Chapter 147 - 107: The Boss’s Little Perk
After watching the ride-share carrying Tao Wei and the others disappear into the traffic at the school gate, Chen Lin turned and headed back to the office.
He had just sat down at his desk, debating how to spend the rest of the day. ’Should I keep grinding away at my thesis, or should I take a well-deserved break and test the gaming performance of this top-of-the-line computer?’
Suddenly, a thought struck him. With a mental command, he summoned the system panel.
A pale blue screen materialized before him. When his eyes landed on the "Little Financial Planner" section, he couldn’t help but suck in a sharp breath, even though he had been expecting it.
[Current Net Worth: 25,363,145.06]
Over twenty-five million!
Chen Lin quickly did the math in his head.
Excluding the one million in cash that had just arrived, his net worth had still skyrocketed by a full two point three million!
Extrapolating from the 46% equity he held in the company, this meant that by closing just one deal, Yanhai’s true valuation in the system’s eyes had soared by a full five million!
Chen Lin nodded to himself. ’Looks like my previous assessment was spot on.’
The value of closing a deal was far more than just the cash deposited in the company’s account.
Brand reputation, industry influence, the credibility of a success story... a boost to these intangible assets was even more valuable than cash itself, especially for a company in its infancy.
At that thought, any lingering ideas of slacking off vanished, and a renewed sense of motivation surged within him.
He turned and looked at Shen Yan, who was quietly studying some documents nearby. "Shen Yan," he said, his voice clear and full of purpose, "contact Huanrun Pharmaceutical right now. Ask them when would be a good time for us to go and meet with them in person."
.....
.....
「August 25th, Monday. Haizhou, Jiangsu Province.」
A ride-share pulled up smoothly in front of the Huanrun Pharmaceutical Group Headquarters.
The doors opened, and Chen Lin and Shen Yan stepped out, one after the other.
Back on Friday afternoon, Chen Lin had told Huang Yiyi and Sun Yu at the office that he and Shen Yan had a business trip on Monday. They would be heading straight to the airport, leaving the company’s day-to-day operations in their hands.
Huang Yiyi was perfectly fine with this, even joking with Chen Lin that by the time he got back, she might have hired a new administrative and legal assistant.
Although they’d had to rush to the airport for an early flight and travel until it was nearly noon, Chen Lin’s spirits were exceptionally high. He even felt a little excited.
After all, this was his first trip with Shen Yan.
Especially...
Chen Lin instinctively turned his head, and as his gaze fell upon Shen Yan beside him, his eyes lit up.
Today, Shen Yan had completely shed her usual, simple high-school-student style.
She wore an elegant, cream-colored silk blouse. The top two buttons were undone, revealing a hint of fair skin that perfectly offset the blouse’s formal feel.
For her bottom half, she wore a well-tailored, black, high-waisted pencil skirt. Her long, straight legs were clad in a pair of ultra-sheer, nude pantyhose.
Her usual cool, distant, and almost otherworldly aura was now framed by this sharp business attire, creating a fascinating fusion—a look that was both professional and tantalizingly reserved, intellectual and utterly captivating.
Chen Lin was secretly thrilled. ’Nice, very nice.’
’One of the small perks of being the boss, I guess.’
Of course, Chen Lin knew perfectly well that Shen Yan had dressed this way to show how seriously she was taking this partnership.
For a newly founded company on its first business trip to meet a client, you could never go wrong with dressing formally.
The two of them walked side-by-side into the office building. A blast of cold air from the central air conditioning hit them, instantly banishing the summer heat from outside.
The lobby floors were polished to a mirror shine. Behind the reception desk, the large metal words "Huanrun Pharmaceutical" gleamed with a steady luster under the lights.
When Chen Lin gave his name and his company’s, the young receptionist’s professional smile wavered. Her eyes flickered between Chen Lin’s and Shen Yan’s strikingly young faces, but her training kicked in quickly. She recovered, picked up the phone, and announced their arrival.
A few seconds later, a young woman in a light gray skirt suit with her hair in a high ponytail walked briskly toward them from the elevators.
The woman had a cute, round face with big, bright eyes and a touch of baby fat on her cheeks, making her look like a recent college graduate.
"President Chen, Miss Shen, hello." The young woman extended her hand, her smile both warm and professional. "My name is Zhou Lele. Please, just call me Lele."
Her gaze lingered for a second on Shen Yan’s stunning business attire, a flicker of admiration in her eyes, before she quickly composed herself.
"The chairman is already waiting for you in his office. Please follow me."
Led by Zhou Lele, the two took a private elevator directly to the top floor of the building.
Chen Lin noted that the entire floor seemed to be the chairman’s exclusive domain. The hallway was silent, its walls adorned with modern art that, while incomprehensible to him, looked very impressive.
Zhou Lele led them to a heavy, solid wood door. She knocked lightly and, after a voice from inside gave permission, pushed the door open.
"Chairman, President Chen and Miss Shen are here."
As Chen Lin stepped inside, he was momentarily stunned by the sheer opulence of the office.
It felt less like an office and more like a luxurious reception lounge in the sky.
Beyond the massive floor-to-ceiling windows stretched the magnificent skyline of Haizhou’s new city district.
A massive mahogany desk, large enough to double as a ping-pong table, sat in the center of the room. Behind it, an entire wall was lined with bookshelves, crammed with hardcover books and documents.
Behind the desk sat a man in his fifties. His salt-and-pepper hair was combed meticulously.
The man wore a fine, dark-colored shirt and gold-rimmed glasses, exuding the refined, scholarly air of an academic.
Seeing them enter, he immediately rose from his chair and walked over to greet them, a warm smile on his face.
"President Chen, Miss Shen, welcome, welcome. I am Zhu Jianqing."
Just as Chen Lin was about to step forward to shake his hand and exchange pleasantries, a door to a private lounge on the side of the office was suddenly pushed open from within.
A jovial, slightly heavyset figure emerged, chuckling.
Chen Lin took a closer look and froze.
’Isn’t that...’
"You’re... Professor Gongtan?" Chen Lin asked, uncertain.
This was the very same man he had seen at the modeling competition, the dignitary who had been sitting next to Academician Liang Tianshi, chatting amiably with Director Feng Yunhai of Yanbei University.
Although they hadn’t spoken directly, Principal Chang Kai had later filled him in on the man’s background. This Professor Gongtan was one of Academician Liang’s star pupils and was now a highly respected professor in the mathematics department at a top national institution, the Huaxia University of Science and Technology.
