Chapter 97: Interest Is Not Ownership
Venielle did not begin by defending the House of Gemini when Marek asked what the House could legally demand from Mara. That helped far more than an enthusiastic answer about protection, opportunity, or tradition would have.
At least she seemed to understand that an offer of help meant very little if the person offering it could decide the price afterward.
She placed a folded square of silver-white fabric on the table between them. Something small had been wrapped inside it. When Venielle opened the cloth, a roughly circular Gemini emblem was revealed. The emblem had two weathered faces turned away from each other across a narrow golden divide, framed by matching crescents and dark wings, with a star above them. It looked less like an ornament and more like an old House token.
Marek did not touch it.
"This identifies Mara as someone permitted to enter certain protected areas of the House of Gemini," Venielle explained. "Some older Gemini mirrors, gates, and other House instruments can recognize the emblem. If she carries it, they may allow her access where an Astrant from Earth would normally be refused."
Marek’s attention moved from the emblem to her. "And accepting it gives the House what?"
"Nothing by itself."
"Then why offer it?"
"Because it lets Mara enter certain protected areas and shows people in the House of Gemini that she has permission to be there."
’That’s not exactly it. Still, why?’
Marek leaned slightly closer to the table without touching the cloth. "Help she would eventually owe the House for?"
"No. Accepting the emblem does not mean she owes the House of Gemini anything. Any obligation would have to be agreed to separately."
"So the House gets a reason to approach her, but not a claim over her."
Venielle nodded. "It allows us to offer assistance. Whether Mara accepts anything beyond that remains her decision."
Mara’s eyes moved between them as Venielle continued, "Some people will see the emblem and assume access means affiliation. Others may assume affiliation means obligation. Those assumptions could become inconvenient later, but they still would not give the House ownership of her."
That was the word Marek had been waiting for.
He went through the possibilities one after another, asking whether accepting the emblem created a training obligation, automatic citizenship, or some House oath that Mara might unknowingly enter by choosing to walk this path.
When Venielle denied each possibility, Marek moved on to titles, contracts, and any other arrangement Mara might have agreed to without fully understanding it. At fourteen, being smart did not mean she already had the knowledge or experience to understand everything she might be agreeing to, especially when those agreements involved a House she had barely begun to understand.
"None," Venielle answered.
Marek studied her for several seconds, waiting for whatever condition she had not mentioned yet. ’Why go to this much trouble for Mara? The Pisces dream explains some of it, but this still feels suspiciously generous for a political giant like the House of Gemini.’
Mara groaned beside him. "We already did this with Mom, and somehow she asked more questions than you."
Marek turned toward her with genuine doubt. "More?"
"She asked everything you just asked, then wanted to know who would be responsible if I got hurt during training, whether they could move me somewhere without telling her, and whether accepting anything from the House of Gemini meant we suddenly owed taxes."
"Taxes?"
Mara nodded. "Mom said governments become honest when money is involved."
Marek considered that longer than Mara apparently expected before nodding. "Reasonable."
A laugh came from near the window. Rhovan had been sitting there for most of the conversation, apparently content to observe until the exchange became too entertaining to ignore. "I continue to learn fascinating things about your family."
Mara stared at her brother. "You really are just like Mom."
"I don’t know why you’re saying that like it’s an insult."
"It wasn’t entirely an insult."
"Then you should work on your delivery."
Mara opened her mouth to respond, but Venielle continued before the exchange could become another argument. "The more important point is that the House of Gemini may eventually take an interest in Mara. But to be clear, interest is not ownership, and neither is recognition."
Marek’s attention returned immediately. "Because of that high-Cycle Pisces Astrant’s dream?"
"Partly."
The answer came quickly enough that he immediately caught the implication. "Then what’s the other part?"
Venielle looked toward Mara instead of answering him.
His sister’s expression tightened slightly before she gave a reluctant nod.
"The paired mirrors acknowledged her," Venielle said.
Marek waited several seconds for the rest of the explanation before tapping one finger against the table. "What does it mean for the paired mirrors to acknowledge her?"
Venielle turned toward him. "The mirrors Mara encountered were far older than the ones we used during her lesson. They were created for advanced correspondence training inside the House of Gemini, but the principle is the same one I already showed you."
"Source and copy."
"Yes. One mirror anchors the source. The other maintains the corresponding side created from it. The Astrant standing between them is expected to recognize which is which and establish the correspondence properly."
Marek remembered the two keys and the lesson that followed. Moving them had not changed which one came first. Losing track of the source did not make the distinction disappear simply because the two objects looked identical.
Venielle rested one hand beside the folded cloth. "The old mirrors test that distinction from opposing reference positions. Under normal circumstances, they do not return the same judgment immediately. The Astrant must establish the relationship first and demonstrate that the source and copy remain connected without confusing one for the other."
"They disagree by default?" Marek asked.
"In simple terms, yes."
He frowned. "But one is still the source, and one is still the copy."
"Correct." Venielle glanced toward Mara before continuing. "What was abnormal was the way the mirrors responded to her identity. Once correspondence is properly established, one side normally answers according to the source while the other answers according to what was created from it. When Mara stood between them, both mirrors recognized her as Mara Vale without rejecting either side as false."
Marek frowned as the implication settled in. "So neither side rejected her as false."
Venielle’s gaze remained on him. "Exactly."
The amusement disappeared from Rhovan’s face.
Marek noticed immediately, though his eyes moved toward him for only a moment before returning to Venielle. "Is that supposed to happen?"
"No. A sufficiently experienced Gemini Astrant might deliberately produce something similar under specific conditions, but Mara did it without knowing what the mirrors were, without understanding what they were testing, and without intentionally establishing the correspondence."
Mara lowered her eyes. "I thought they were normal mirrors."
Marek turned toward her. "Not knowing what they were doesn’t make walking between them a better idea."
"I already admitted I should have asked."
"You admitted it after doing it."
"Yes. That’s usually when people admit mistakes."
He let the matter go and returned to the question that had been bothering him since Venielle mentioned the mirrors. "Did the Pisces record describe what happened with them?"
Venielle did not answer.
But Mara did. "It described someone both sides would accept as real without either side being treated as false."
Marek slowly turned toward her. She already looked uncomfortable.
"Some translations of that Pisces record call that person the True One," Mara continued.
