Chapter 66: Yes, I'll Remember
"Huh? Brother Fan, you know this blockhead?"
Suddenly, recalling their conversation, Gu Feifei looked at Zhou Fan beside her in confusion.
"We've met, but we're not close." Zhou Fan first nodded, then shook his head. Just then, their food arrived, and he casually placed some on Gu Feifei's plate.
"I knew it! My Brother Fan is so handsome, witty, and charming. How could he possibly know a blockhead like that?" Gu Feifei said, completely ignoring He Yi's reaction. She spoke as if no one else was there, resting her head on Zhou Fan's shoulder like one half of a loving couple.
"Xiaohu, is he the Nether King from three years ago?" On the other side of the table, Gu Changkong voiced the question on his mind, then saw He Yi give a slight nod.
"But he was betrayed by his own subordinate a year ago. Everyone, including me, thought he was dead. I never expected him to be hiding in Nanjiang City. And his power… it's much weaker than before. He must have been severely injured in that battle a year ago. Otherwise, I might not have been his match just now."
He Yi spoke very softly. Both he and Gu Changkong could tell that Gu Feifei likely didn't know Zhou Fan's true identity, and Zhou Fan didn't seem to have any intention of telling her. That's why they were deliberately keeping their voices down so she wouldn't overhear.
"Your grandfather once said he thought very highly of the Nether King. And after he saved us back then… although your side paid a reward, I've personally always wanted to repay the favor, but I never had the chance. What do you think? If I were to…" Gu Changkong trailed off, looking up at He Yi as if to ask his opinion.
"Grandmaster Gu, that's not really for me to say. All I know, from my own interactions with him, is that he's the type of person who repays kindness. Given his status back then and the danger of that mission, the job was worth far more than twenty million. The only reason he did it was because my grandfather showed him kindness when he was just a child."
Although Gu Changkong hadn't said it outright, He Yi knew what he meant.
But He Yi's position was a sensitive one, and there were some things he couldn't say too directly. After a moment of consideration, he offered his opinion.
"But those two kids don't look like a real couple to me. I was originally planning to save this for my future grandson-in-law. How about it, kid? Why don't you try getting to know my granddaughter? I'll save it for you!"
Gu Changkong glanced across the table at Gu Feifei, who was acting all lovey-dovey with Zhou Fan, and whispered to He Yi.
"Grandmaster Gu, please don't joke." He Yi shook his head with a wry smile. "You know I have no interest in romance. Being with me would only hurt Feifei." His mind was singularly focused on the Martial Dao, consumed with thoughts of how to improve his strength and lead Tiger Teeth to complete its missions.
As for other matters, he didn't even concern himself with his own family's affairs. How could he possibly care about romance?
"Mr. Zhou, I have something for you!" After the meal, just as Gu Feifei was getting ready to leave with Zhou Fan, Gu Changkong took an antique wooden box from an attendant at his side. "Could we speak privately for a moment?"
"Grandpa, what are you going to talk to Brother Fan about? Why am I being excluded?" Gu Feifei, worried that her grandfather was about to say something harsh, defensively moved to shield Zhou Fan behind her, glaring at Gu Changkong with wide, unhappy eyes.
"Go wait for me by the door. Be good."
Zhou Fan ruffled Gu Feifei's hair, then glanced at the box with a faint smile and gestured for Gu Changkong to lead the way.
"Mr. Zhou, first, thank you for saving my life back then," Gu Changkong said, holding out the box. "I believe what's inside will be of use to you."
"Oh? Are you sure?" Zhou Fan didn't take the box, a faint smile on his face. "You must be able to tell that Feifei and I aren't actually a couple. In fact, I'm already married."
"That's no issue. The Gu Family is a great family. As long as you're capable enough, having three wives and four concubines is nothing. This old man has several myself!" Gu Changkong's words almost knocked Zhou Fan off his feet. 'Holy hell, does he have to be so blunt?'
"Actually, I was only joking. To be honest, if you and Feifei were really together, I wouldn't be very happy about it. My only wish is for Feifei to one day successfully take over the Gu Family and live a peaceful, safe life. It doesn't matter if her future husband is exceptional; what's crucial is that he truly loves her. This… I suppose this is my way of hoping that you will owe this old man a favor. In the future, should the Gu Family face a crisis, I hope you might be able to lend a hand, if possible."
Gu Changkong was a very smart man. He knew that when dealing with someone as clever as Zhou Fan, honesty was the only way, so he laid all his cards on the table.
"I accept the gift. And I will remember the favor."
Facing the utterly sincere Gu Changkong, Zhou Fan accepted the wooden box with both hands. He gave the old man a long, deep look and said solemnly.
Back at the company, Gu Feifei was ecstatic. She was finally free from her grandfather's nagging to find a boyfriend.
Zhou Fan, however, went straight to Chu Yan's office.
