Chapter 140 - 103: A Business Trip Together?
Just as Chen Lin was nodding to himself in approval, Shen Yan, at his side, couldn’t wait to pick up the few sheets of densely filled draft paper. She brought them close to her eyes and began to look them over carefully.
However, less than two minutes later, she gently shook her head. Her delicate brows furrowed slightly, and a helpless, wry smile crossed her face as she placed the draft paper back on the table.
She simply couldn’t understand it.
She recognized each individual symbol, but when they were combined in a way she had never seen before to form a perfectly seamless logical structure, it was far beyond her current knowledge.
Chen Lin saw her adorable expression, a mixture of frustration and admiration, and was inwardly amused. He almost let a slick remark slip out.
However, catching a glimpse of Sun Yu out of the corner of his eye, he managed to swallow his words.
’Ahem, employees are present. I have to maintain my image as the boss.’
Just then, the crisp sound of Huang Yiyi’s high heels grew closer.
"President Chen, I’ve drafted the contract template you wanted."
She handed a printed document to Chen Lin, her efficiency impressively high.
Chen Lin took it and glanced over it, a satisfied smile on his face. ’As expected of a professional. The terms are watertight, the responsibilities and rights are clearly defined, and it’s exactly what I wanted.’
He picked up a pen from the desk and, with a flourish, filled in a number in the amount field at the end.
[Ten Thousand Yuan Exactly (¥10,000.00)]
Then, he handed the contract to Sun Yu and said, "Sun, contact the people at Era of Creation right now. Take a picture of this contract and send it to them. Tell them if they’re willing to sign and pay, they can send someone over to Jinmen. I’ll personally solve their real technical problem for them when they get here."
"Got it, President Chen!"
Although Sun Yu still had his doubts, thinking that charging ten thousand yuan for a single test question was a bit steep, he now had an almost blind faith in Chen Lin’s decisions.
Without a word, he took the contract, returned to his workstation, and started making the call.
For the moment, only Chen Lin and Shen Yan were left at his workstation.
Chen Lin turned to Shen Yan and gave her a smug arch of his eyebrows.
Shen Yan couldn’t help the corners of her mouth from twitching into a faint smile. Worried someone might see, she quickly composed herself back into her usual cool expression, but the amusement lingered in her clear eyes.
Chen Lin leaned in closer and asked in a low voice, "Alright, now it’s your turn. What kind of big client did you find for the company?"
Hearing that they were talking business, Shen Yan’s expression turned serious as well.
She placed the books she had brought with her on the desk and began to explain softly, "It’s an innovative drug R&D company called Huanrun Pharmaceutical. I looked into them, and their most pressing need is to optimize the most time-consuming and expensive stage of the new drug development process: clinical trials."
"Clinical trials?" Chen Lin was a complete novice in this area.
"Yes." Shen Yan nodded. She had clearly done her homework, as her explanation was perfectly organized. "According to my research, the world’s leading pharmaceutical giants are all using advanced statistical techniques to improve the efficiency of their clinical trials. For example, Bayesian statistical methods and adaptive clinical trial designs."
Seeing the confusion on Chen Lin’s face, she elaborated, "To put it simply, it’s about making the trial protocol more flexible. For example, you can dynamically adjust dosages or change the patient enrollment criteria during the trial based on the data that’s been collected. The ultimate goal is to get more reliable conclusions with a smaller sample size in a shorter amount of time."
At this point, a hint of regret crept into Shen Yan’s voice. "Huanrun Pharmaceutical is actually considered quite a forward-thinking company in China. They’ve already started exploring this area, but their internal research team seems to have hit a bottleneck. Progress is very slow.
"So, they’ve recently been looking for external experts who can help them in this regard, using all sorts of channels."
After listening to Shen Yan’s well-organized presentation, Chen Lin immediately got the picture.
He asked with interest, "So, does this Huanrun Pharmaceutical also have a test for me to show them what I’ve got?"
"No." Shen Yan shook her head, her clear eyes turning serious. "Their request is very direct. According to the materials, they want to have an in-person meeting with our technical lead."
"A meeting?" Chen Lin raised an eyebrow. "Are they coming to Jinmen, or are we going to them?"
Shen Yan flipped through the notebook she’d brought, pointing to a line she’d written. "They left an address and contact information. They hope we can make a trip to Haizhou."
"Haizhou?"
Hearing the name of the city, an unexpected smile involuntarily appeared on Chen Lin’s face.
’Isn’t that a city in Jiangsu Province? It’s not too far from my hometown, Jiangdu.’
That made Huanrun Pharmaceutical practically a neighbor. He quickly calculated in his head that a trip wouldn’t be a problem, since travel was so convenient these days.
A sudden thought popped into his head. He turned to Shen Yan, a mischievous smile playing on his lips, and asked, "What do you say? Interested in going on a business trip with me?"
"Huh?"
Shen Yan clearly hadn’t expected the sudden invitation. She froze for a second, her crystal-clear eyes widening slightly.
Immediately after, a faint blush crept silently up from the base of her fair ears to her cheeks.
’A business trip?’
’With him?’
’Just the two of us?’
The string of questions flashed through her mind, making her usually placid heart pound uncontrollably in her chest.
Chen Lin’s superhuman vision, enhanced by his "Little Champion" title, allowed his peripheral vision to act like a wide-angle lens, keenly catching the subtle movements on the other side of the office.
He saw Sun Yu, who was supposed to be on the phone with a client, and Huang Yiyi, who was supposed to be screening resumes, both turn their heads ever so slightly at almost the exact same moment, their gazes landing on him and Shen Yan.
Chen Lin could feel the intense flames of their gossip from dozens of feet away.
However, the instant they sensed Chen Lin’s gaze sweep over them, the two of them snapped their heads back with incredible speed, acting as if nothing had happened. One went back to saying "Hello? Hello?" into the phone, while the other furiously typed on the keyboard, as if the previous moment had been a mere illusion.
Chen Lin chuckled to himself. ’Well, I’ll be. The company has barely started, and the office gossip mill is already up and running.’
He pretended not to notice, his smiling gaze still fixed on the flustered Shen Yan before him, waiting for her answer.
Shen Yan’s head was lowered slightly, and she was silent for a few seconds.
Just as Chen Lin thought she would shyly refuse, she suddenly lifted her head, her eyes bravely meeting his. Then, in a very soft but incredibly firm voice, she let out a quiet "Mhm."
Seeing her nod, the smile on Chen Lin’s face grew even wider.
He clapped his hands in satisfaction, settling the matter. Then he said to Shen Yan, "Great, it’s settled then. But let’s not rush to schedule with them just yet. One step at a time, one project at a time. Once I’ve finished things up with Era of Creation, we’ll head to Haizhou."
"Okay." Shen Yan nodded, showing she understood.
