Chapter 66: Ambition, Selfishness
Long Ao was no fool. He certainly wasn't going to believe that something this good would just fall into his lap.
"Elder Fire Dragon, what on earth is going on?"
Just as the Fire Dragon was about to speak, a voice suddenly echoed in Long Ao's mind.
"Long Ao, you cannot know of this matter yet. In the future, when you can rely on your own strength to enter the Dragon Valley openly and with your head held high, that will be the day you vie for control of it. So for now, go back and focus on your Cultivation."
Long Ao was utterly confused. One moment, the Fire Dragon was saying he was the Valley Master; the next, that he wasn't qualified and could only vie for control of it in the future. 'What in the world is going on?'
Without dwelling on it any further, Long Ao asked, "Elder Fire Dragon, may I leave now?"
The most important thing on Long Ao's mind right now was whether or not he could leave. After all, if the Fire Dragon was determined to kill him, he wouldn't even have a chance to fight back.
"You may. Long Ao, as I said, cultivate diligently. The day you truly step into Dragon Valley will be the day you fight for control over it. And one more thing—the little one you just acquired has quite an extraordinary background."
"Elder Fire Dragon, before I leave, I'd like to ask one thing. Is the little one I just went through Fusion with actually a Giant Dragon?"
Although he wasn't too concerned about the little one's identity anymore, Long Ao still wanted to ask if it was a member of the Dragon Race before he left.
"Long Ao, I won't hide it from you. Just three days ago, I found this Dragon Egg in the Dragon Valley. I took it in out of compassion."
Long Ao glanced at the little creature already asleep in his hand, his expression softening with affection.
"Long Ao, rest assured. I can tell you unequivocally that this little one is definitely a member of our Dragon Race. I don't know why it was abandoned, but I am certain it is a Mutated Divine Dragon. Once it matures, it is bound to become an incredibly powerful being."
'A Mutated Divine Dragon?'
Long Ao didn't press further. After bidding the Fire Dragon farewell, he left the cave.
Long Ao had successfully obtained a Dragon Egg in the Dragon Valley and had, in a sense, earned the acknowledgment of a Giant Dragon. Once the little one matured, he could become a Dragon Martial Artist. Therefore, there was no point in staying any longer.
Before entering the Dragon Valley, Long Ying had told him that every disciple of the Long Family could acquire a Dragon Companion. Once you gained the acknowledgment of a Giant Dragon, you could never become a Dragon Martial Artist with another one in this lifetime—unless you died.
Perhaps it was fate that enemies always cross paths. Just as Long Ao was about to leave the Dragon Valley, he ran into Long Zhi and Long Ming.
The dynamic between the three had changed. Even though Long Zhi and Long Ming believed Long Ao had obtained a so-called Snake Egg instead of a Dragon Egg, they already treated him as an enemy. Given the chance, they wouldn't hesitate to strike.
"Long Ao, you've already lost your chance to become a Dragon Martial Artist. I'll give you a piece of advice: you'd best leave the Dragon Valley. Otherwise, you'll regret it."
"You?"
Utterly despising the pair before him, Long Ao couldn't understand it. The Dragon Valley was vast; surely there was more than one Dragon Egg. So why were Long Zhi and Long Ming so dead set on targeting him?
'In the end, it's just because they look down on me. They look down on me for coming from a minor branch family.'
"Long Ao, don't think you're invincible. I'm telling you right now, I could kill you in minutes. The only reason I haven't is because of the Patriarch. So you'd better not mess with me."
With that, Long Zhi and Long Ming turned and walked away.
Long Ming had already obtained a Fire Dragon's egg. As long as he kept it a secret, he could successfully become a Dragon Martial Artist. Long Zhi, however, had not yet found a Dragon Egg. So, the two of them wouldn't be leaving the Dragon Valley just yet—not until the passage closed a month later.
Long Ao watched them leave with cold eyes. He had been about to leave the Dragon Valley himself but changed his mind and decided to follow them. He wanted to see if they would manage to find any other Dragon Eggs.
"Second Brother, you're so lucky. You managed to get a Dragon Egg in less than an hour after we entered the Dragon Valley. I wonder if I'll get the chance to find one too. I don't need a Fire Dragon; even the lowest-ranking Giant Dragon would be enough for me."
Long Zhi was no fool. He knew that every single Giant Dragon was among the most powerful beings in Heaven and Earth. Even if he only obtained the lowest-ranking one, he could still become a Dragon Martial Artist and his status would skyrocket.
"We still have a month. Since we managed to find one Dragon Egg, I'm sure we can find a second, maybe even a third. When we return to the family with Dragon Eggs in hand, we'll be hailed as heroes."
Long Zhi couldn't care less about the family. All he wanted was to get a Dragon Egg for himself so he could become a powerful Dragon Martial Artist.
"Second Brother, what if our luck runs out and I don't find a Dragon Egg? What will I do then?"
"What else can you do? Just keep cultivating diligently. Remember, you don't have to become a Dragon Martial Artist to reach the Peak of Martial Arts."
Cursing viciously in his heart, Long Zhi's face remained impassive as he said, "Second Brother, you've obtained a Dragon Egg, so you're sure to become a Dragon Martial Artist. I wonder what would happen if outsiders, or the other branches of the Long Family, were to find out about this."
Long Ming was no fool. He knew there was a hidden meaning in Long Zhi's words. 'Is he threatening me?'
"Don't overthink it. I'll do everything I can to help you find a Dragon Egg in the coming days. If our branch of the Long Family produces two Dragon Martial Artists, we're sure to be promoted to a Third Level Long Family."
Long Zhi was still deeply worried, but there was nothing he could do. He had made a veiled threat, but he would never dare to actually act on it.
Whether it was intentional or not, Long Ming slowed his pace, allowing Long Zhi to walk ahead of him.
SCHLICK!
A soft sound. Long Zhi looked down at the Sharp Sword piercing him from behind, his face a mask of disbelief. He struggled to turn his head, staring intently at Long Ming, who was just inches away. "Second Brother... why?" he asked, his voice filled with incredulity.
His face twisted with malice, Long Ming snarled, "You son of a bitch. I was actually planning to help you find a Dragon Egg so you could become a Dragon Martial Artist too. But you bastard, you dared to threaten me? Who the hell do you think you are, threatening me?"
"Second Brother... I was just kidding... I would never dare..."
"I don't believe you. I only trust the dead. Only with you dead can the fact that I obtained a Dragon Egg be kept a complete secret. Remember, your death is for my sake. Your Second Brother is very grateful. And don't worry. It's not just you. Even if I find other Dragon Eggs, I'll destroy them. I will be the only one in our family to get a Dragon Egg and become a Dragon Martial Artist."
Long Ming's ambition was immense, and he was utterly selfish.
"I can't accept this... I really can't accept this! Long Ming, even in death, I won't let you go! I'll haunt you as a ghost!"
