Chapter 134: Lesson Number Four
Without the military standing beside him and staring at him, Mark really did feel much less pressure. But that little bit of pressure was nothing compared to the pressure from the mine-filled path.
Mark cautiously took two steps forward. Just as he was about to put his foot down for the third step, Mark suddenly stopped.
His brain suddenly sent out a strong warning signal, so Mark chose another spot to put his foot down. This time, luckily, nothing exploded.
The system made Mark retain just enough to keep him from completely forgetting everything. If Mark forgot everything, he would blow himself to pieces every time after taking just three or four steps.
However, the other deep impression in Mark’s brain was limited to the spots he had stepped on and the mines that had exploded. After safely taking the third step, everything was once again completely a blind box.
Mark’s luck showed its full ability, allowing him to luckily take a few more steps before he once again blew himself to pieces.
[Is the brain of this useless mortal an unnecessary abnormality of creation? How can he be this stupid? If he keeps going like this, he won’t even be able to reach the foot of the mountain by midnight.]
The system did not immediately revive Mark and instead started complaining. It was really annoyed by this progress that was slower than a crawling turtle.
"He’s really bad. He could clearly do much better, but he’s performing this badly just because it’s his first time facing mines. There are many new things in this world. If he fumbles around like an idiot every time he encounters something new, that’s not good."
Nexus gently shook his head. About this matter, the system was completely right. Originally, he thought it was unnecessary, but it seemed that Lesson Number Four had to begin now.
[Trashy master, it seems you have the same thought as me. Lesson Number Four to train Mark’s adaptability is starting now. What do you think we should do?]
The system really liked the feeling of having complete control over the decision, but it could only do that when Nexus allowed it. Nexus had not given it the authority yet, so of course, no matter how much it disliked it, it still had to ask for his opinion.
"Just keep going like this. But I think we should let Mark remember what happened clearly. Otherwise, who knows when he’ll be able to get down the mountain."
Nexus did not feel that there was any problem with waiting. But what about the system and Mark? He was certain that the two of them could not wait as long as they wanted like he could.
[Alright. Even so, I’m sure Mark will die at least twenty times before reaching the foot of the mountain.]
The system agreed and immediately let Mark come back to life again. An ordinary person only had one life. Mark might look unlucky, but the number of lives he had seemed endless.
"Huh? I died again. I didn’t even have time to feel the pain."
Mark blinked in confusion as he looked at his master and the system. He had experienced all kinds of physical pain already. Dying from these extremely powerful mines could be considered the least painful kind because his brain did not even have time to react before he died.
A hand smacked him right on the back of the head. The person who hit him was, of course, Nexus because Nexus felt that Mark’s current attitude toward death was very bad compared to his strength.
Not being afraid of death was a plus, but not being afraid of death because he knew that no matter how many times he died, he could be revived was a major minus. This was Mark’s unconscious dependence on the system and its power.
"Just because death doesn’t hurt, you can ignore death? You should remember that you’ve never had that many lives. Right now, you can revive simply because we’re teaching you Lesson Number Four.
In the future, you may have to fight enemies. When that happens, if you die, at most we’ll give you a proper grave. We won’t give you another chance to start over."
Nexus might usually be indifferent, but he still remembered that he was currently a master... Well, it seems that the more havoc Lucifer wrecks in Hell, the more emotions Nexus experiences and the more actions he takes.
Mark was not an idiot either, so of course he understood what Nexus meant. But could this really be blamed on Mark?
The system could interfere with his memory whenever it wanted, change it whenever it wanted. Mark’s mind was still unstable right now.
Luckily, the system still worked with some restraint. Otherwise, Mark really would not even remember who he was anymore.
"I understand."
Taking a deep breath, Mark nodded. He walked step by step toward the path down the mountain. This time, he would definitely be more careful...
Mark didn’t make it very far before he once again blew himself to pieces. He really was careful this time, but a useless person was still a useless person.
The system looked at Nexus, and Nexus looked back at the system. Both of them felt that Mark was too useless, but at least Mark would not give up.
[This useless mortal gets nothing right in any lesson. If it weren’t for his willpower being passable, I really would have thrown him somewhere far away and stopped teaching him anything.]
The system cursed in annoyance. The system’s expectations were always beyond what its disciple could reach, so it would be strange if it wasn’t disappointed.
"I’ve already reminded him, so I’ve done my part. Just let him keep trying until he reaches the foot of the mountain."
After saying everything that needed to be said, Nexus no longer cared. He was a master, not a babysitter, so he would not help Mark everywhere all the time.
After coming back to life once again, Mark did not say much and relied on his memory to avoid the places with mines. But the farther he went, the more unreasonable the number of mines became, causing Mark to blow himself to pieces again and again.
There were so many mines that after dying more than ten times, Mark started to lose track of the exact locations of each mine.
