Chapter 223: So Careless?
'Bastard!'
'Scumbag!'
'He's even hitting on Ah Lian. Does he have any humanity?'
Chen Yao glared at Zhou Fan from behind, cursing him in her heart. If she could, she would have loved to send that guy flying with a kick!
However, Chen Yao didn't notice that as Ah Lian subtly shook Zhou Fan's hand off her shoulder, both Fan's and Bai Zhi's pupils contracted instinctively.
Zhou Fan entered the conference room and saw Chen Feng and Li Mei, along with three or four other people standing behind Li Mei. They looked like ordinary bodyguards, but Zhou Fan just smiled, casually pulled over a chair, and sat down opposite Li Mei.
Chen Yao and the others also took their seats.
"Mr. Zhou, you truly are ruthless. Not only did you kill my niece, but you also killed my son. Don't you understand the principle of not involving family in our conflicts?" Seeing Zhou Fan take his seat, Li Mei's face darkened. A vicious glint appeared in her eyes as she stared daggers at him.
"Is that so? We need to talk about proof. Otherwise, considering we're not exactly friends, I'll have to sue you for slander!" Zhou Fan calmly crossed his legs, took out a cigarette and lit it, then blew a smoke ring right in Li Mei's face.
Arrogant!
Insolent!
In that moment, Zhou Fan seemed more like the villain than Li Mei did.
"Proof? Your people delivered two heads, one after the other. One belonged to my niece, Li Shufen, and the other to my son, Sun Wei. They also said they were sent by you, Mr. Zhou. Isn't that enough?" Li Mei slammed her palm on the table with a loud SMACK. If she could, she would have charged forward right then and there to eat Zhou Fan's flesh and drink his blood.
"Ma'am, do you have any common sense? Someone says who sent it, and you just believe them? Besides, forget everywhere else—just in Nanjiang City alone, how many people are there with the surname Zhou? Are you always this gullible?" Before Zhou Fan could speak, Fan also slammed his hand on the table with a SMACK, glaring back at her without yielding an inch.
"If you really are that quick to trust people, Ma'am, what if I told you I was your father? Would you believe that?" Fan already had a bone to pick with the Witch Race. Factoring in the death of his master, the Lingling Daoist, only made him despise this group more. So, his words were far from polite; it was already a show of great restraint that he wasn't cursing her entire family tree.
"Hey, hey, hey, calm down. We're civilized people. Why are you getting worked up over some crazy old hag with a screw loose? It makes us look bad!" Zhou Fan patted Fan on the shoulder. His words seemed like an attempt to mediate, but they were almost as foul as Fan's insults.
Pfft!
Once again, Chen Yao couldn't hold it in and burst out laughing. When she saw Zhou Fan turn to look at her, she quickly grabbed his arm and hid her face behind it.
"Little Yaoyao, can we work on this in the future? You can't just laugh every time something happens. You're ruining the mood!" Zhou Fan had no choice but to reach out and pat Chen Yao on the back. He then turned to Li Mei with a look of feigned embarrassment. "My apologies. My friend here is a bit sheltered. Now, where were we?"
"We were saying that engaging with people like this is beneath us," Bai Zhi chimed in coolly from the side. This time, it wasn't just Chen Yao; even Chen Feng almost lost his composure, quickly lowering his head as if he had dropped something precious on the floor.
"Hah. Mr. Zhou, I invited you, yet you brought along two juniors who are only good at running their mouths. Could it be that you're afraid of me? Afraid you won't walk out of here alive?" Li Mei took a deep breath, reining in her anger. She shot a disdainful glance at Fan and Bai Zhi before her gaze returned to Zhou Fan.
"I am indeed afraid. After all, I'm just an honest man—the kind of honest man who wouldn't even dare go to the third floor of a bathhouse." Zhou Fan nodded, his expression completely serious. He then tapped his fingers lightly on the table and looked at Li Mei with a smile. "So, why did you invite me here? Don't tell me you knew I hadn't eaten and wanted to treat me to breakfast?"
Seeing Zhou Fan so calm and composed, not the least bit angry, Li Mei slowly sat back down. She hadn't expected that after all her attempts to provoke him, he remained unfazed, while she herself had nearly lost control of her anger first.
"Here are my shares. As for the bet between us, I admit defeat." Li Mei took a file from someone behind her and tossed it onto the table in front of Zhou Fan.
"Stop laughing and help me see if there's anything wrong with this," Zhou Fan said, patting Chen Yao and handing the file to her.
"Oh, right. If I remember correctly, our bet also included the shares of those other three people, didn't it? Why are only yours here?" Zhou Fan asked, seemingly offhand, while Chen Yao was looking over the contract.
"The three of them are dead," Li Mei said.
"Oh my, how careless of them. It couldn't be that they did too many bad deeds and accidentally tripped and fell to their deaths, could it?" Zhou Fan asked with feigned surprise, which once again made Chen Yao, who was reading the file, laugh.
