Marvel: Reincarnated as Superman

Chapter 143: Gamora’s Curiosity

A purplish sky hung over the barren landscape, casting everything beneath it in a strange, oppressive light.

Across the vast yellow wasteland, a group of horned alien warriors stood locked in a tense standoff with a lone, green-skinned woman.

"Gamora, you cannot escape us. Today, I shall finally avenge my slaughtered wife and children. Your father massacred them all, so I’ll slaughter you first to collect a bit of interest. Then, I shall hunt down your father and send the two of you to hell for a family reunion."

The alien possessing the largest pair of horns on his head declared viciously.

"Is that so?" Gamora turned her head, casually scanning the perimeter. "Just the lot of you?"

"More than enough." The horned alien squeezed the trigger.

Having detected his intent ahead of time, Gamora executed a swift roll to dodge the incoming blast. Drawing a pair of twin daggers, she lunged forward rather than retreating, plunging straight into the thick of the enemy ranks.

She weaved through the horned aliens with incredible agility, effortlessly dodging every attack they threw at her. Not a single shot came close to hitting her.

Gamora didn’t strike excessively, but every single blow she delivered was absolutely fatal.

The twin daggers danced like silver lightning in her hands. The flashes of cold metal sliced cleanly through her enemies’ throats and pierced directly through their hearts. A mere few minutes later, only Gamora remained standing amidst the carnage.

The purplish alien blood slowly seeped down into the dry soil. Gazing upon the corpses scattered across the ground, Gamora murmured quietly.

"I’m sorry, but I had no choice. I’ll carry your hatred with me, and one day, I’ll avenge every one of you. And of course... I’ll have my own vengeance to claim as well."

...

As Gamora made her way back to Thanos’s main base, she unexpectedly ran into her sister, Nebula.

"Humph."

The two of them exchanged a brief, chilly glance from their respective vessels before simultaneously averting their eyes with deep disdain.

There had been a time when they were inseparable, bound together like true sisters. Now, they could barely stand the sight of each other.

Walking down the grand corridor leading into the main palace hall, Nebula accelerated her pace to walk alongside Gamora, whispering testily.

"How thoroughly disappointing. You actually managed to return alive. Why haven’t you died yet?"

"Sorry, but I’ve been beating you since we were kids. Do you really think I’m going to die before you?"

"Humph...." Nebula scoffed coldly. Neither of them said another word as they headed straight into the grand audience chamber.

"Father." Gamora and Nebula spoke in unison.

As Gamora looked up at the massive figure seated on the throne, a faint flicker of deeply buried hatred flashed across her eyes.

"Hmm..." Thanos gave a low, rumbling hum. "My daughters, how did your missions go?"

Before Gamora could utter a word, Nebula cut ahead of her to report eagerly.

"Father, the corpses of the traitors you commanded me to eliminate are currently drifting as frozen debris through the cold vacuum of space."

Only after Nebula finished speaking did Gamora calmly respond, "Everything went smoothly."

"You both continue to put my mind at ease, as always," Thanos said, forcing a faint smile as his gaze rested intently upon Gamora.

Seeing that Thanos’s attention was fixed entirely on Gamora, a wave of intense jealousy welled up within Nebula’s heart.

It had always been this way, ever since she was a child. No matter how hard she trained or how many missions she successfully completed for Thanos, he had never truly acknowledged her.

Nebula was filled with resentment, but she didn’t dare show the slightest hint of defiance in front of Thanos. Of everyone in the universe, there was no one she feared more than the towering figure standing before her.

"You are injured?"

Gamora noticed that Thanos seemed to be moving with unusual difficulty, so she asked in a curious tone.

"Haha, my daughter, are you actually worried about me?" Thanos chuckled, but the movement seemed to aggravate his injuries, and he broke into a few deep coughs.

Cough, cough.

Covering his mouth with a massive hand, Thanos admitted:

"Yes, I’m injured. Someone nearly killed me."

Hearing Thanos openly admit that he’d been defeated and brutally beaten in the process left both Gamora and Nebula completely speechless, frozen in stunned disbelief.

’How could this possibly be?’

The exact same thought surfaced simultaneously within both their minds.

Their father was Thanos, after all, the Titan who had rampaged across the universe with seemingly nothing capable of stopping him. So, what the hell had they just heard?

Thanos had been defeated, completely and utterly defeated.

Neither Gamora nor Nebula could bring themselves to accept it. From the moment they were children, Thanos had carved an image of absolute power into their minds. He was unstoppable, invincible, and a force of nature that no one dared challenge.

And yet, today, that very same Thanos had openly admitted that someone had beaten him down.

A strange, unsettling sense of loss and psychological disorientation began to stir within Gamora and Nebula.

Their feelings toward Thanos had always been painfully complicated. He was their adoptive father, yet from a very young age, they had both known the truth: Thanos was the monster responsible for killing their biological parents.

He had taken them in only to put them through years of brutal, merciless training, breaking them down and rebuilding them into weapons.

Gamora and Nebula had harbored nothing but hatred for Thanos for as long as they could remember. Yet his overwhelming power had kept them from ever daring to rebel against him. Deep down, both sisters had dreamed of one day killing Thanos with their own hands.

So why, when they finally learned that someone else had defeated him, was their first reaction not joy or relief, but a strange and profound emptiness?

Neither Gamora nor Nebula could understand the feeling, what caused it or why it affected them so deeply.

After a long, tense silence, Nebula finally broke it.

"They must have used some kind of dirty trick, right? They caught you off guard and attacked you when you weren’t prepared. That’s why you ended up with these injuries... isn’t it?"

For reasons even she couldn’t understand, a desperate glimmer of hope flickered in Nebula’s eyes, hoping Thanos would give the answer she wanted to hear. However, she was destined for disappointment.

"No," Thanos said flatly. He had never been one to lie, so he answered without hesitation.

"I was defeated by him without ever having a chance to fight back. He drove me deep into the ground, one punch after another."

"How could that happen?" Nebula said in disbelief. "That’s impossible!"

The invincible image of Thanos that had been etched into Nebula’s mind shattered in an instant. More than Gamora, she had always feared and revered him, almost as though he were some kind of living god.

But now, that image was crumbling before her eyes. The absolute faith she had placed in Thanos had completely collapsed.

"My daughter, there’s no need to be so surprised. The universe is vast beyond comprehension. It’s only natural that there are beings out there stronger than me," Thanos said calmly.

"Never forget to hold a deep respect for the universe and all that exists within it."

"Being defeated this time doesn’t fill me with despair. If anything, I find myself feeling a strange sense of joy," Thanos said, a distant, almost nostalgic look crossing his face.

"How many years has it been? Ever since I left Titan, I haven’t encountered a single opponent truly worthy of my strength. I have been alone for far too long."

His eyes gleamed with something almost akin to excitement.

"The skills I spent countless years honing have gone unused for far too long, but now, at last, a truly formidable opponent has appeared. I can’t help but feel excited at the prospect of facing him again."

"I had grown complacent for far too long. Losing this battle means nothing. I’ll simply win the next one. Trust me when I face that person again, I’ll make them pay. This defeat will be nothing more than a minor setback, and I’ll make certain I come out on top the next time."

Thanos spoke with unwavering conviction, and his words reignited something deep within Nebula. She bowed her head before him, the fanaticism slowly returning to her eyes.

"I believe in you."

Gamora watched in silence, her expression cold and analytical. She understood Thanos far too well. He had never been one for long-winded speeches.

He was, at his core, a ruthless pragmatist who preferred to let his actions speak for him, and he possessed an almost absolute confidence in his own strength.

That was precisely why his words struck her as so unusual. The fact that he had said so much this time told her something was different.

For the first time, Thanos seemed to have lost some of his certainty. He was no longer completely convinced that his raw power alone would be enough to overcome his enemy, the very person who had beaten him so badly.

Strangely enough, Gamora found herself genuinely curious about the individual who had managed to defeat her father.

Was the person a man or a woman? What did they actually look like?

Surely, he had to be enormous, far larger and more imposing than her father, with massive muscles and an overwhelming presence that would make an ordinary person instinctively lower their gaze.

The more Gamora thought about it, the more she wanted to know who had actually managed to defeat Thanos. Unable to contain her curiosity, she finally spoke.

"Father, who exactly was the person who defeated you?"

Thanos fell silent at the question. For a moment, he said nothing. Then, he spoke the name that had been seared into his memory, each syllable carrying unmistakable weight.

"Daniel Danvers."
