Chapter 149: Chapter 148 – Before the Great Council of King’s Landing (V)
Crownlands, King’s Landing.
With a powerful, loud roar announcing his arrival, the platinum dragon flew over the city, darkening the sky with his titanic size. Behind the platinum dragon, a smaller silver dragon glided elegantly through the air.
They were Bahamut and Silverwing.
The city, as lively as ever, paused for a moment before returning to normal. If there were people in the world used to dragons, it was the inhabitants of King’s Landing. Still, there were exclamations and shouts of joy when the platinum dragon appeared.
Maekar noticed this and realized that the effort he had put into this war had paid off. His prestige was at its peak; even if Viserys won and he had to usurp the throne, the people would still stand by him. Though the nobles would not think the same way.
Setting those thoughts aside, Maekar had Bahamut land in the outer area of the Dragonpit. The dragon touched down with a thunderous sound and lowered his body to the ground. The dragonkeepers approached the dragon in their black scaled armor.
An older guard approached with a calm expression. He had Valyrian features, likely a man from Dragonstone. Which was normal; only loyal men could be trusted to protect House Targaryen’s most precious assets.
These men, besides being well compensated, could become knights after overcoming many hardships. It was one of the knightly orders exclusive to House Targaryen.
Maekar dismounted the dragon and pulled off his gloves. He touched Bahamut’s scales and, with a smile, said, “Be a good boy and don’t try to eat anyone.”
Bahamut’s answer was a nasal sound accompanied by a puff of smoke.
Maekar turned to the Dragonkeepers and spoke in a calm tone. “Just feed him; no need to put him inside the Dragonpit.”
Honestly, that was against the rules, but, faced with Maekar and the giant dragon, the elder simply nodded. Fortunately, he had cared for Bahamut before and knew the dragon was not particularly active like Dreamfyre and Vermithor.
Shortly after Bahamut landed, Silverwing touched down gracefully on the ground. The beautiful dragon lowered herself to the ground and let out a gentle, graceful sound. The Dragonkeepers quickly brought a wooden ladder and helped the queen down.
Maekar looked at Melinda, descending with Alysanne, with a hint of amusement on his face. The girl was pale, her legs trembling, her eyes empty and lifeless. Common humans certainly were not as enthusiastic about dragons as the Blood of Old Valyria.
Suddenly, hearing the sound of trotting horses, Maekar looked toward the exit of the Dragonpit and saw a female figure riding a black horse. She wore silver armor with a red cloak over her shoulders. House Dayne’s sigil was worked intricately into the armor’s chest.
It was Clarisse Dayne.
“It’s been a while, Clarisse,” Maekar said to his future Lady Commander of the Kingsguard.
“My prince.” Clarisse dismounted and greeted Maekar with a solemn look, though there was a hint of resentment in her gaze.
Maekar certainly knew the reason for her resentment; after all, he had practically left the woman aside while flying to so many places. For Clarisse, who wished to protect Maekar, being left behind was worse than losing an extremely important duel.
“Forgive me, but a great many things happened.” Maekar said in a sincerely apologetic tone. He truly wished, at times, that he had had this woman at his side. It might have spared him some trouble.
The sincere apology made the resentment on Clarisse’s face vanish. Of course she knew what was happening. It was only her feelings speaking louder than her reason. It had simply been impossible to keep up with the prince given how mobile he needed to be in the ongoing war.
“The carriage is ready, my prince.” Clarisse said, regaining her composure.
“Maekar, this must be Lady Clarisse.” Suddenly, hearing an aged woman’s voice, Clarisse looked at Alysanne and bowed respectfully.
“My queen.” There was respect and admiration in the swordswoman’s tone. Perhaps there was not a single woman on the continent who did not admire Alysanne. The queen had fought for a better life for women and achieved it with great courage.
The terrible Right of the First Night had been abolished because of Alysanne.
Looking at the armored woman before her, Alysanne could not help but think of her own loyal protector, Jonquil Darke, the Scarlet Shadow.
“Protect Maekar well; sometimes he can put himself in danger over his insane plans.” Alysanne said with a smile as she was helped along by Melinda, who was also looking at Clarisse with curiosity.
Faced with Alysanne’s encouraging words, a woman she deeply admired, Clarisse unconsciously puffed out her chest and felt her blood boil with emotion. “I will protect him with my life, my queen!” She said in a loud, clear tone.
Alysanne laughed, and Maekar merely rolled his eyes, unhappy with Alysanne’s words. He was obviously a good strategist. Though there could be some danger, nothing in the world could truly be one hundred percent safe.
Clarisse escorted everyone to the metal carriage drawn by four horses and mounted her own horse, following the carriage with a cold expression.
In the outer area of the Dragonpit, Bahamut looked at the beautiful silver dragon and felt an unfamiliar fire stir within his body. He had never noticed it before, but the female before him was truly very beautiful…
Letting out a powerful, guttural sound, Bahamut spread his wings and displayed his entire body to Silverwing in all its glory.
Mating between dragons was fairly simple. It could be summed up in one sentence. “I like you; look how big and powerful I am.”
Silverwing naturally noticed Bahamut and the scent of pheromones in the air; she looked him up and down and seemingly liked what she saw. However, as a proud queen, how could she bow to a platinum-colored rogue with a narcissistic complex?
So, the silver dragon turned her head and ignored the platinum dragon’s advances.
Bahamut, seeing that his seduction had failed completely, wore a human-like expression of pure shock and disbelief. He was clearly bigger than that bronze-colored bastard and much more handsome; his scales shone brighter, and even his wings were bigger!
Bahamut’s arrogant mind simply could not understand how he had been rejected by Silverwing. Still, as a proud male, how could he lower himself enough to try a second time?
The Dragonkeepers, realizing what was happening, were left speechless.
(Note: Poor Bahamut suffered the fate of every man; he had to suffer at least once in his life: being rejected by a woman.)
Inside the carriage, Maekar, unaware that Bahamut had just gone through every man’s canonical rite of passage, looked out at the city with a calm gaze.
The carriage moved quickly through the city’s streets. But wherever it passed, people shouted at the carriage.
“PRINCE MAEKAR!!!”
“LONG LIVE THE PRINCE!”
“THE TRUE KING!!!!”
Maekar smiled hearing those words. It seemed things were going better than he expected. Still, that was good. The people’s approval was something necessary for a stable rule.
“The mood in the city is quite worked up.” Alysanne remarked, hearing the excited voices outside the carriage. She could see that King’s Landing looked like a volcano, only waiting for the right moment to erupt.
“It’s better this way; people will stay entertained and won’t think too much.” Maekar answered in an amused tone.
“The city is going to turn into a battlefield.” Alysanne frowned and said, looking at her grandson as the carriage swayed.
“That’s still a good thing; it’s better if they get even more worked up. If I don’t win, the people might revolt and put me on the throne themselves.” Maekar looked out at the people outside the carriage and spoke with an enigmatic smile, as if picturing the scene.
Alysanne looked deeply at Maekar. She certainly understood the implication in her grandson’s words, usurping the throne.
For the first time, the queen felt that Jaehaerys’s worries about Maekar were not unfounded. Still, she trusted that Maekar would never torment his own kin over the throne. He would not be a second Maegor.
Though she knew Jaehaerys seriously doubted that claim.
