specific building. But that wasn’t a problem. Brandon Jacobs gave instructions to an assistant, and they quickly found the address.
Before long, Leah Sinclair was standing in a daze before a four-story, standalone house. She knew the property prices in Stonecreek; this area had just been developed the year before last.
At the time, the price was set at around eight thousand. But whether it was eight thousand or eight hundred, there was no way First Uncle Sinclair’s family could afford this.
It had only been two months since Grandma Sinclair passed away. Even with the hundred-some thousand that Asher Keating had given them, they couldn’t possibly afford this!
From a distance, a man came strolling over, humming a tune. When he saw the group of people standing at his gate, he yelled, "Hey! Who are you people? What are you doing at my house?"
Leah Sinclair snapped out of her daze and slowly turned her head. "Jack Sinclair!"
"Leah... Leah Sinclair?"
After a moment of shock, Jack Sinclair’s first instinct was to run. The bodyguards reacted instantly, and one of them immediately chased him down and pinned him.
"Let go of me! Who are you people! What gives you the right to grab me!"
Jack Sinclair’s frantic shouts startled the people inside the house. Aunt Sinclair and First Uncle Sinclair opened the door, saw the situation, and started screaming too.
Mabel Grant shot them a cold glance. The bodyguards moved in, restrained everyone, and brought them into the yard.
"Le... Leah?"
First Uncle Sinclair finally got a clear look at the person before him, and his voice began to tremble. Leah Sinclair ignored him, kicked the door open, and walked straight into the house.
Inside the four-story house, all the furniture and appliances were brand new. The decor could only be described as lavish and opulent.
The bodyguards brought everyone inside and shut the door.
"Who... who are you people? What are you doing in my house? Leah Sinclair! What do you think you’re doing?" Aunt Sinclair shouted, her voice trembling as she looked at the intruders.
"Hah. Your house?"
Leah Sinclair slowly circled the room. Hearing her aunt’s words, she let out a cold laugh. "Who gave you the money to buy this house?"
"W-wasn’t it that rich boyfriend of yours?" Aunt Sinclair’s eyes darted around evasively.
"You’re lying! He only gave you a hundred-some thousand. How could a hundred-some thousand buy a house like this, decorated like this?!" Leah Sinclair smashed a set of glass cups from the dining table.
The sudden crash made Aunt Sinclair scream again. Trembling, she didn’t dare to speak, looking desperately at First Uncle Sinclair and Jack Sinclair.
"It was him! The housing prices here are just that cheap! We took out a loan," Jack Sinclair yelled, craning his neck stubbornly.
"Is that so?"
As she spoke, Leah Sinclair walked into the living room. She glanced around, grabbed a rod from behind the door, and strode over to the television, smashing it. The TV crashed to the floor with a LOUD BANG. Aunt Sinclair screamed again, but this time a bodyguard quickly muffled her mouth.
"Who gave you the money?"
Still, no one spoke. They were terrified by Leah Sinclair’s fury. Seeing their silence, Leah went on a rampage, smashing everything in the living room.
"Who gave you the money!" Her eyes were bloodshot as she stared intently at First Uncle Sinclair.
"It... it was a woman with the surname Sterling!" First Uncle Sinclair finally broke, his body trembling as he spoke.
"Madeline Sterling?"
"I don’t know... I don’t know her name. Two months ago, on the day of your grandmother’s accident, a group of people suddenly showed up. The woman in the lead... she asked your grandmother what kind of person she had raised, why a decent person would choose to be... be a whore, a kept woman, and steal the boyfriend of the young lady of the Sterling Family of Riverfall."
"Your grandmother didn’t believe her and started arguing, telling her not to spout nonsense. Then the two of them got into a fight... That person gave her a push, and your grandmother... your grandmother’s foot slipped, and she fell. After that... she wasn’t doing well."
"Later, that woman gave us a million... and told us not to say a word about it. Otherwise... otherwise, the young lady of the Sterling Family would kill our entire family." First Uncle Sinclair finished his story, trembling uncontrollably.
The entire house fell silent. An aura of murderous rage surrounded Leah Sinclair as she walked step by step toward the three members of the Sinclair family, rod in hand. The trio began to tremble.
Leah Sinclair was terrifying right now. No matter how viciously she had fought in the past, she had never been like this. Back then, Grandma Sinclair had always been there to keep her in check. But now that Grandma Sinclair was gone, it was just as she’d said before—there was no one left to hold her back.
"So, for a million, you just let Grandma die like that. Is that it?"
"We didn’t want that either... but it already happened! Besides, isn’t this your fault? If you hadn’t been... been a whore, a kept woman, and stolen someone’s boyfriend, would that woman have come here to say all that? Your grandma wouldn’t have gotten so angry and argued with her," Jack Sinclair muttered, his voice shaking.
"AHH!! My hand!"
The moment Jack Sinclair finished speaking, a bodyguard went up and broke one of his hands. He collapsed to the ground, clutching his hand and wailing in agony.
Mabel Grant took a step forward. "Whose daughter did you call a whore? Hm?"
"What... what daughter?"
First Uncle Sinclair stared at the glamorous, well-dressed woman before him, unable to process what was happening.
Mabel Grant arched an eyebrow and glanced at him. In that instant, he felt as if he had been plunged into an icy cavern. Her gaze was just like the one Asher Keating had given him before, only even colder.
But Leah Sinclair suddenly started laughing. "Mom, I’m going to smash this whole place."
Mabel Grant froze for a second. This was the first time Leah Sinclair had truly called her ’Mom.’ A wave of happiness washed over her. "I’ll have them help."
"No need. I’ll do it myself."
"Alright. Brandon, you make the arrangements."
Brandon Jacobs quickly went and said a few words to the bodyguards. They gagged the three family members and threw them out into the yard.
Alone, Leah Sinclair took the rod and went through the house. The living room, the kitchen, the bedrooms—no place was spared. Every door and every window was smashed to pieces.
