Chapter 488 486: Let Me Do It
Liao Boguang briskly walked over to Mu Lin, incredibly excited.
"Divine Doctor Mu! I can't believe you're here! I was just about to head to Anhua to find you this afternoon! I even have Zhao Yang's number saved."
Mu Lin smiled at Liao Boguang. "Elder Liao, what a coincidence. We meet again."
Elder Liao laughed heartily. "It really is! I never expected to run into you here. I have a favor to ask you. Let's go to the dean's office and discuss it in detail!"
But Mu Lin shook his head. "Actually, I'm dealing with a rather tricky situation myself, and I was hoping you could help me, Elder Liao."
Elder Liao said, "Whatever you need, just say the word. I'll be happy to help."
Mu Lin explained, "My friend's parents are seriously injured and in the intensive care unit. Since I don't have a medical license, I can't treat them. Elder Liao, could I trouble you to handle it?"
Liao Boguang thought Mu Lin must be joking. He replied with a self-deprecating chuckle, "Divine Doctor Mu, you can't be serious. With you here, why would they need me? Why don't you just treat them yourself and be done with it?"
Xu Tianming and Mo Cangsong, standing behind them, were stunned. To think Elder Liao himself would say something like that!
Liu Guangyuan, who was following closely behind Elder Liao, was also dumbfounded.
'So the young man Liao Boguang was talking about... was him!'
The other doctors, however, were just baffled. 'He's so young, what kind of skill could he possibly have? Liao Boguang has to be joking!'
But Liu Guangyuan didn't find it the least bit funny. He only felt a growing sense of dread.
'This was the man who had earned Liao Boguang's repeated praise, someone he considered an equal to the three great masters. And I was the one who refused to let him into the ICU.'
'If I'd just let Mu Lin into the ICU, Xu Tianming's parents might have already been getting their discharge papers by now.'
Chen Bai quickly composed himself, put on a placid smile, and walked up to Mu Lin.
"Greetings, Divine Doctor Mu! I've heard so much about you. I'm Chen Bai, the dean of the City Hospital. I've long been familiar with your name, but I never would have believed you were this impressive until I heard it from Elder Liao himself!"
Mu Lin was equally polite. "It's a pleasure, Dean Chen. I'm Mu Lin. The way you run this hospital so efficiently is an example for me to learn from."
Chen Bai was clearly pleased and chuckled.
"The old saying is true: heroes emerge from the young. For you, Divine Doctor Mu, to have earned Elder Liao's approval... it's like a slap in the face for the rest of us! We spend years toiling at our studies, taking certification exams, then pursuing even more advanced degrees. It's an unbelievably tough path, and yet, our medical skills still can't compare to yours! It feels like we've wasted our lives."
Mu Lin chuckled. "You shouldn't listen to Elder Liao's exaggerations. I'm not that capable."
"The credit really belongs to the patients. I didn't do all that much."
Chen Bai saw that Mu Lin was very approachable and not at all aloof. It was as refreshing as a spring breeze, and his favorable impression of the young man grew immensely.
The academic leaders he'd met in the past were all arrogant and would barely give anyone the time of day.
But Mu Lin was different; you couldn't detect a hint of arrogance on him.
Liao Boguang pointed at Mu Lin and said, "Dean Chen, you better work hard. Divine Doctor Mu's skills are formidable! If you could get him to join your hospital, it won't be long before Di Yang City Hospital really takes off. You'd be able to compete with the hospitals of those other old masters, and you might even easily surpass them!"
'Isn't Liao Boguang laying it on a little thick?' Chen Bai wondered. 'Does Mu Lin really have that kind of ability? If he does, then I really need to take this seriously.'
Liao Boguang turned to Mu Lin. "Divine Doctor Mu, where are your friend's parents? Let's go have a look. I'd like to observe and learn from your techniques, if that's all right."
Mu Lin smiled. "Of course, that's no problem at all. I'd welcome your help, Divine Doctor Liao."
"They're in the intensive care unit. Follow me!"
Mu Lin turned, but Xu Tianming cut in anxiously, "I'll lead the way! Everyone, this way, quickly!"
With that, Xu Tianming broke into a jog, heading in the direction of the ICU.
Mu Lin had no trouble keeping up, following closely behind him.
Chen Bai, however, was miserable. He wasn't very fit, and running was pure agony.
In the end, it all came down to a lack of exercise.
"I'm going too!" Chen Bai called out. He turned to the doctors behind him. "Who is the attending physician for that couple?"
Liu Guangyuan had no choice but to raise his hand. "Dean, that would be me." He felt a sense of utter despair. 'If Dean Chen finds out I'm the one who blocked Mu Lin from entering the ICU, I'm finished.'
'Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Whatever happens, happens.'
Chen Bai glanced at Liu Guangyuan but didn't say anything more on the matter. "Guangyuan, you come with me. The rest of you are dismissed."
Hearing this, the other doctors were clearly reluctant to leave. They were still extremely curious about Mu Lin's skills.
They were dying to know what kind of person could earn such endless praise from Liao Boguang.
They couldn't help but shoot envious glances at Liu Guangyuan. He just gave a bitter smile. They had no idea what this really meant, or the immense risk he was shouldering all by himself.
Liu Guangyuan looked as if he were on his way to a funeral, his expression impossibly grim.
Chen Bai shot him a glare. "What's wrong with you? Why the long face?"
Liu Guangyuan quickly forced himself to look more energetic. "Just been reading a lot lately," he said, trying to sound upbeat. "It's completely worn me out."
Since he put it that way, Chen Bai had no choice but to accept the explanation.
Liu Guangyuan didn't usually stand out, so Chen Bai wasn't familiar with his usual disposition.
'Whatever,' he thought. 'Let him be.'
The group arrived at the intensive care unit. The patterns and numbers on the monitors were beeping steadily, indicating that the couple was currently stable.
Liao Boguang went inside and examined them carefully. His expression grew grave. "Was this a car accident? These injuries are severe."
"I could probably bring them back to consciousness, but the rest of their lives would be bleak. It would be a fate worse than death."
Xu Tianming's blood ran cold when he heard this, and he began to tremble. What did that mean for his parents?
'Are their lives just... ruined?' There was no way Xu Tianming could accept this reality.
'So should I still let Liao Boguang treat them?'
Mu Lin spoke up. "Fortunately, Doctor Liu had the patients' best interests at heart and performed some very skillful interventions. Although the two patients are in a difficult situation, their conditions didn't rapidly deteriorate, which has bought us a significant amount of time for treatment."
Liu Guangyuan's heart warmed at his words. He had been certain that after the way he'd treated Mu Lin, Mu Lin would come after him with a vengeance.
But he hadn't. On the contrary, he was even speaking up for him.
'With Mu Lin saying this, Dean Chen would have to give me some kind of reward, if only to look good in front of Elder Liao.'
Liu Guangyuan said, "I didn't do anything special, just followed standard procedure. I'm ashamed that my skills weren't enough to help the patients recover."
But Dean Chen just laughed. "Elder Liao, this is Director Liu. He's a talent I went to great lengths to recruit—a graduate from a top university with experience overseas. He has a very bright future ahead of him!"
Liao Boguang laughed heartily. "Dean Chen, you certainly have a knack for cultivating talent! I hope to see many more outstanding individuals like him emerge in Da Xia's medical community!"
After that round of mutual flattery, with everyone in good spirits, Liao Boguang looked carefully at Mu Lin and asked, "Divine Doctor Mu, will you do the honors, or shall I?"
He was showing Mu Lin great respect by making a point to ask. In his view, just keeping these two patients stable was a great achievement, given the severity of their injuries.
Even if he used his own methods to forcibly awaken them, it would only buy them a little more time; it wouldn't change the fundamental prognosis.
To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always.
The hospital had already exhausted every possibility. The only thing left to do was offer what little comfort they could and help the patients pass on peacefully.
But Mu Lin said, "Allow me."
He took out a pen and paper, wrote out a prescription, and asked Liao Boguang to have it filled.
Dean Chen's temples throbbed as he watched. 'How can he ask Elder Liao to run an errand like filling a prescription?'
'It's so disrespectful!'
He was about to call another doctor in to handle it, but Liao Boguang had already snatched the prescription. "Let's go."
He understood perfectly. Powerful individuals always have secrets they don't want others to witness.
It could be the very foundation of their abilities, or perhaps some great secret.
As long as the patients could be healed, what did a small thing like this matter?
Liao Boguang led everyone out and even closed the door behind him, leaving Mu Lin in a completely quiet environment to work his magic.
The effect was perfect.
