Chapter 50: I Said That Out Loud To A Dragon King. Voluntarily!
The pressure lifted immediately.
Everyone around Neve exhaled at the same time... a collective sound that swept through the festival crowd.
People straightened slowly. Soren rolled his shoulder as he groaned. Cael rose from the half-kneel he had been fighting against and stood to full height.
Everyone looked at Neve. Then at Vaelthorn. Then at Neve again.
The low murmuring started immediately, spreading through every tribe present in the way wildfire spreads.
’How was he still standing?’
’The dragon king released his pressure for him. Did you see that?’
’Who is he?’
’I wonder who he is.’
Neve heard all of it. He was standing very still with his hands at his sides, and his face arranged into something that he hoped looked calmer than he felt because internally he was trembling.
He had done that out of pure reflex. Cael had been pressed down, fighting to hold his head up under the weight of Vaelthorn’s aura, and Neve had opened his mouth before his brain had contributed any input to the decision. Just ’let them go’, and somehow that had worked, and now he was standing in front of an entire festival gathering with every set of eyes on him, and his legs were not entirely steady.
’I stood up to a dragon king,’ he thought. ’I did that. I just ordered the most powerful being in the beast world, and he listened. I am still alive, so I need to stop thinking about how close that was and focus.’
He turned to Cael.
Cael was looking at him with an expression that had several components, and none of them was the usual nothing.
Neve took his arm and guided him to the chair. "Sit. Are you alright?"
"I’m fine," Cael said. He sat because Neve was still holding his arm. Then he looked at the podium. His eyes found Vaelthorn, and Vaelthorn was looking directly back at him with the specific quality of gaze that belonged to something very old and very territorial that had just watched someone touch what it considered its.
Cael looked away.
He looked at Neve instead, which was clearly the safer option.
"You should go to him," Cael said quietly.
Neve opened his mouth to complain.
"He released everyone because you asked," Cael said. "If you stay here, he’ll do it again."
Neve looked at the podium.
Vaelthorn had not moved from his chair. He was sitting exactly as he had sat down... one leg crossed, leaned back, completely still... and he was looking at Neve with the patience of something that had existed for centuries and had learned that waiting was not uncomfortable.
Neve looked at the pot of soup he needed to present.
He held up one finger to Cael and walked toward the small woods behind the leopard tribe’s position. Twenty seconds. He opened the inventory, reached in, and lifted the pot out. It was heavy and warm, and when he pulled the cover back to check it, the steam rose immediately, the soup exactly as hot as when he had stored it, the broth still moving gently.
’Oh! Time freeze,’ he thought. ’Hot stays hot, cold stays cold.’
He thought about what else could benefit from that and immediately told himself that was a thought for a different day.
He carried the pot back. Cael’s hand went immediately to the lid.
"I’ll watch it," he said. "Go. Before he decides, everyone needs to kneel again."
Neve looked at the pot. At Cael’s hand on it. He saw the understanding in Cael’s face that Neve was worried about someone getting to the soup. But he chose not to say it directly.
He let go of the pot.
"Don’t let anyone near it," he said.
"No one will touch it," Cael said.
Soren appeared at his elbow. "Neve. He’s waiting. If you’re his mate, you should go. It’ll make things easier for everyone, and it’s good for the tribe—"
"I know," Neve said.
Isabella pushed forward from somewhere in the immediate area. "There is no way that’s possible. That mark has to be fake. The dragon king would never..." she started.
"Neve is the dragon king’s mate," Cael said flatly.
"He’s a man—"
"Neve is the dragon king’s mate," Cael said again, the same, like he was simply going to keep saying the factual thing until the other words stopped being said around it.
Isabella looked like she had more to say. A lot more. She was organising it, Neve could see it — the argument building behind her eyes, the next point, the next point after that.
"Come."
One word came from the podium.
It landed on the conversation the way a stone landed on water — everything around it went still immediately. Isabella’s mouth closed. The people who had been murmuring nearby went quiet. Even the general festival noise dropped a level in the immediate area.
Neve looked at the podium.
Vaelthorn had not changed position. He had not raised his voice. He had just said one word, from that distance, and it had cut through everything around it like the word had weight.
Neve thought briefly about the fact that this man had spoken quite a bit more than one word when Neve had been half-delirious outside the palace in the trade city. He had whispered things against his ear and even asked lewd questions. Maybe he was shy in public.
He shook that thought off because it was not helping.
He started walking.
Every step toward the podium was a step through awareness of being watched. He could feel it from all sides — leopard tribe, tiger tribe, rabbit tribe, wolf tribe, eagle tribe, every gathered group tracking his movement from their positions. He kept his eyes forward.
He reached the podium steps.
Vaelthorn’s eyes had followed him the entire way. Up close... closer than he had been when Vaelthorn landed... he was different from the impression of the festival space. Still tall. Still, the kind of presence suggested that the room should be larger. But there was something in his face that Neve hadn’t been able to see from the leopard tribe table.
He was looking at Neve the way someone looked at something they had been waiting for.
Neve climbed the last step.
Vaelthorn smiled.
The sound that moved through the festival crowd at the sight of it was involuntary.
He reached forward and took Neve’s hand. His grip was warm and deliberately gentle.
He turned Neve’s hand over and pressed his mouth to the back of it, eyes up, looking at Neve the entire time.
The crowd erupted.
Not in the angry way. In the ’Did you see that?’ way. In the ’What is happening?’ way. In the ’The dragon king just kissed someone’s hand at the winter festival in front of every tribe!’ way.
The system appeared in front of Neve’s face, polite and perfectly timed.
{Mission Complete: Be Recognised by the Dragon King.}
{Reward: Beast Language — Advanced Upgrade. All dialects, historical and current, are now accessible.}
Neve read it and filed it. Somewhere in the crowd, Isabella was processing whatever she was processing. He would deal with that later.
Vaelthorn pulled Neve closer.
Not aggressively. Just closer toward himself, wanting to keep Neve near. He guided Neve sideways and then down, and Neve found himself sitting on Vaelthorn’s lap with the specific shock of someone who had understood intellectually that this was a possible outcome of walking up to the podium and had not fully prepared for it actually happening.
He settled and felt something beneath him that was very much not the chair.
He looked forward at the festival crowd and kept his face completely still. He could feel it pulsing with life.
’Don’t think about it,’ he told himself. ’It’s a natural physiological response. This is a beast world. This is normal. Don’t think—’
He shifted slightly to find a better position. That did not help.
Vaelthorn’s thumb touched the side of his neck, deliberately tracing the bond mark there, the way someone touched something they recognised as theirs.
"The mark is intact," he said. His voice was low enough that it didn’t carry beyond the podium. "But it’s not complete."
"What do you mean?" Neve asked.
Vaelthorn tilted his head toward the leopard tribe table. Toward Cael, who was watching them from his seat with an expression that was doing significant work to stay neutral and not fully succeeding.
"He completed the bond with you," Vaelthorn said.
Neve immediately understood.
Cael had mated with him. They had bonded fully. The mark on Neve’s wrist and the matching one on Cael’s wrist — that was a complete bond. Two sides of it are closed.
Vaelthorn had marked him. But they hadn’t completed it. One side only. The bond was there, but it was open, unfinished, like a door with only one hinge.
Neve sat with that understanding for a moment.
Then he made the mistake of thinking about what completing it with Vaelthorn would mean. The hard thing pulsing beneath him would be buried deep inside his body.
His face went warm immediately. He was not a person who blushed easily. But the specific combination of what he was sitting on and what his brain had just produced as an image was apparently enough.
"Are you thinking about it?" Vaelthorn asked.
His voice was still low and private. The festival was noisy and crowded around them, but the podium was elevated and separate, and nobody could hear this specific conversation.
There was something almost amused in the question.
Neve looked straight into Vaelthorn’s eyes.
"Yes," he said.
He had not intended to say that, but it completely came out anyway, honestly and directly. He said it so shamelessly, like someone whose filter had temporarily stopped working.
Vaelthorn looked at him.
Something happened in his expression that was quiet and significant and difficult to name. Then he grinned.
