The first thing Adrian learned about building a machine was that buying one was considerably easier.
By eight in the morning, Calder House looked less like the home of a billionaire and more like an engineering headquarters that had outgrown itself overnight. Three vans had arrived before sunrise. Engineers from Northbridge were unloading crated equipment onto the loading dock. A materials team from Atlantic had brought samples of specialised alloys, laid out across a folding table like evidence in a trial nobody had scheduled. Two German engineers stood over the original lattice suspension unit — the actual component Adrian had carried out of Thomas Sterling’s workshop three weeks earlier, wrapped in protective foam and now sitting on a bench under bright work lights — arguing in rapid technical shorthand about the specifications of the electromagnetic coils.
That detail mattered more than anyone in the room realised yet. This wasn’t a reconstruction built purely from Thomas’s diagrams. It was the original unit itself, the one that had hung suspended in its magnetic field for fifty years in a sealed workshop beneath an Oxfordshire estate, now disassembled on a bench in East London while a team of engineers tried to understand exactly what a man working alone in the 1970s had actually built.
Daniel stood in the middle of it all with a phone against his ear.
"No, don’t send the full shipment yet. We haven’t confirmed the storage conditions." He listened for a moment, jaw tightening slightly. "Because if you send it and the humidity control fails, we’ll have a very expensive pile of useless material." He ended the call as Adrian approached.
"You’ve created a monster," he said.
"I thought you liked efficiency."
"I like efficiency. This is chaos wearing an expensive suit." He handed over a tablet. "There’s one real problem underneath all of it. The facility’s already reaching its practical limit. Not enough floor space for full-scale testing. The power supply here was never built for industrial electromagnetic equipment running continuously. The cooling system can support short prototype cycles but not sustained development. And the machine shop downstairs can modify existing components, but it can’t manufacture the precision parts Miriam actually needs for the coil redesign."
"How long to build a proper facility?"
"Six months, if we move aggressively."
"Too long."
"Three, if we cut corners we shouldn’t cut."
"Still too long." Adrian looked out at the improvised chaos filling what used to be a conference floor. "We don’t need to build a factory from nothing. We need a building we can convert immediately."
Daniel frowned. "That’s not the same thing."
"No. It’s faster."

Two hours later, Adrian stood inside an abandoned manufacturing complex in East London.
It had once housed a company producing industrial electrical equipment, and had sat mostly unused for nearly a decade after a redevelopment scheme collapsed under planning disputes, financing problems, and a construction partnership that had dissolved somewhere in the middle of the second phase. The result was a building frozen halfway between demolition and completion — vast, half-finished, and entirely without sentiment attached to it.
He crossed the concrete floor slowly, taking in the scale of it. High ceilings. Outdated but salvageable electrical infrastructure running along the walls in thick conduit. Loading bays large enough for heavy freight. Reinforced flooring rated for equipment far beyond what a normal office building could support. A separate section clearly intended for testing or quality control, and a smaller wing that could become office and research space without much modification.
Miriam followed him in, her footsteps echoing in the empty space.
"You want this?"
"I want it tomorrow."
"That’s not how property works, Adrian."
"How much?" he asked Daniel, who was already on the phone with the agent.
"Thirty-one million. The owner wants thirty-four."
"Offer thirty."
"Already did."
"Accepted?"
"He’s thinking about it."
"Give him until lunch."
Miriam wandered toward the old electrical room, running a hand along a junction box that hadn’t been touched in years. "You’re going to spend tens of millions converting this place, and then probably another hundred on equipment after that."
"Eventually, yes."
"Why not just rent an existing research facility instead? There are places in Cambridge that would take you in next week."
"Because I don’t want to leave when the lease ends," he said, and something in the flatness of the answer made her smile despite herself.
He walked further into the building, past the loading bays and into what would become the main floor, and found himself thinking about the fact that this place had no history attached to his family at all. No hidden files behind a false wall. No connection to Thomas, no old signatures buried in property records going back fifty years, no observers who’d spent decades protecting its secrets. It would belong entirely to him — his decision, his risk, his name on the deed rather than a trust with conditions attached that had been written before he was born.
That, more than the floor space or the power supply, was what he actually wanted from it.

By noon the property was under contract. By one, Adrian had split his engineering team in two.
One group would continue the S-71-04 redesign directly — the original unit, still on its bench, still being carefully documented before a single new component was fitted to it. The other would work exclusively on manufacturing infrastructure, building the systems needed to eventually produce components at scale rather than one painstaking prototype at a time. It was a deliberate separation. He didn’t want another situation where a team designed something brilliant with no realistic way to produce it beyond a single hand-built unit — which was, he understood now, exactly the trap Thomas himself had fallen into, alone in a workshop with no company behind him large enough to industrialise what he’d discovered.
He called the new site Sterling Industrial Works.
Not the same name as the great-grandfather’s original holding company, which remained Sterling Industrial Holdings, still operating under its own board and its own history in Sheffield. He’d been careful about that distinction once Daniel pointed out how easily the two would blur together in the press and in his own paperwork. This one was new. His. A working name for a working building, chosen precisely because there was nothing clever about it — a factory, a real one, with people walking through it every morning, machines running, components being tested, and eventually products leaving the loading bay under their own steam. Something that could survive without a billionaire standing over it indefinitely, which was the entire point.
Miriam found him in his temporary office that afternoon, slightly out of breath.

"Already? You should have slept."
She ignored that entirely and set a small, unremarkable-looking electronic module on his desk. "The original coil geometry was inefficient — elegant for what Thomas had access to in 1973, but nowhere near what we can build now. "That’s significant. What about total run time?"
"Still poor." She tapped the module. "We also redesigned the control loop completely. Modern digital control architecture replacing whatever analogue system he was working with by hand."
"You’ve tested it on the original unit?"
"We have. It worked. Twenty-seven seconds of stable suspension — our record, by almost four times what we managed last week."
"What’s stopping us from getting to five minutes?"
"Heat. The coil housing wasn’t designed for sustained current at the levels we’re now running through it. We’re working on cooling now." At the door, she paused. "The machine isn’t useful yet. But we’re getting closer to understanding what he actually built, rather than just what he wrote down."
"That’s enough for today," Adrian said.

Daniel came in without knocking, which had become its own kind of warning. "Meridian’s made an offer for Atlantic Industrial Materials. Four hundred and ten million."
"Atlantic’s worth nowhere near that."
"Not normally. It’s the alloy supply agreement they’re after, not the current revenue base."
"What did Atlantic say?"
"Haven’t accepted. Don’t want to sell, from what our contact there tells me." He set another document on the desk. "But that’s not the only problem. Three other materials companies have received acquisition approaches this week. One in Britain, one in Germany, one in France. Different ownership structures, different product lines, no obvious relationship between them on paper."
"Same pattern."
"Same pattern."
Meridian wasn’t trying to destroy Sterling Industrial Works directly — that would have been visible and actionable. They were trying to make it dependent, moving across the supply chain one link at a time, quietly acquiring the exact companies that a rapidly scaling industrial operation would eventually need. For months, Meridian had been a name attached to a person, Helena Mercer, applying pressure at scattered points. Now it was becoming something closer to a coherent strategy, and strategies were harder to disrupt than isolated moves.
"Get me their owners," Adrian said. "All of them. We’re going to offer something Meridian can’t."
"What?"
"Customers. Long-term contracts. Meridian’s offering them money to disappear into an acquisition and lose whatever independence they’ve built. We’ll offer predictable demand without taking any control at all."
"And if Meridian raises the offer?"
"Then they decide for themselves what matters more to them."
"You’re not going to outbid?"
"No. I don’t want companies that stay with us only because we paid the most for their compliance. I want companies that get stronger specifically because we’re their customer, and that stay independent because independence is working for them."
Daniel considered that for a moment, then smiled. "That’s a different game entirely from the one Meridian’s playing."
"Yes," Adrian said. "That’s rather the point."

The first supplier meeting happened the next morning, with a man named Martin Hale.
Sixty-two years old, an engineer who had spent thirty-four years building a specialist materials company that employed fewer than four hundred people and had never sought to be larger than that. Meridian had offered him ninety-six million pounds for the business outright.
Adrian offered something else entirely — a ten-year purchase agreement with guaranteed minimum annual volume, expansion financing on favourable terms, dedicated research funding, and guaranteed access to Sterling’s future manufacturing programme as both a supplier and, eventually, a technology partner.
Martin listened without interrupting once, his hands folded on the table, and asked a single question when Adrian finished.
"Do you want my company?"
"No."
"Then what do you want?"
"Your material."
Something in Martin’s expression eased. "That’s refreshing, actually."
"I don’t want to own everything I touch."
"Most billionaires say that. Right up until they see the numbers on what owning it would be worth."
"I’m not most billionaires."
"That remains to be seen," Martin said, and laughed — a real laugh, not a polite one. The meeting ran another hour after that, moving through details neither man needed a lawyer present to discuss yet. By the time Martin left, there was no signed agreement on the table.
Just a handshake.
For now, that was enough.

Miriam stood behind the safety glass.

"Run it," Adrian said.
The machine powered up with a familiar hum, the suspended platform lifting one centimetre, then three, then five, settling into the same stable field Adrian had seen in the estate’s underground workshop. Monitors held steady green through ten seconds, twenty, thirty, forty. Through the first minute. The second. The third. The platform stayed suspended without drift.
At four minutes it began drawing more power.
"Hold," Miriam said quietly, and the engineers around her went still until the readings settled again. "Five minutes is genuinely possible."
"Then let’s make it ten."
"Give me a week."
"Five days."
"You’re impossible."
"Five days."
"Fine," she said, already turning back to the monitors.
The machine kept running. Seven minutes. Eight. At nine minutes and twelve seconds, the temperature spiked sharply on the coil housing.
"Shut it down," Miriam called, and the power dropped cleanly, the platform descending in a smooth, controlled motion rather than a failure. No explosion. No dramatic collapse. Just a machine that had finally reached the edge of what its cooling system, redesigned but not yet perfected, could actually handle.
"How close were we?" Adrian asked.
She pulled off her headset, exhaling. "Very."
"Then we know exactly what the next problem is."
"Cooling," she said, and allowed herself a small, tired smile despite the failure. "We’ll solve it."
"I know."

That night, Adrian sat with three documents in front of him. The property contract for Sterling Industrial Works. The handshake agreement with Martin Hale, waiting to be formalised. The preliminary engineering report on the coil redesign, still marked incomplete in Miriam’s careful handwriting.
None of them contained any secrets. None of them belonged to Thomas, or to a trust, or to a succession clause written before Adrian was born. That was exactly why he found himself drawn to them at the end of a long day rather than to Thomas’s notebook, which still sat in the drawer where he’d left it that morning. These were entirely his — his decisions, his risks, his companies, and whatever future came out of them.
At 11:58, the System appeared.
SYSTEM CHECK-IN — DAY 85. REWARD AVAILABLE: £25,000,000 LIQUID CAPITAL. ACCEPT?
He accepted, and the transfer landed almost immediately.
He called Daniel.
"Start the factory conversion tomorrow. Increase the budget to a hundred and fifty million."
A pause on the line. "Adrian, that’s more than the building itself is worth."
"I know."
"Why?"
"Because we’re not renovating a building. We’re building the first factory of Sterling Advanced Industries."
"And what exactly are we manufacturing there?"
"Everything we currently have to import," Adrian said, and ended the call.
Outside, London carried on the way it always did — cars moving under streetlights, office towers glowing across the skyline, millions of people going about entirely ordinary lives, none of them aware that in a converted laboratory across the city, a machine built from ideas more than fifty years old was being rebuilt with modern technology one careful, incremental failure at a time.
He didn’t know yet whether it would become a genuinely revolutionary product, whether the economics would ever justify the investment at scale, or whether Meridian would eventually find a way to reach further into the supply chain than he could build redundancy against. But he knew one thing with complete certainty, sitting alone with the city lit up beyond the window.
He had stopped waiting for the future to arrive on someone else’s schedule.
