Chapter 59: Wait for Me a Moment
An unknown amount of time passed. Zhou Fan felt an immense weight crushing him, so heavy he could barely breathe. The slightest movement sent excruciating pain through his body, as if he were about to fall apart.
He managed to force his eyes open. It was pitch-black, with only a few scattered stars twinkling in the night sky.
Struggling to lift his head, Zhou Fan rolled his eyes, speechless. A woman with disheveled hair, looking like a madwoman, was sprawled on top of him, fast asleep. Who else could it be but Chu Qianqian?
'Damn it. No wonder I can barely breathe even after passing out. Is this whole place not big enough for you?'
"You're awake? How do you feel?"
As if sensing movement beneath her, Chu Qianqian lifted her head. When she saw Zhou Fan was awake, she asked with urgent concern. Her delicate face, though smudged with dirt, was filled with excitement.
She had been awake for a long time. Even though Zhou Fan had cushioned her fall, she had still sprained her ankle. Combined with the body of Sixth Son, who had fallen to his death nearby, she hadn't dared to move an inch. Her only hope was for Zhou Fan to wake up soon.
In that moment, Zhou Fan became her only pillar of support.
"Not great. I was about to suffocate and die from you lying on top of me," Zhou Fan said, shaking his head. He tried to lift his arms but found he couldn't move them at all.
"I… I was worried you'd get cold!" Chu Qianqian said sheepishly. She quickly stood up and, with some effort, helped Zhou Fan over to where Sixth Son had fallen to his death.
With his arms injured and useless, Zhou Fan jerked his chin at the body. "Search him. Desperadoes like him usually carry some kind of medicine for injuries."
Although Chu Qianqian was repulsed by the idea of touching a corpse, she knew their situation. If she couldn't find a way for Zhou Fan to treat his injuries, they would remain in constant danger.
"Just this? It looks like a powder!"
A moment later, Chu Qianqian looked up, holding a small purple vial. She opened it, glanced inside, and spoke.
"Help me over to the river."
At the river's edge, Zhou Fan carefully sniffed the powder. Confirming it was a bone-setting medicine, he gritted his teeth against the searing pain and began sprinkling the contents of the vial onto his wounds.
"Should I help you?"
Seeing Zhou Fan struggling to apply the medicine on his own, Chu Qianqian quickly washed her face and then spoke softly.
"Are you sure? I'll probably have to take my shirt off."
"What's wrong with that? You're Xiaoyan's husband, and you got hurt like this saving me."
Chu Qianqian replied with composure. Limping over to Zhou Fan, she tried her best to remain calm as she unbuttoned his tattered shirt. The sight of the ghastly, bloody wounds covering his body made her hands tremble as she gently sprinkled the powder over them.
After a long while, Chu Qianqian finally finished. Her face was already crimson as she whispered, "You should lean against that rock and get some rest."
Fortunately, the night was dark, and Zhou Fan was too preoccupied with the shocking condition of his own body to notice Chu Qianqian's blush.
'Sixty percent!'
'My power has already recovered to sixty percent!'
'Could it be the effect of that little green pill Fan gave me?'
"What do we do now?" Chu Qianqian asked quietly, composing herself. She found a nearby rock to sit on and hugged her knees.
"Either we wait for that guy up top to wake up, or we wait for my injuries to heal a bit," Zhou Fan said calmly, glancing up at the hundred-meter-high cliff face.
After that, the two of them fell into a long silence.
RUMBLE!
Suddenly, a noise erupted from Chu Qianqian's stomach, and Zhou Fan, who was sitting beside her, almost burst out laughing.
"I… To maintain my figure, I rarely eat anything after noon. And I didn't eat at all yesterday, so… I'm hungry," Chu Qianqian said, a little embarrassed.
"Wait here a second."
Zhou Fan was speechless. 'He truly couldn't understand this habit of skipping meals to stay thin. Wouldn't it be better to just exercise more?'
He got up, walked over, and picked up the golden needles that had fallen with him. He went to the riverbank and, timing it perfectly, struck into the water.
Then, before Chu Qianqian's eyes, Zhou Fan came back holding two fish. He gathered some twigs and leaves and, as if by magic, produced a lighter from his pocket and started a fire.
"It's the best I can do. There's no seasoning, so it probably won't taste very good."
Zhou Fan frowned at the two cooked fish in his hands, then passed the less-burnt one to Chu Qianqian.
"Why would you bring a lighter but not your phone?" Chu Qianqian asked after a few bites of fish. It really didn't taste good, but it effectively curbed her hunger. She looked at Zhou Fan, perplexed.
"I did bring my phone. Left it in the car when we went into the woods. It blew up," Zhou Fan mumbled around a mouthful of fish.
"Finish up and get some rest. Once it's a little brighter, I'll lead us out along the river. I'm guessing the guy up top is hurt worse than I am."
Zhou Fan stretched his body, feeling some of his strength return. He glanced at the sky, calculating the time. 'Fan still hasn't made a sound. He must be badly hurt. It looks like I'll have to get us out of here by myself.' A pang of worry for his family hit him.
