Chapter 94: What a Good Apprentice
Due to their injuries, Zhou Fan and the others chose to take a train back instead of a plane.
Lying on a bunk in the ceaselessly rattling sleeper car, Zhou Fan forced himself to calm down and focused on his cultivation.
The recent battle had made Zhou Fan all the more aware of the wondrous uses of that profound and mysterious, yet pitifully scarce, energy within his body. Not only did it continuously supply him with strength in a fight, but it also had a remarkable effect on healing his injuries.
"Go and cultivate. If you try any funny business with me again, believe me, I'll kick you right off this train." After cultivating for several hours, Zhou Fan opened his eyes to find that Xu Ruonan had, at some point, climbed onto his bunk again. He couldn't help but chide her in a low voice.
Xu Ruonan pouted but had no choice but to tiptoe back to her own bunk.
Seeing this, Fan, who was on a nearby bunk, couldn't help but laugh. But the movement pulled at his wounds, and the pain almost made him cry out.
"Still laughing? Is this what you call 'arranging more people to protect my wife'?" Zhou Fan sneered at Fan, tossing his phone to him.
Confused, Fan took the phone and glanced at it. His expression changed drastically. He snapped his head up to look at Zhou Fan. "Is this information real?"
The words had barely left his mouth when Fan's own phone buzzed. The message was almost identical to the one on Zhou Fan's phone.
"Just now, seven people snuck into the villa complex. They bypassed your Wolf Fang members. If I hadn't left a contingency plan in place, do you have any idea what could have happened?"
Zhou Fan's expression was equally grim, a murderous glint flickering in his eyes.
"That was my oversight. I never expected them to send such powerful masters this time," Fan admitted in a low voice. The men he had assigned were already some of Wolf Fang's more skilled members.
Yet the enemy had still managed to infiltrate without a sound. It was terrifying to imagine just how strong their opponents were.
"How about we discuss something?" Fan mused for a moment before looking up at Zhou Fan, a strange excitement glinting in his eyes.
Xu Ruonan and Xiaojiu curiously poked their heads down from the upper bunks, only to find the two men weren't speaking. Instead, they were typing on their phones, even using their hands to shield the screens from view.
"Leader, I'm a member of Wolf Fang too. Why are you doing this behind my back?"
"I'm your only apprentice! You won't even let *me* see!"
The two girls protested indignantly.
"Adults are talking business. Go play, kids," Zhou Fan and Fan said in unison, waving their hands dismissively as if shooing away children.
After a while, Zhou Fan and Fan finished their discussion. Both wore smiles, apparently quite satisfied with their arrangement.
"One last thing!" Suddenly, as if remembering something, Zhou Fan pointed a finger upward. "What if *they* don't agree?"
"They have no authority over Wolf Fang. In this group, besides my master, I'm the one in charge. It doesn't matter who comes knocking," Fan's tone was arrogant, but brimming with confidence.
"And what if your master doesn't agree?"
"Then I'll tell his wife he's been going out for foot massages every day."
"Wow. You're a great apprentice, aren't you?"
Xu Ruonan and Xiaojiu were completely lost, having no idea what the two were talking about. Suddenly, Xu Ruonan poked her head out again. "Master, don't worry! If you go get a foot massage, I promise I won't tell the missus!"
By the time the group returned to Nanjiang City, five days had passed since their departure, and Zhou Fan's injuries were completely healed.
Zhou Fan parted ways with Fan and Xu Ruonan. He checked the time—there were still two or three hours left in the workday—so he headed straight for Fenghua International.
"Honey..."
"Honey, you're finally back!"
Zhou Fan pushed open the door to Chu Yan's office to find her alone, engrossed in her work. He called out to her softly. After a moment of stunned surprise, Chu Yan abandoned her composure and ran to throw her arms around him.
"Hey, stop it, we're in the office!"
"You stop it. Let me have a look. I haven't been around for a few days, has it gotten any smaller?"
"Pfft, you can check when we get home after work!"
After they'd teased each other for a bit, Zhou Fan went to the sales department, since Chu Yan still had a lot of work to do.
"Ladies, I'm back!"
As was his custom, Zhou Fan leaned against the doorframe and gave a cheesy shout, instantly earning him a roomful of eye-rolls.
"Brother Fan, where have you been the last few days?" Gu Feifei immediately sidled up to him, her small hands patting him down as if checking for missing parts.
"Can't tell you!" Zhou Fan grinned smugly. His hand snaked around Gu Feifei's waist as he said with a wicked smile, "Yo, haven't seen you in a few days. Little Feifei, you've really grown up, huh!"
