Chapter 95: Lurker in the Mist
Gray drifted through the Verdant Hollow’s outer edge, his Hollow Cloak wrapping him in near-invisibility as he left the safety of the glowing grotto behind. The silver fish had returned to the fern beds, and the water was calm again, but Gray knew better than to trust calm.
’Let’s see what’s around here,’ he said quietly.
Cindy’s voice stirred, curious. "You’re not going to rest longer?"
’I’ve rested enough. I want to see what kind of monsters live near this place.’
He moved slowly along the rocky slope beyond the grotto, his tentacles sweeping the water. The terrain here was different from the black sand fields, with pale stone ridges covered in patches of glowing moss, scattered boulders, and narrow ravines that cut deep into the seafloor. The current was gentler, carrying the faint mineral sweetness of the Verdant Hollow.
The first creature he spotted was small, about the size of his bell, and covered in overlapping plates of pale blue chitin. It moved along the rocks on dozens of tiny legs, grazing on the glowing moss. A soft, pulsing light ran along its shell, like a heartbeat made visible.
[GLACIAL MOSS LOUSE — Level 22]
HP: 180 / 180
Threat Level: LOW
« Analysis »
A slow-moving herbivore that feeds on bioluminescent moss and algae. The Glacial Moss Louse’s chitin contains traces of elemental ice, a rare adaptation in the lower abyss. When threatened, it releases a cloud of freezing mist to deter predators.
’Hmm... not a threat. But that ice adaptation is interesting.’
"Are you going to eat it?" Cindy asked.
’Maybe later. Let’s keep looking.’
He drifted past the louse and continued along the ridge. The second creature was stranger. A floating, translucent sac that pulsed with soft orange light. Long, thin tendrils hung beneath it like drifting threads, each one tipped with a tiny glowing bead.
[EMBER DRIFT JELLY — Level 24]
HP: 140 / 140
Threat Level: LOW
« Analysis »
A drifting zooplankton predator that captures small prey with its stinging tendrils. The Ember Drift Jelly’s glow is produced by heat-generating cells that keep it warm in the cold abyssal water. Its tendrils can deliver a burning sting to creatures that touch them.
’A jelly... like me, but different. It’s... weird.’
Cindy made a curious sound. "Do you feel any kinship with it?"
’No. It’s just food.’
The third creature was the one that made Gray stop.
It emerged from a narrow ravine, its body low and serpentine, covered in scales that shifted between deep purple and dark blue. Four short fins ran along its sides maybe for crawling along the rocks. Its head was broad, with a mouth full of small, needle-like teeth. And along its back, a row of fleshy spines pulsed with a faint violet light.
But the most striking thing was its eyes. Large and pale, with no visible pupil, set high on its head. They reflected the green glow of the distant grotto like twin mirrors.
[VEILED CAVE SKULK — Level 27]
HP: 260 / 260
Threat Level: MODERATE
« Analysis »
A cave-dwelling ambush predator that hunts by luring prey toward its pulsing dorsal spines. The Veiled Cave Skulk’s scales are highly reflective, allowing it to blend into mineral-rich rock formations. It moves slowly and deliberately, conserving energy until the moment of attack.
Weakness: Its reflective scales are less effective in open water. The dorsal spines are sensitive to light and can be temporarily overstimulated, causing disorientation.
’A creature that hunts by luring.... and uses reflective camouflage. It’s like the Glimmerworm and the Razorwing had a child.’
Cindy let out a short, nervous laugh. "What a horrifying thought."
Gray watched the Skulk move along the ravine floor, its pale eyes scanning the rocks. It didn’t seem to notice him yet.
’Should I hunt it?’
"Do you need its trait?"
’Not sure but it’s Level 27, the EXP would be decent and it’s in my territory now.’
The Skulk paused, its dorsal spines flaring. A faint violet mist drifted from the tips, spreading through the water. It was marking its territory or setting a trap.
’Actually... let’s watch it for a minute. I want to see how it hunts.’
Gray held his position behind a pale stone ridge, the Veiled Cave Skulk had pressed itself flat against the ravine floor, its scales shifting to match the texture of the surrounding rock. The violet mist from its dorsal spines drifted lazily through the water, spreading outward like a net made of faint, shimmering dust.
’It’s not just marking territory,’ Gray murmured. ’Maybe that mist it’s bait the smell must draw in prey.’
Cindy’s voice came soft. "So it’s the same as the angler types. It lures with scent instead of light."
’Looks like it.’
They didn’t have to wait long.
A small, silver fish darted into view, its body flickering as it followed the drifting violet mist. It moved toward the Skulk’s position, drawn by the scent, unaware of the predator waiting just beneath it.
The Skulk’s body tensed, the pale eyes swiveled upward, locking onto the fish. Then, with a sudden snap of its body, it lunged.
Its jaws closed around the Driftfin in an instant. There was no struggle and no sound. Just the faint, wet crunch of needle teeth puncturing scales and flesh. The Skulk swallowed the fish whole and settled back against the rocks, its spines pulsing with a dimmer, slower rhythm.
’Fast,’ Gray said. ’Not as fast as me, but fast for something that crawls on the seafloor.’
Cindy made a thoughtful sound. "Not a monster I’d want to touch."
Gray stayed still for a long moment, watching the Skulk settle. Then he pushed away from the rock and drifted into the open water above the ravine.
’Let’s test it.’
He dropped Hollow Cloak.
The Skulk’s pale eyes snapped toward him instantly. Its body coiled, its dorsal spines flaring bright violet. The mist around it thickened, spreading outward in dense ribbons.
Gray fired Riptide Slash.
The crescent blade tore through the water and clipped the Skulk’s flank before it could move. The impact threw the creature sideways, its reflective scales scattering the green light in broken patterns. A thin line of dark fluid leaked from the wound.
[RIPTIDE SLASH — 84 DAMAGE]
[VEILED CAVE SKULK — HP: 176 / 260]
The Skulk hissed, a low, grating sound that trembled through the water. Its dorsal spines flared brighter, pulsing with that eerie violet light. A thick cloud of violet mist exploded outward, spreading fast and dense, swallowing the space between them until Gray’s vision was nearly useless. He fired again, but the mist bent and scattered the trajectory. The blade sliced through empty water, striking nothing but drifting haze.
[ATK MISSED]
’It’s using the mist as a smokescreen, smart guy.’
Predator’s Instinct pulled at his nerves.
Gray twisted. The Skulk lunged out of the mist from below, jaws open wide, aiming for his bell. He slipped past it, letting Flow State carry him sideways. The Skulk’s teeth snapped shut inches from his trailing tentacles.
It slid back into the mist, vanishing again.
’So it’s a hit-and-run predator. Uses the mist to hide, then strikes from blind spots.’ Gray said.
’If I can clear the mist, it loses its cover.’
He charged Cavitation Pulse and fired downward into the center of the ravine.
[CAVITATION PULSE — 58 DAMAGE]
[VEILED CAVE SKULK — HP: 118 / 260]
The superheated jet exploded against the seafloor, the shockwave ripping through the violet mist and scattering it outward. The Skulk was thrown from its hiding place, its body tumbling across the rocks in a cloud of steam and debris.
Gray dove, wrapping his tentacles around the Skulk’s body before it could recover. Grip Jaw locked on, the muscular limbs squeezing with crushing force. The Skulk thrashed, its pale eyes rolling as it tried to bite him.
[GRIP JAW — 30 DAMAGE]
[VEILED CAVE SKULK — HP: 88 / 260]
’Now, you’re not getting away—’
But the Skulk had one last trick.
Its dorsal spines flared, and a burst of violet light erupted from them in a sudden, blinding flash that stabbed through Gray’s senses like a spike of white fire. His electroreception flickered, and his tentacles loosened for an instant.
The Skulk tore free and slithered into a narrow crack in the rock.
’Tch... it’s running.’
"Let it go, Gray. It’s not worth it."
’Maybe not.’ Gray floated above the crack, his tentacles twitching. ’But it’s wounded now. If it survives, it might come back and I don’t like leaving enemies alive.’
Cindy sighed. "You’re relentless."
’It’s called being thorough.’
