THE BOYS: The Wrong Main Character

"Well, let’s see the difference between cursed energy and cursed techniques... let’s see," Mark said, flipping through the book.

None of them looked particularly convinced they were about to learn anything. Megumi sat quietly, unreadable as always.

Nobara already looked annoyed. Yuji, at least, seemed genuinely interested — he still knew next to nothing about jujutsu society and had been looking forward to actually learning how it worked.

Mark flipped another page. "Let’s see..."

Nobara had had enough. "Do you even know anything? You’ve been saying ’let’s see’ since the start of class. If you don’t know, just stop pretending."

Mark lowered the book. "You’ve got a lot to say for someone who hasn’t let me finish."

"I’m just pointing out what everyone’s thinking."

Megumi glanced at her but said nothing. Yuji looked between them, unsure whether to laugh.

Mark closed the book and leaned back. "Fine. You want to know if I actually understand the subject?"

Nobara crossed her arms. "Yeah."

"I don’t know."

Dead silence.

Even Yuji visibly deflated. "...What?"

Mark shrugged like he’d given the most obvious answer in the world. "I don’t know."

"I was actually looking forward to learning something," Yuji groaned.

Megumi stared at Mark, already regretting the entire class.

Nobara’s eye twitched. "Then why the hell are you teaching us?"

"Theory is for nerds. I’m strong. " He pointed at himself.

"I’m strong."

"You just repeated yourself."

"Because it’s important."

Yuji dropped his head onto the desk. "I can’t believe this."

Nobara rubbed her forehead. "We got the strongest idiot as our teacher."

Megumi sighed quietly. "At least he’s honest."

"See? Megumi gets it."

"I wasn’t complimenting you."

"If you want to complain, do it after you beat me," Mark said with total confidence.

The three first-years went quiet.

They’d already seen what he could do at the detention center — watched him tear through a special-grade curse without breaking a sweat, using techniques none of them could even begin to understand.

None of them had forgotten how easily he’d handled something they’d been warned could kill them.

Nobara’s bravado deserted her first. She stared at him for a few seconds, then looked away. "...Never mind."

Yuji had been about to argue, but the memory of that special grade getting steamrolled came flooding back. "Yeah... maybe we should just learn."

Megumi said nothing. He opened his notebook.

Mark looked at the three of them. "Good decision."

Nobara clicked her tongue. "Don’t get comfortable. I’m still complaining."

"After you beat me."

She shut up instantly.

Yuji quietly opened his book. "Okay, teach. Let’s start with cursed energy."

"See? Now we’re making progress."

Megumi glanced at him. "Are you actually going to teach us?"

Mark looked down at the textbook. "...Probably."

Nobara’s face fell. "You’re fucking kidding me."

"If you want to learn, why don’t you learn from Megumi?" Mark said, pointing at him. "Let him teach you."

Megumi gave him his usual tired look. "Why me?"

"Because you actually know what you’re talking about."

Nobara turned toward Megumi immediately. "Fine. At least he can explain it properly."

Yuji nodded, already paying attention.

Megumi sighed and looked at the three of them. "Cursed energy and cursed techniques aren’t the same thing. Cursed energy comes from negative emotions. Sorcerers control that energy and use it for things like reinforcing their bodies or attacking curses."

Yuji nodded slowly. "Okay, I get that part."

"A cursed technique is different. It’s an ability that channels cursed energy in a specific way. Most innate techniques are something a sorcerer’s born with, and the technique determines how they manipulate their energy."

"My Ten Shadows Technique lets me summon shikigami through my shadows. Cursed energy powers it, but the technique itself is Ten Shadows."

Yuji perked up. "So having a lot of cursed energy doesn’t automatically mean your technique’s powerful?"

"Right. They’re separate things. A big reserve doesn’t mean your technique’s strong, and a strong technique doesn’t mean you have huge reserves."

Mark leaned back, satisfied he’d successfully avoided teaching anything himself.

Nobara noticed. "You really are making Megumi do your job."

"He’s doing a better job than I would’ve."

Megumi shot him an irritated look. "Then why are you the teacher?"

"Because I got the position."

"That’s not an answer."

"It’s the only one you’re getting."

"Teacher, what about my cursed technique?" Yuji asked. "Do I have one?"

Mark looked at him. "You don’t have one."

Yuji’s expression fell instantly. "No cursed technique?"

"None."

He stared at his own hands. "But I can use cursed energy, right?"

"Yeah. That’s because of Sukuna’s finger and the fact that you’re his vessel. You weren’t born with an innate technique, so you’re not exactly a naturally gifted sorcerer."

Yuji looked more confused. "So I’m just... a guy who can use cursed energy because I ate a cursed object?"

"Pretty much."

Nobara looked at him. "That’s actually kind of pathetic."

"Hey!"

Megumi sighed. "Don’t listen to her."

Mark leaned back. "No cursed technique doesn’t mean you can’t get strong. It just means you’ll be relying on cursed energy, physical ability, and whatever else you pick up."

Yuji nodded slowly, still visibly disappointed. "So I really don’t have a technique."

"Not right now."

He looked up. "Not right now?"

Mark shrugged. "Who knows what happens later?"
