Chapter 136: Willis
The unusual silence along the entire way made Mark stay alert, but he didn’t even know what he was being alert to anymore.
[There isn’t a damn thing on Earth that can be called dangerous in front of this great system. Staying alert is only suitable for useless mortals like you.]
Seeing Mark keep looking around, the system immediately seized the chance to praise itself. This wasn’t a lie, nor was it an exaggeration. The system really was invincible under heaven like that.
"Did you come here to study or to commit a crime? If you know for sure that you have no intention of coming here to cause trouble, then just go ahead and keep walking forward. No one is bored enough to arrange snipers to shoot down students about to enter school."
Nexus’s casual words were recorded by the tiny unmanned surveillance and eavesdropping devices nearby.
The data was sent straight to the security center as well as the snipers hiding in the wilderness who were staring at Mark and Nexus from not far away.
They immediately became startled by Nexus’s observation ability, but at the same time relaxed their guard a little after seeing that Nexus had no hostile intent.
They weren’t overly suspicious, but the fact that two strangers were heading to the American Hunter Academy was simply too suspicious. Nexus and Mark were taking a route that normally no student or teacher would ever take.
"Master, don’t scare me anymore. I can’t dodge bullets from that sniper rifle. Even if it’s a pistol, I can’t dodge it either."
Mark’s eyelids twitched, and he kept looking around again. In terms of stats, Mark’s body was now fast and strong enough to dodge pistol bullets head-on at close range. But that was only possible if Mark actually knew how to dodge bullets, and even then he could only dodge one or two at most.
After walking for a long time, they finally reached the main gate of the American Hunter Academy. The gate was so huge that Mark had to tilt his head all the way back to look up at it.
"Is this really a gate for people to enter? I feel like several airplanes could fly through this gate at the same time."
Even though it was nighttime, the academy’s lights brightly illuminated the entire surrounding area. It seemed that saving electricity had never been something the academy cared about.
Mark looked around and discovered that this place was suspiciously empty. Logically speaking, there should still be many students around even at night.
"Master, is there something wrong with this place? Why can’t I see anyone?"
Before Nexus and the system could even answer, an old man from the small security room moved toward them in an automatic wheelchair.
The old man looked quite healthy for his age, except that he was missing both legs. If he hadn’t lost his legs, with his physical condition he could still run and jump around without a problem.
Despite his advanced age, Willis’s ice-blue eyes were still very bright. His silver hair was all messed up, making him look just like those busy scientists who had no time to shower or cut their hair.
In contrast to his messy hairstyle, his handlebar mustache was extremely curved and meticulously groomed.
"You little brat, what are you doing here at this hour? Don’t you know breaking in without permission is very dangerous?"
He ignored Nexus and immediately gave Mark a good scolding, leaving Mark dumbfounded.
Mark was dumbfounded because he didn’t know what he had done wrong. He had only followed his master’s orders and come here. He wasn’t the one who planned this whole thing.
"I don’t know anything at all. Go ask my master."
Willis followed the direction Mark pointed and saw Nexus standing there casually, not even bothering to glance at Willis.
Beside Nexus was a system screen. On the screen was a face looking at him with disdain, as if it were looking at something beneath it.
This strange combination made Willis’s aged eyelids twitch. Just where did these strange people come from?
"What are you two doing here?"
"My disciple recommended us to this place. She even wrote us a letter of recommendation ."
Nexus simply took the letter of recommendation written by White and handed it to Willis.
After taking the letter of recommendation, Willis immediately frowned. He didn’t know who would dare write a letter of recommendation like this to let Mark and Nexus join the American Hunter Academy.
The academy was famous for having absolutely no corruption, so who would dare openly pull strings and give them a backdoor into the academy like this?
The moment he opened the letter of recommendation, before Willis could even read a single word, the system went berserk.
[Mortal! How dare a lowly existence like you use such vile words to insult the greatest system in the universe? You bastard, you piece of trash, you...]
Even though this wasn’t the first time it had read the contents of the letter of recommendation, the system still immediately went crazy and kept cursing White nonstop.
However, it didn’t mention White’s name, so Willis’s face turned dark because he felt like the system was cursing him.
White’s letter of recommendation was extremely brief, so Willis finished reading it with just one glance. After reading it, he immediately frowned.
"You call this nonsense a letter of recommendation?"
"I’m not sure, but White told me so."
Nexus shrugged and honestly replied. Meanwhile, the system continued cursing nonstop, even though the person who was supposed to hear the curses, White, wasn’t even here.
Seeing Nexus’s completely unfazed expression, Willis could only sigh and rub his forehead. Naturally, he wasn’t going to return this letter of recommendation either.
"I’m just a security guard, so I don’t have the authority to decide. But I’ll pass this letter to the principal and let him decide. Go fifteen miles in that direction, and there’s a small city.
If you want to find a place to stay, go there. The academy is currently on break, and classes won’t start for another week. Come here again then. If the principal agrees, I’ll let you in."
Mark was dumbfounded because none of the situations he had imagined in his head happened. There was no scolding, no dramatic scene, no tearing up the letter and chasing them away.
"Thanks."
Nexus nodded and patted Mark on the shoulder, signaling him to leave with him.
