Chapter 143: Seeking Help?
That evening, Zhou Fan left the Gu Building with Gu Feifei and returned to their hotel. Fan had just arrived as well.
"You're really something else. You were only gone for a little while, and you just had to go pick up a girl?" When Fan saw Zhou Fan return with Gu Feifei, he couldn't resist a taunt. "Aren't you afraid of running into enemies and getting yourself assassinated?"
"And you think I'd be any safer from an assassination attempt if I just stayed here?" Zhou Fan shot back. He wasn't one to take an insult lying down; if Fan dared to be sarcastic, he'd be sarcastic right back.
"Oh, right, Feifei. Let me make a formal introduction. This is Fan, the captain of the Wolf Fang Squad. If you ever run into any trouble in Jiang Province, you can go to him for help." Zhou Fan pulled Gu Feifei closer, then gestured toward Bai Zhi, who was sitting perfectly still on a nearby sofa like a statue. "That's Bai Zhi, my bodyguard. Don't mind her."
That one short sentence was enough to make both Fan and Bai Zhi want to kill him on the spot.
Bai Zhi was a proud person by nature. She might have been hired to protect Zhou Fan, but what was that "don't mind her" supposed to mean?
'Do bodyguards not have human rights?'
"Don't push it," Fan growled, glaring at Zhou Fan. "We don't get involved in family infighting. We don't care if one or two people die. Stop acting like we're supposed to manage every little thing for you!"
"Is that so? Well, in that case, I suspect that what happened to the Gu Family recently is related to Gu Changkong's daughter. I suspect her family has been taken over by the people backing Chu Yifeng!"
A slight smile touched Zhou Fan's lips. This was the exact response he'd been waiting for from Fan.
Seeing that Fan had no reply, Zhou Fan pulled Gu Feifei back to their room. He then took out his phone and pulled up a message Zhang Lei had sent him. It contained a list of all the current shareholders in the Gu Family Company.
"How do these people get along with your grandfather?" Zhou Fan pointed to the list and asked Gu Feifei.
"It seems that aside from Grandmaster Liang, who's the only one still supporting me, the rest didn't get along well with my grandfather. I remember they'd argue at every shareholder's meeting. This Kong Fei was always the most aggressive!" As Gu Feifei went down the list, she looked as if she was about to cry.
'How did Grandpa get on such bad terms with everyone?'
'If he'd just gotten along better with a few more people, maybe I wouldn't be getting stonewalled by Wang Liang and his faction now!'
"Kong Fei… fifteen percent of the shares. That makes him the biggest shareholder in the Gu Family besides your grandfather, right? Come on, we're going to pay him a visit for dinner."
Zhou Fan tapped Kong Fei's name on the list, then pulled Gu Feifei up and had her make the call.
At the same time, Zhou Fan also called Zhang Long from Nanjiang City. "Brother, do you have any really good, high-powered business contacts here in Jiang Province? What? You're in Jiang Province right now? That's perfect! Then I'll need you to do a brother a favor!"
After Gu Feifei made her call and got Kong Fei's agreement, Zhou Fan immediately called Chen Yao. "Little Yaoyao, are things in Nanjiang City stable now? Good, then have Han Huan come to Jiang Province right away. I have something for him to do here."
"Brother Fan, thank you. You're so good to me!" Although Gu Feifei didn't know the details of Zhou Fan's plan, she knew he was working hard for her sake.
"Good to you? Well, you can just make it up to me tonight," Zhou Fan said with a wicked grin, earning a playful tap from Gu Feifei.
The neighborhood where Kong Fei lived wasn't a gated community full of mansions, nor was it some so-called "rich man's district." It was just a regular, upscale apartment complex. For a tycoon of his stature, it was surprisingly low-key.
"Grandmaster Kong, sorry to bother you on such short notice!" After they knocked, the door was opened by Kong Fei himself—a man in his sixties, hale and hearty, with a ruddy complexion. His posture was bolt upright, and his eyebrows looked like they were about to leap off his face. He seemed to have a fiery temper.
"Come in. And this young man is?" Kong Fei glanced at Gu Feifei, then noticed Zhou Fan behind her, holding gifts in both hands.
"Hello, Sir. I'm Feifei's boyfriend. My name is Zhou Fan, but you can call me Xiaozhou." Zhou Fan was so polite, you'd think he was meeting his in-laws.
"Zhou Fan?" Kong Fei's brow furrowed. He sized Zhou Fan up carefully, then casually picked up a pack of cigarettes from the table. "Smoke?"
"I do," Zhou Fan said with a knowing grin as he pulled out his own pack. "But I'm not a big fan of these. Too mild."
Kong Fei stared at Zhou Fan for a moment, then turned his gaze to Gu Feifei. "Alright, spit it out. What does a little girl like you want from me? You usually can't stand the sight of this old man!"
"It's like this, Sir," Zhou Fan quickly interjected, placing a hand on Gu Feifei's to stop her from speaking. "Feifei was young and foolish before and misunderstood the conflict between you and her grandfather. Now that her grandfather has been confined, she has no one else to turn to for help but you."
