Chapter 111: Chen Yao's Heart in Turmoil
TAP TAP TAP!
A set of footsteps approached, growing louder. It sounded like four people, but Zhou Fan could tell there were five. The fifth person was clever, masking their steps within another's, making it seem like there were only four.
Soon, the footsteps stopped at the door, as if waiting for something.
Just then, Gu Feifei, who had been fast asleep on the sofa, seemed to sense something and suddenly woke up. She saw Zhou Fan hiding by the door, putting a finger to his lips in a shushing gesture. She nodded obediently, her wide eyes fixed on the door without blinking.
The next moment, the door opened, and a figure walked in.
The instant the person stepped inside, Zhou Fan moved...
To prevent the intruders from accidentally harming Gu Feifei, and to ensure those behind couldn't escape, Zhou Fan didn't hold back. He struck with lethal intent.
He grabbed the first person's neck with one hand and, with a SNAP, broke it. Then, he shot out his left hand, seized the shoulder of the person behind him, and kicked out.
Three seconds. In just three seconds, Zhou Fan had already dealt with three of them and was now face-to-face with the two remaining outside the door.
"Since you're here, don't even think about leaving!"
Seeing them try to run, Zhou Fan sneered. He dropped low and shot forward like a cheetah, grabbing both of their waists with his hands and slamming them onto the floor with immense force.
CRACK!
The immense force instantly broke their backs. Agonized screams echoed through the hallway.
Strangely, though, not a single door opened to see what was happening.
Zhou Fan had intended to drag the two back into the room for interrogation, but when he threw them into the living room, he discovered they had committed suicide by swallowing poison.
Zhou Fan frowned. 'I didn't expect them to be professional assassins. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been so well-prepared.'
In the past, Zhou Fan would never have been so careless as to give them the chance to take poison. But ever since that fiery red fruit had merged with his body and greatly increased his power, he'd thought these five were amateurs. He hadn't considered that they might be professional assassins.
"Thank you, Mr. Zhou!"
Gu Changkong had gotten out of bed and was leaning on his cane, his voice frail as he bowed to Zhou Fan in gratitude.
"There's no need to be so formal, sir. Just consider it repayment for the hundred-year-old Profound Spirit Grass," Zhou Fan said with a casual wave. Given his relationship with Gu Feifei, he would have helped even without the Profound Spirit Grass. He couldn't possibly have stood by and done nothing.
"It was just one Profound Spirit Grass, which at most could save a single life. How could that compare to you saving the lives of both me and my granddaughter, Mr. Zhou? You're being too modest," Gu Changkong argued.
"I implore you, Mr. Zhou, please ensure my granddaughter Feifei's safety. I am willing to hand over the entire Gu Family fortune!" Suddenly, Gu Changkong fell to his knees, his plea utterly sincere.
"Grandpa!"
Gu Feifei rushed forward to help him up, but Gu Changkong was uncharacteristically stubborn. His resolute old eyes were fixed on Zhou Fan, filled with supplication.
"Are you two planning to stay here with these dead bodies? Even if you hadn't asked, sir, I would still protect Feifei. As for your Gu Family fortune... you should worry about whether you can even hold onto it first."
Zhou Fan shot Gu Changkong a speechless glance. 'The old man is clearly using Gu Feifei to pressure me, but I don't have a good reason to refuse.'
Before leaving the house, Zhou Fan called Fan and explained the situation. Fan told them to leave first, saying he would send people to handle it. He also shared a piece of news that, at this point, was hardly a shocking revelation: aside from Gu Changkong and Gu Feifei, all thirty-plus members of the Gu Family had been slaughtered overnight.
Zhou Fan led the grandfather and granddaughter away from Shifeng Garden. Unsure of where to take them for the time being, he brought them to Divan. At least there, they would be completely safe.
"Little Yaoyao, could you help me arrange a couple of rooms?" This time, to prevent that woman Chen Yao from finding fault, Zhou Fan went straight upstairs to find her and briefly explained the situation with Gu Feifei and Gu Changkong.
"Well, well, if it isn't our President Zhou, actually coming to ask me for a favor. How rare!" Hearing that Zhou Fan was doing this for a girl, Chen Yao couldn't help but let out a wave of sarcastic, passive-aggressive remarks. Still, she took two sets of keys from her drawer and tossed them to Zhou Fan. "Seventh floor. Find them yourself."
After catching the keys, Zhou Fan didn't leave right away. Instead, a mischievous smile played on his lips as he walked over to Chen Yao's side.
"What? Is there something else?" Chen Yao looked up at Zhou Fan, confused, only to have him suddenly grab her wrists, raise them above her head, and pin her against the wall.
"What... what are you doing?" Chen Yao panicked for a moment. With her hands caught and being held in such a position, her heart began to race like a frightened deer as she watched Zhou Fan's face get closer and closer. THUMP-THUMP, THUMP-THUMP, it wouldn't stop.
