Chapter 125: FALSE ALLIANCES
<Chapter - 125 False Alliances>
The high-sector frontier sun dipped beneath the jagged canyon bluffs, casting long, dark violet shadows across the dusty expanse of District 9’s staging perimeter.
The acrid stench of scorched diesel, melted titanium hydraulic fluid, and raw, volatile mana hung thick over the valley. Following the mysterious sabotage of the deep extraction drills at Level 6, the frontier had devolved into an armed standoff. Heavily armored personnel carriers and tracked combat transports bearing the iron wolf of the Ironfang Syndicate and the gear-crest of Vance Heavy Industries formed two opposing, reinforced perimeter barricades.
Between the two corporate camps, dozens of independent low-ranking porters, desperate prospectors, and F-rank laborers sat huddled on the frozen mud.
They were surrounded by heavily armed mercenary enforcers wielding high-voltage shock-batons and assault rifles. The corporate executives, furious at losing their multi-million-credit mining rigs to unknown subterranean traps, had instituted an emergency labor draft—intending to force unranked commoners down the compromised shafts to trigger the defensive mines by foot.
Noah Kurtz walked along the perimeter fence, his posture relaxed in his signature unhurried slouch.
His hands were shoved deep into the pockets of his dark woolen coat, his ash-black hair shifting in the dry canyon breeze. Pinned over his left lapel, the dark ironwood leaf brooch absorbed the harsh ambient noise of the encampment, humming in steady, silent equilibrium. Underneath his sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards lay quiet, their internal Ki loop circulating seamlessly with his newly integrated 4.10% Gold Sovereign Authority.
Walking beside him, her pale fingers linked naturally within his right palm, was Rin Asakura.
Rin wore her soft lavender traveling kimono, the white woolen shawl draped gently over her shoulders. Her simple wooden practice sword swayed lightly at her left hip.
Her crystalline violet eyes looked across the crowded staging yard.
Without a blindfold, and with the full depth of Asura’s Touch intertwined with her unsealed void-sight, Rin mapped the dark, corrupt intentions of the corporate officers. She saw the mercenary captains counting the shivering porters like expendable currency, their hearts beating with cold, predatory calculation.
Slowly, Rin leaned her shoulder lightly against Noah’s arm, her delicate fingers tightening their warm grip around his hand.
"Their eyes are hollow, Noah..." Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying an intimate warmth that cut through the roaring engines. "They lost their machines to the earth, so now they wish to throw human flesh into the dark to buy their profits."
Noah looked down into her clear violet eyes, his steel-gray gaze softening with quiet, genuine tenderness. He gently squeezed her fingers, his thumb brushing across her knuckles with steady warmth.
"The guilds never change, Rin," Noah spoke softly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying the quiet calm of ancient eons. "When their tools break, they treat commoners like fuel. They think an F-rank tag means a man doesn’t have a spine."
Behind them, the rhythmic, heavy slap-slap of rubber soles hitting the gravel echoed through the dust.
Jiho Park trudged forward, his faded slide sandals kicking aside spent bullet casings and loose gravel. The massive S-Rank Juggernaut balanced his oversized canvas duffel bag over his broad right shoulder, the bag bulging with five hundred pounds of refined gold matrix ore and a massive, round Vega melon. In his left hand, he held a thick chunk of dried beef jerky, chewing on it with a slow, sleep-deprived crunch.
"Man," Jiho mumbled around his food, his droopy eyes half-shut as he peered at the armed mercenaries. "Master, those guys in the spiked armor are pointing their guns at those skinny shovel guys. They look pretty angry. Are they trying to steal our dinner spot?"
"They’re drafting meat shields, Jiho," Chloe Harrington called out, strolling casually on Noah’s left.
Chloe had her dark leather duster unbuttoned over a canvas vest, her dead platinum revolvers resting quietly in their holsters. She flipped her silver coin in a lazy, glittering arc, catching it with an effortless, rhythmic snap. Her amber eyes glowed with sharp, golden probability lines as she surveyed the mercenary command tent.
"Probability vectors on their operational planning are completely desperate, Boss," Chloe smirked, pocketing her coin. "The Vance Clan and the Ironfang Syndicate just signed an emergency coalition pact. They’re offering a pathetic fifty credits to any porter who walks down the primary shaft to clear the kinetic traps. If they refuse, the mercenaries force them at gunpoint."
"Look at this one!" a harsh, grating voice barked from the perimeter path.
Three heavily armored Ironfang vanguard officers stepped forward, blocking the road.
The lead officer was a hulking B-rank enforcer clad in reinforced star-iron plate, wielding a heavy, six-foot kinetic shock-halberd that hissed with unstable blue lightning. He looked down at Noah’s worn dark woolen coat, then at Jiho’s slide sandals and sweatpants, his scarred face twisting into an arrogant, predatory sneer.
"You four," the enforcer barked, pointing the tip of his crackling halberd directly at Noah’s chest. "The Ironfang-Vance Consortium has commandeered all unranked personnel in District 9. Drop your baggage, grab a shovel, and get to the front of the intake line."
Noah didn’t stop. He kept his hands buried casually inside his coat pockets, continuing his unhurried slouch forward.
The mercenary officer’s eyes flared with violent rage. "I’m talking to you, scruffy F-rank trash! You want me to put a hole through your chest before you even reach the tunnel?"
The officer took a heavy, aggressive step forward, raising his kinetic shock-halberd to slam the butt of the weapon into Noah’s collarbone.
Before the heavy weapon could descend by an inch, a soft, fluid shadow blurred across the space.
Rin Asakura stepped smoothly out from Noah’s side.
Her lavender kimono swished like whispering silk against the dust. She did not draw her wooden sword with brute force; she merely placed the polished tip of the wooden scabbard flat against the joint of the enforcer’s armored wrist.
Tap.
A subtle, zero-friction pulse of Noah’s shared Gold Sovereign Ki resonated through the wood.
CRACK!
The enforcer’s heavy star-iron gauntlet shattered along its molecular stress lines, the kinetic halberd slipping from his paralyzed fingers and clattering harmlessly onto the gravel.
The mercenary stumbled back three paces, clutching his numb arm in sheer, breathless shock as he looked at the slender, violet-eyed woman standing calmly before him.
Rin looked at the three trembling officers, her crystalline violet eyes shining with lethal, serene clarity. Her melodic, formal cadence echoed through the quiet camp like the chime of a temple bell.
"The space around the clerk does not welcome thieves," Rin spoke softly, her voice filled with quiet, unyielding authority. "Lower your weapons, or leave your hands in the dust."
"Y-You..." the officer stammered, backing away in terror as he felt the chilling, bottomless depth of her gaze. "A blind girl with a toy sword... broken my gauntlet...?!"
"Man," Jiho Park mumbled, stepping up beside Rin and letting out a long, jaw-cracking yawn that shook the canvas tents nearby. He looked down at the three guards with sleepy indifference, scratching his stomach through his tank top. "Master, these guys are really noisy. Should I stack them on top of that truck over there so we can eat in peace?"
"No need, Jiho," Noah Kurtz replied flatly, his steel-gray eyes cold and clinical as he stepped past the frozen mercenaries. "They have bigger problems coming from the north."
Right on cue, Alistair Vance’s frantic voice crackled through the comms earpiece.
"Boss! Boss, look at the seismic telemetry!" Alistair yelled, typing furiously from his concealed perch. "The Ironfang executives just realized their manual draft failed! They’ve authorized the deployment of an illegal, unregistered S-Rank Siege Construct from their subterranean vault to force the mine open! It’s moving toward District 9 right now!"
Noah Kurtz didn’t flinch. He reached out, his warm fingers smoothly sliding back into Rin’s pale palm, interlocking their hands with quiet, unbreakable protection.
Rin turned her violet eyes up toward his profile, a serene, radiant smile curving her pale lips.
"Let them bring their machine, Noah..." Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his sleeve. "We will break their siege together."
"Jiho," Noah spoke calmly, looking toward the trembling canyon road ahead. "Get ready to catch a drill."
"Got it, Master!" Jiho grinned sleepily, taking one last massive bite of beef jerky. "I love catching drills."
