Demon Slayer: Breath of Desire

Chapter 275: Our Infinity Castle

"What kind of joke is this?!"

Sanemi, one foot propped against a tree, stared with uneasy eyes at the eyes covering the ground.

Of those present, setting Yushiro aside, the one most affected was Sanemi.

The first time he saw Marcus, he’d been so unnerved by this very ability that he couldn’t even bring out seventy percent of his strength before ending up flat on the ground.

But at that moment it had only been a single pair of eyes.

Now, gazing at the tens of thousands of eyes carpeting the earth, an absurd thought struck him. ’Is Muzan really this terrifying?’

If...

If all these eyes stared at him at the same time... wouldn’t he end up torn to pieces?

While everyone was taking in the sheer number of eyes, a groan of pain from Marcus drew all their attention.

"Ugh...!"

The man who’d been overflowing with euphoria clutched his head with both hands and dropped to his knees.

He was trembling from head to toe, breathing hard.

"My lord?!"

"Marcus?!"

"Senpai?!"

Hakuji was the quickest: he leapt to Nakime’s side and seized her by the neck.

"Talk! What did you do to him?!"

"Hakuji, stop!"

Marcus roared in the midst of his agony.

Tamayo looked at the ground packed with eyes in distress, not daring to take a single step for fear of stepping on the creatures.

"Nakime, what’s happening?"

Nakime ignored Hakuji’s hand at her neck and sighed at the sight of the multitude of eyes.

"My lord, withdraw these eyes. Your brain can’t process this much visual information all at once."

In fact, Marcus was already doing so.

The eyeballs on the ground had already begun dispersing in great numbers the moment he stopped Hakuji.

Only when five or six hundred remained did he let out a long sigh of relief.

Seeing Shinobu and Kanao gripping his wrists, Marcus gave a bitter smile.

"I’m better now. I got carried away."

"Marcus! Waa...! You scared me!"

Seeing Nezuko crying against his chest, Marcus wiped away her tears. "There, there, don’t cry. See? I’m fine now."

Ume was scowling with rage, keeping her sashes coiled around Nakime’s neck.

"What the hell is going on? You didn’t even end up like this against Muzan."

Hakuji behaved much better.

After all, he’d never once disobeyed Marcus’s orders.

But even so, he kept his eyes on Nakime to keep her from having some plan B to escape.

Marcus waved his hand to stop Ume.

"It was a misunderstanding. It was my own fault."

"What kind of thing could leave you like that?!" Ume protested, still furious.

"It’s just a simple problem..." Marcus sighed and looked at Nakime. "Have you ever experienced something like this?"

She nodded. "Yes. At most I could only control a few dozen eyes at a time. If I tried for more, the same thing happened to me as to you."

"A few dozen?" Marcus furrowed his brow.

That number made no sense.

He remembered that in the canon, while the figure Nakime controlled wasn’t outrageous, it at least exceeded a thousand.

But Nakime’s next words cleared up his confusion.

"To control more, you need to link with Infinity Castle. Its power multiplies the number of eyes fiftyfold."

"So that was it..."

"Brat, what are you two talking about?" Urokodaki asked, confused.

So Marcus stood up and explained the situation.

Nakime’s power didn’t just create Infinity Castle; it also had, as a secondary ability, the generation of those eyeballs.

They served to keep watch on the outside and, through their vision, to drag people inside.

Every ability had a limit: the user’s mental capacity to process images.

The original Nakime handled a few dozen on her own, and linked to the castle she reached several thousand.

Marcus surpassed that baseline tenfold, but withstanding tens of thousands of viewpoints at once proved impossible.

On top of that, the eyes brought an added surprise: they fused his own faculties.

Originally, he’d thought he might be able to combine abilities after devouring Muzan... Unexpectedly, Nakime’s eyeballs directly fused all of his abilities: Koketsu Arrows, Divine Speed, and Exchange.

This was the mother of all surprises!

But the mental strain was brutal.

Had it not been for his vampire regeneration, the recklessness would have cost him dearly.

"Master, isn’t this ability... a little too dangerous?"

Ivy, too, had been scared out of her wits a moment ago and still felt a lingering dread.

"Don’t worry, I won’t be that reckless again." Marcus smiled. "Besides, once we get back to Asakusa, my physical abilities will level up..."

"Physical capacity and mental processing capacity are different things," Shinobu cut in, furrowing her brow. "You’ll have to build them up little by little."

"All right, whatever you say..." Marcus replied, just to reassure them.

Regardless of whether he’d actually do it or not, he at least had to put them at ease.

"Then let’s head back and give it a try now."

"Head back already?" Pearl asked, confused. "You still haven’t tested the Infinity Castle ability, have you?"

"That’s right, Marcus." Tamayo chimed in as well, visibly anxious. "We came all this way specifically for the transfer into Infinity Castle, so maybe we should test it before we go back."

"...Since you all want to see it, let’s take a look."

Snap

Marcus snapped his fingers.

Thump!

An enormous wooden door, four times bigger than Nakime’s, opened up beneath everyone’s feet.

Below was a platform waiting for them.

The platform began to descend, and Marcus spread his arms wide.

"Welcome to our Infinity Castle."
