Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 110: The Market Moves

Severin kept his finger beside the first route mark while Nyra bent over the road sheet.

"This branch," she said, touching the west freight line with a nail. "They’re still handling something through it after the meeting. The cross-town branch too. The marks connect to carts."

Her finger moved again, then stopped over a third line.

"And that?" Severin asked.

"Still used. That’s all I can give you from this packet."

Marienne turned a sheet under her hand. "Same-day handling. Not an exact departure time."

Nyra glanced at her. "I was getting there."

"You were getting ambitious."

Alicia’s ears twitched. Severin kept his attention on the map.

"Bring Tressa and Saelith," he told the manor runner outside the records-room door. "Their working papers too."

The runner left at once.

Tressa arrived first with a narrow page folded inside her folio. Saelith followed carrying the local route map. Marienne kept the recovered packet on her side of the table and turned only the relevant lines toward them.

Tressa read a mark, then another. Her mouth tightened.

"This branch passes the same area as unresolved missing-person reports," she said. "That’s not me saying they’re in the market. It’s me saying I don’t like the overlap."

"Good," Severin said. "Don’t make it more than that."

Saelith laid her map beside the packet. "Loaded carts can use the west branch. The cross-town branch too, but the northern cut is too narrow once the wagon is heavy. If they’re moving weight, they need the broader turn."

Nyra leaned in. "The first branch has active handling marks."

"Then that’s where we start."

He activated Route Lattice.

The west freight branch sharpened first. The mapped side lane stayed usable. A northern cut ended at the same choke Saelith had already marked. Beyond the roads they actually knew, Route Lattice gave him nothing.

A shallow pull touched his Core and vanished as the Void Reserve filled it again.

"We’re moving," Severin said.

Marienne kept the packet and false note behind. Tressa and Saelith took their own working papers. Nyra closed her bag. Alicia moved to Severin’s right before he reached the door.

They crossed Greycross’s south boundary together. The Perimeter Ward brushed Severin’s awareness at the gate, giving him the passage and nothing more.

The west freight road smelled of horse sweat, old grain, and damp timber. They walked quickly, cutting through the streets Saelith had kept on her map.

They heard the cart before they saw the court.

Wooden wheels rattled hard somewhere ahead, then faded toward the public road.

Saelith stopped at the corner long enough to look at the deep tracks crossing the mouth of the lane.

"Loaded," she said. "Recently. I can’t tell you with what."

Severin stepped past her.

The staging court opened beyond a low gate. A covered cart was already disappearing beyond the far gate. Another stood inside while workers stripped papers and iron hardware from half-empty shelves.

5 people sat or knelt along the inner wall with restraints still on them.

The cart outside was already gone far enough that chasing it meant surrendering the court.

Severin didn’t turn after it.

"Alicia. Near gate. Nobody carries paper out."

"Yes, Master."

She moved.

"Tressa, the 5 by the wall."

Tressa was already looking at them. "On it."

"Saelith, tell me where those wheels actually went. Not where you want them to have gone."

"That’s usually the useful version."

Severin looked at Nyra. "Once they’re secured, tell me who actually handles routes here."

Nyra’s mouth shifted. "That I can do."

A narrow man with ink on his cuffs heard enough and ran for the outer lane.

Severin crossed the court before the man reached it.

The man got 2 steps past the shelf. Severin caught the back of his coat, turned him, and pinned him against the wall. The man gasped but stayed on his feet.

"Stay."

The man stayed.

At the near gate, a broad-shouldered man tried to slip past Alicia with a packet tucked under an arm.

"Master said no paper leaves."

The man kept moving.

Alicia stepped inside his line, caught his wrist, and took the packet before he managed another stride. He froze when she looked up at him.

"Better," she said brightly. "Now stay there."

A younger worker near the second cart raised his hands.

"I’m done. I’m not fighting anybody."

"Smart," Nyra said.

Tressa crouched in front of the captive line.

"Don’t get all of them up," she snapped when a worker reached for a restraint. "You. Back away."

The worker obeyed.

Tressa checked the first person, then shifted to the woman beside him. The woman kept her weight off a stiff leg.

"Can you feel your foot?"

"Yes."

"Good. You’re not walking on it yet."

She moved to the next captive, touched 2 fingers to the side of the man’s neck, then held a cup toward him when someone brought water.

"Slowly. If you throw it back and choke, I’m going to be annoyed."

The man managed a weak laugh and drank.

The other 3 were exhausted, sore from restraints, but able to stand when Tressa allowed it. She loosened what needed loosening and refused to let anyone hurry the process.

Severin left her to it.

Nyra walked around the 2 men, looking at their hands, clothes, and the places they’d been standing.

She pointed at the man Severin held. "He works dispatch. Ink on the inside fingers, wax on the cuff, and he ran for the lane instead of the cart."

The ink-cuffed man swallowed.

Nyra nodded at Alicia’s captive. "That man moves the loads. He knew which packet mattered enough to steal on the way out."

"Where does the empty cart return?" Severin asked the ink-cuffed man.

The man hesitated, then looked at the papers Alicia had taken. "Cross-town yard. East side of the old cooper row."

Severin glanced at the half-empty shelves. "Why are you stripping this place?"

The man’s eyes followed his. "Order changed this morning. We were told to clear fixed storage early."

"Who sent it?"

He shook his head. "Message came through the route. I don’t know the top."

The senior loader gave a tight nod. "Same. We move what they tell us. We don’t get buyer names."

Nyra watched the 2 men without interrupting.

"They’re local hands," she said. "Useful local hands. Don’t make them princes."

"I wasn’t planning to."

Severin opened the thin route ledger Alicia had recovered. 3 stamped slips sat inside it. The key ring from the clerk carried 4 fixed-site keys.

He kept those together and left everything else where it belonged.

Dense black mist spilled over his hand.

It rolled around the ledger, the 3 slips, and the ring of 4 keys, thickening until none of them remained visible. The mist folded inward and vanished.

The lot vanished into the Void Vault intact.

The court remained exactly where it was.

So did the second cart.

Tressa looked over from the wall. "I need transport before I move the woman with the leg. And I want the dehydrated man sitting, not bouncing around the back of whatever turns up."

Severin fixed his intent on Marienne and activated Command Relay.

’First west staging court. Send the household relief transport and enough hands for 5 people. Keep the secured staff separate.’

His Core dipped. The Reserve answered immediately.

Marienne’s acknowledgment returned through the established link. She’d received the order. Dispatch was underway.

Relief arrived while Saelith finished marking the court on her map. The dispatch clerk, senior loader, and younger worker were kept apart from the rescued people.

"I’m staying with these 5," she said.

"Do it."

Tressa nodded and turned back to the woman with the injured leg. The relief transport took her and the 5 toward Greycross while the secured staff remained separated from them.

Severin left the second cart where it stood under the arriving household hands. He took Alicia, Nyra, and Saelith toward the second yard on foot.

They found it half stripped and nearly empty.

No captive remained in sight. Bare tying points scarred the fixed racks. Papers had been pulled in a hurry, leaving a compact bundle jammed behind a shelf.

Saelith crouched beside the wheel marks at the loading edge.

"Heavy cart left here too." She ran her eyes along the rut, not her fingers. "Turned onto the public branch."

"Same cart?" Alicia asked.

"I can’t prove that. Same kind of load is the most I’ll give you."

Nyra picked up the abandoned paper bundle and checked the outer marks. "Dispatch paper. Messenger sleeves. Route seal. Somebody ran out of time."

"Does the seal tell you who runs the market?" Severin asked.

She looked at him. "No. It tells me somebody here liked brass."

Saelith’s mouth twitched once.

She added the second yard and the used branch to her map before Severin touched the bundle.

Inside were 6 dispatch sheets, 1 brass route seal, and 2 empty messenger sleeves.

Dense black mist rose around them.

The paper edges vanished first, then the brass, then the empty sleeves. The mist tightened and disappeared, leaving Severin’s hand empty.

He kept the second lot separate from the first inside the Vault.

Saelith stood and looked down the public road.

"The branch splits ahead. Each side can carry the load. The marks stop being useful once they mix with public traffic."

Nyra folded her arms. "If I were running this mess, I’d love anybody arriving late enough to chase wheels. Keeps them off the rooms I’m emptying."

"You think that’s what they’re doing?" Alicia asked.

"I think that’s what I’d do. I don’t know what the person in that cart thinks."

Severin looked toward the split, then turned away from it.

"We’re done here."

On the walk back, Nyra stopped at the mouth of a narrow lane beside the west cart track.

Severin recognized the direction from her description the day before.

"The paper drop?"

"Yes." Nyra glanced into the lane. "Give me a minute alone."

Alicia’s ears angled toward her. Her tail tightened once behind her coat.

Severin looked at Alicia. "Stay with me."

"Yes, Master."

He nodded to Nyra. "Go."

Nyra disappeared around the inner turn of the lane.

Severin couldn’t see the drop from the street mouth. He didn’t move closer. Saelith stayed beside the map case while Alicia remained on his right, her silver ears fixed on the lane.

Nyra returned a short while later.

Nothing was in her hands.

"Done," she said.

"What did you do?" Alicia asked.

Nyra looked at Severin instead. "Left a tell. If the drop gets used again, I want to see it before anybody else touches the place."

Severin didn’t ask for the method.

"Then nobody touches it tonight unless you call for it."

Nyra’s eyes held his for a beat. "Good."

They returned to Greycross in early evening.

Marienne had kept the recovered packet and false note separate exactly where Severin had left them. Saelith unrolled her updated map on the west records table and laid it flat in front of him.

"These 2 sites are fixed," she said. "These are the branches I can support. The split stays unresolved."

Marienne drew the map into her working space without covering the false note.

Severin looked over the marks, then at Nyra.

"Nobody checks the drop. Leave the map open. We don’t chase the split without evidence."
