Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Chapter 34: One Permitted Motion

The woman smiled at Marek.

She lowered her head in a brief greeting before returning her attention to the medical forms held against her chest.

There was nothing unusual about it.

She appeared to be somewhere in her forties. Her hair had been tied behind her head. She wore the same identification band issued to civilians transferred into Section Nine and the same loose clothing taken from the facility’s emergency supply.

Her smile had not contained recognition.

It looked like the polite response of a middle-aged woman who had noticed a younger stranger staring at her from across a crowded ward. The slight bow ended the exchange without requiring either of them to speak.

Marek had also been watching her first.

Several people inside the facility already knew his face. Medical personnel had called his name while moving him between patients. Others had seen him examining Ophiuchus Marks or heard that he remained conscious despite having two occupied scales.

A civilian noticing him did not mean anything.

The light beneath her sleeve had also disappeared. Hundreds of Awakened people throughout the facility produced unfamiliar light whenever their Marks reacted. One more brief pattern along someone’s wrist was not enough to separate her from everyone else.

More importantly, the voice had claimed to be outside Earth. The woman beside the damaged cart was standing less than thirty meters away. However, that was not a guarantee that the earlier voice had told him the truth.

Marek lowered his gaze.

The cart moved again. Its damaged wheel made the same short sound each time it completed a turn. The woman passed behind a temporary partition and disappeared among the medical stations.

Henry moved closer to the table. "You know her?"

"No."

"Do not tell me you are interested in women twice your age. You were staring."

"She was staring too." Marek remained passive and did not even glance at Henry.

Henry glanced toward the partition. "Maybe she noticed you staring."

"That happened afterward." Marek closed the notebook.

The connection inside his mind had already weakened. He directed another question toward where the voice had been, but nothing received it.

The route had never belonged to him. Whatever allowed the voice to reach him existed entirely on the speaker’s side.

Marek returned to the patient records.

The next pages concerned Ophiuchus bearers who had not yet collapsed. Some reported pressure inside their black centers. Others described empty scales becoming heavy even though nothing visible occupied them. Several admitted that fear caused their Marks to pull at every unfamiliar sensation nearby.

Marek read the same paragraph twice.

A faint pressure appeared behind his right ear.

It felt like the moment before a blocked ear opened, except the sounds around him did not change. The printer continued. Shoes crossed the concrete. Someone called for more gauze near the western partition.

The pressure moved toward the back of his head.

Then the woman’s voice returned.

"You are doing that incorrectly."

Marek’s fingers tightened around the page. The paper bent before he released it. "Doing what?"

"Searching for danger with an open Mark."

"I am reading."

"You are examining the people described on the page."

Marek had not entered the Quiet Room or deliberately activated anything. However, the black center had become cold while he read about the other bearers.

"What should I do instead?"

"Begin with yourself."

Marek placed one hand near his right shoulder without touching the Mark. The two occupied scales remained quiet beneath his shirt. The black center felt different.

It had already turned toward the records.

"You know what the scales are for," the woman said.

"They contain things."

"They hold conditions placed under Ophiuchus custody."

The wording was close to what Marek understood, but not identical to the language produced by his interface. He did not mention the difference.

"The center is not another scale," she continued. "Do not treat it as additional space."

"I do not."

"You reach through it whenever you examine someone."

The woman could know public Ophiuchus principles without knowing about the words inside Marek’s mind. Containment, custody, boundaries, and refusal could all be common knowledge in the Prime Continuum.

His interface was not common knowledge. None of the other Ophiuchus bearers within the facility had described anything similar.

"Ophiuchus begins with a boundary. First establish what belongs to you. Only then decide what may enter your custody."

Marek thought about the Taurus detainee.

His Mark had identified compatibility before Marek understood what was trying to transfer. He stopped the process only after separating compatibility from acceptance.

"What is the first boundary?"

"Self and foreign."

"That is broad."

"Because you are still Unfixed."

"Unfixed?"

"Your authority exists, but its safe movement has not settled. Your intention begins one action while your Mark completes another."

That described the First Motions Marek had witnessed. Marek intended to examine a condition. His Mark searched for somewhere to put it.

The woman instructed him to choose one occupied-center patient without touching them. Marek selected Devin.

"Do not search for a route," she said. "Ask only whether the bearer and the Case containing him remain separate."

Marek focused on Devin’s body behind the temporary screen.

The Quiet Room began forming.

He stopped it.

The ward remained around him. The printer continued. A nurse spoke beside another patient.

Pressure gathered beneath Marek’s Mark.

The first part of a message appeared.

[SUBJECT—]

Marek ended the examination before it completed.

The pressure withdrew.

"You opened too much," the woman said.

"How do you know?"

"Your breathing changed."

Marek tried again.

This time, he held one distinction.

Devin.

The Case containing Devin.

The cold around the black center remained, but the surrounding scales did not react. No transfer path opened. The unfinished words did not return.

For several seconds, Marek sensed the Case without the usual pull toward taking responsibility for it. Then the black center tried to complete the examination on its own.

Marek stopped.

"You lasted longer."

"Not long enough."

"No."

"What happens if I continue?"

"You may open a route before understanding what will cross it."

"I can refuse."

"If you recognize the route before the Mark accepts it."

That was the problem.

The unresponsive Ophiuchus bearers had not deliberately placed themselves inside their black centers. Their Marks identified a dangerous condition and a compatible Vessel.

The condition happened to be the bearer.

By the time the process became visible, the Case had already closed around them.

"How do you prevent this?"

"Training. Supervision. Stillglass when neither is enough."

Marek wrote the unfamiliar word beneath his earlier questions.

STILLGLASS.

"What is it?"

"A temporary restraint placed over an Astral Mark. It holds an Unfixed authority to one permitted movement."

"It suppresses the power?"

"It narrows it. Suppression closes everything. Stillglass leaves one controlled action available."

A device that allowed observation but prevented intake would give Marek time to understand a Case before his Mark acted.

"How long does it work?"

"Several hours if the calibration is correct."

"Do you have one?"

The connection became quiet.

"One," she eventually answered.

"Can you send it?"

The lights above the eastern entrance dimmed.

Marek raised his head.

Darkness moved through the Exhibition Center in sections. One row of lights went out, followed by the next. Medical monitors remained active on battery power. The public-address system stopped halfway through a name.

The overhead fans slowed.

Then they began turning in different directions.

Air crossed the ward through separate paths. Loose papers lifted from tables but did not scatter. Temporary curtains pulled toward the central aisle, then released.

Marek’s heartbeat increased.

His jaw tightened as he scanned the ward.

Security personnel had noticed. Medical workers checked the occupied-center patients. Several people raised their hands toward their newly active Marks.

The woman’s voice remained steady.

"Keep your notebook open."

Something struck the inside of the ventilation duct above Marek.

He moved his chair back.

The object stopped.

The nearest fan reversed.

A second impact moved through the metal.

Whatever traveled through the duct followed the changing air pressure. It stopped whenever one fan slowed and continued when another opened a route farther along the ceiling.

Marek checked the ward.

The nearest security officer faced the electrical panels. Henry remained beside another medical table. Clara held Cooper’s immobilizer while watching the ceiling.

Nobody was watching Marek.

The object reached the final opening as the last row of lights went out. A narrow case dropped from the duct.

Marek caught it against the open notebook.

His other hand covered it immediately.

The lights returned.

The fans resumed their normal direction. The public-address system continued from the same interrupted syllable.

The entire event had lasted less than twenty seconds.

Marek kept his hand over the case while examining the ward.

Several people had noticed something falling near him, but most remained focused on the outage. Henry turned in his direction. Marek pulled the notebook closer. The case was thinner than his phone. A transparent patch was sealed inside.

Thirteen fine lines surrounded an empty black circle. Marek had not touched it. The lines moved anyway.

They shifted across the surface one by one until every broken shape matched the exact position of the scales around his Mark.
