Session 42 – Save that cute blonde! She’s my future-wife

Hannah

Cassandra put her fingers to her ear. "Bethul'Dyr, we need you. Help Gregorius pack up camp." She looked to me. "Alright, let's go save that girl."

We took off at a trot, Gabriella vanishing to scout ahead. "I really hope we're not too late. I don't know what I'll do if something we can't fix has already happened." I blew out a heavy sigh. "I should have kept a better eye on her." My hair flipped side to side as I shook my head in frustration.

Unencumbered by heavy armor, my infernal bestie easily kept pace with me as we moved through trees and underbrush, the sounds of the forest pressing in all around us.

She looked sideways at me without breaking her stride. "You seem particularly worked up over this one."

I huffed. "I told you what my goddess said. This is my holy mission."

Cass rolled her eyes. "You've had holy missions before, but not like this. You're all hot and bothered."

A low-hanging branch whipped me in the face and I swallowed a swear. "Well, if you must know, my Light told me that Alexis is my destined love."

Running all but forgotten, Cassandra stumbled and it took me several seconds to realize she had stopped short. I paused and turned back to her. "Wow.. that's so awkward." In several long strides, she caught up with me and we set off once more.

"How so?"

She lazily lifted a hand and a tree disintegrated from our path under a beam of dark energy. "I mean.. because you're straight?"

It was my turn to stumble and stand staring. "No, I'm not?"

Cassandra stopped and turned back to me with hands on hips. "Um, yes you are?"

I ran my hands through my hair. "Why would you say that? I like girls!"

My infernal bestie looked as confused as I felt. "Because.. you told me you were?"

"When did I do that? I like girls!" My agitation and embarrassment were both boiling over like a cooking pot left on the campfire too long.

"Hey idiots." Gabbi appeared out of the forest. "Standing still is the opposite of moving." She crossed her arms impatiently.

"Babe! Go away. We're having a serious discussion. It's about girl things." Cass made shooing motions at her girlfriend.

"Girl things? I'm out. Hurry up your yapping." Gabriella spun on her heel and jogged off the way she had appeared from.

Cassandra shook her head with a exasperated chuckle. "Anyway. You told me you were straight years ago. I think it was a few months after the three of us started adventuring?" Her eyes drifted off, lost in memories from five years ago.

Oh! Oh Hells. My cheeks flushed with real embarrassment and I shifted onto my back foot. "I completely forgot about that. Whoops." I gasped. "Wait! You told her, didn't you?! That's why she got so weird."

"I thought you were straight!" Cassandra whined and stamped her feet.

"I'm gay!" We both descended into giggling.

My bestie composed herself and gasped for breath. "Well, I know that now. I was trying to help you out! I tried to let her down easy to save you an awkward moment. But wait, why did you tell me that you were straight?"

I rolled my eyes. "For the same reason! You and I were getting really close, but then my goddess told me that while we would be good together for a time, I had a destined love and she wasn't you. So, I figured the best way to smooth things over was just to tell you I was straight. You and Gabriella make a great couple anyway."

Cass heaved a sigh as we both resumed jogging and then looked over at me with a wide grin. "So you've got the hots for her, yeah? I'm so mad! I could have been teasing you about every cute girl we met."

My cheeks colored and I looked away from her intense stare. "Yeah, I do. I just hope I'm not too late. She seemed really taken by that succubus, Paz."

"Pffff!" My bestie made a dismissive gesture with her hand. "We'll destroy her! No demon girl can hold a candle to Hannah Yorth, chosen champion of the goddess of Life Above!"

I chuckled and shook my head. "Let us hope that is true."

A few moments later, reality split open. Our voidling wizard stepped through with our orc monk in tow.

Bethul'Dyr looked around, eyes glowing and cloak billowing dramatically in the non-existent wind. "We have stored the wagon and horses. They would be poorly suited to this terrain."

Gregorius flexed his muscular arms. "Never fear ladies, I'm here now. Please save all swooning for after the quest. Although.." He winked down at me. "I'm sure we could find some time to squeeze in some exercise first." He wagged his eyebrows up and down.

He grunted and gasped for air as Cassandra smacked him across the stomach. "Keep it in your pants, lady-killer. She's both too good for you and has been secretly lesbian this whole time."

"It was not a secret, I just forgot I said otherwise." I crossed my arms and harrumphed.

Falling to his knees, Gregorius let loose a melodramatic bellow and threw his hands up at the unjust gods. "No! The Sapphists claim another one! Soon, there will be no more women for me."

I smacked him on the back of the head. "If you are quite done with your tantrum, we have slavers to deal with."

"Oh! I love squashing slavers." Gregorius popped up to his feet and followed after us, whistling a jaunty tune. "You never have to feel bad about pounding a slaver."

We made good time walking through the night and arrived at the camp by first light. It was in chaos with people running around everywhere with some kind of excitement going on.

Hand on my holy symbol, I touched a finger to my throat and my voice carried high and clear across the slaver camp. "Attention scum, you are instructed to collect your arms and don your armor. And then form an orderly line to be dealt with at our leisure."

Gabbi pulled out a sword and her lucky dagger, the gleeful look in her eye having returned after an absence of some weeks. She turned to Gregorius who was very nearly bouncing with zealous joy. "Double or nothing?"

He barked a laugh and tightened his gauntlets. "Looking to get embarrassed again, Elf? Fine by me. I could use a new bedroll, and it will be all the softer, bought with your gold."

They both crouched into runner positions and looked to Bethul'Dyr. The wizard counted to three before firing a sparkling orb into the air. Gabriella and Gregorius took off like bats out of the Hells and carved through the slaver camp like a hot knife in fresh butter.

The warning ultimately made no difference, but we're civilized adventurers and we don't slaughter unarmed men, even slavers.

Bethul'Dyr conjured a table adorned with tea pot, cups, and plates of pastries. The three of us had a snack while the fighter and monk did their thing.

Eventually, the camp fell silent. They both returned drenched in blood. Gabriella pulling a young man behind her. She smirked over at Gregorius. "Twenty."

He growled and looked down at the man she was dragging by the collar. "Nineteen." The orc kicked dirt in frustration, pulling six cobalt coins out of his purse and tossing them to Gabriella.

The tall elf unceremoniously dumped the man she had been dragging onto the ground in front of us. He was shaking and begging for his mother. "This is the only one left. He had the look of someone with at least some intelligence, so I figured you'd want to suck his brain out."

Turning several shades paler, the man turned to me and bowed nervously. "My Lady, I am called Frederick. May I be of some service? Preferably without any sucking involved."

I stood tall over him and smacked my warhammer against my palm. "Sexy blonde with red skin. Horns, tail, blue eyes. Ample breasts and an ass you could bounce a gold coin off." I was in the middle of miming ample breasts when Cassandra snickered at me. My cheeks burned and I glared at her.

"Oh, yes! She was here with the other one. They escaped and took all the other slaves with them. I think they might have gone east? Towards Arcadia."

The other one? Demon bitch is here! This means war!
