Chapter 117: Chapter 116 – The Fall of the Triarchy (I)
One day later.
Braavos, Palace of the Sealord.
Bessaro Reyaan, the Sealord, looked at the letter before him with eyes full of fury. He had finally managed to breathe a sigh of relief with the Triarchy’s entry into the war, but his relief hadn’t even lasted a month!
The news that Myr had been destroyed had already reached Bessaro’s desk, as had the withdrawal of Lys and Tyrosh from the war. At the same time, the dissolution of the Triarchy had become public knowledge. The powerful alliance had completely collapsed.
“YOU BUNCH OF USELESS FOOLS!!!!” Smashing a ceramic vase from Yi Ti, Bessaro roared furiously. “YOU HAD ONE JOB: CAUSE PROBLEMS AND RUN!!!”
The more he thought about this fact, the angrier Bessaro became. The noble class of Braavos was already pressuring him to end the war as quickly as possible, since the naval blockade was already causing serious damage to Braavos’s economy.
But Bessaro couldn’t accept such things. If he actually ended this war and asked for peace, he had no doubt he would be removed from the position of Sealord. So, even knowing he was in serious trouble, he just gritted his teeth and continued the war.
“We have to attack the ports in Westeros.” Bessaro murmured in a cold tone. Just as he was being pressured by the noble class of Braavos, Jaehaerys would be in the same situation. He only needed to cause problems to make the nobles of Westeros pressure the king even further.
Bessaro only needed a draw in this war, not a victory, and the Old King didn’t need a victory either.
However, Bessaro forgot something very important, or rather, he had never really cared about it. He didn’t know Jaehaerys’s standing among the common people and the nobles. Even if they were dissatisfied with Jaehaerys, no one would dare question the greatest king this continent had ever seen.
Jaehaerys had done too many good things for the people to try anything against him. Not to mention the king was a powerful man with a giant dragon. Especially at this moment, when powerful lords were dying like flies.
No one wanted to end up like Loreon or Matthos.
“Order the fleet to advance toward White Harbor; we’ll attack the Port of the North and then advance to attack the coasts of the Westerlands. ” Bessaro promptly passed the orders to his subordinates, who obeyed.
Suddenly, touching his head, Bessaro looked at the fistful of hair between his fingers and realized he had torn out a lock of hair. There was even blood on the ends of the strands, showing how hard he had pulled.
“I need to relax.” Bessaro murmured, throwing the hair on the ground. He felt increasingly stressed; not only was his hair falling out, he was also pulling it out unconsciously.
Letting out another sigh, the Sealord poured himself a cup of wine and drank the purple liquid in one gulp.
“Damned bastard, couldn’t he just be an ordinary bastard?” Bessaro murmured, remembering the rumors he’d heard about Maekar and his dragon, the Pale Death.
At Dragonstone.
More and more gold was being poured into the vaults of Dragonstone, filling the vaults with veritable mountains of gold. Even Maekar, who didn’t care much about money, couldn’t help breathing a bit faster at the sight of so many gold coins.
At this moment, he sort of understood why Smaug stole the dwarves’ treasure. Seeing that much gold every day would make anyone very happy.
Maekar wanted to dive into that mountain of gold, like in some old cartoons, but he soon dismissed the idea. He knew the coins wouldn’t behave like a liquid but like solid objects. Making it impossible to swim in a pile of gold coins.
“I have to say, these free cities are truly wealthy.” Alysanne, who was beside Maekar, remarked with a sigh full of admiration. The free cities really had grown extremely rich because of their privileged positions.
However, Alysanne had no idea the free cities were wealthier than she imagined. If her husband knew this, he probably would have found some excuse to attack and blackmail Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh.
“Slaves are a profitable industry, not to mention the spices and specialties of the free cities. It’s only natural they’ve accumulated great wealth over more than three hundred years.” Maekar said with a smile. He was feeling very happy about the sudden wealth.
Hearing the mention of slavery, Alysanne frowned. She hated the idea of enslaving other people. Unfortunately, whether it was her own ancestors or all the other powers of Essos, they had enslaved people to meet the need for labor.
“By the way, who is this lovely young girl?” Alysanne had, of course, seen Melinda beside Maekar, following him in complete silence. There was no way not to notice her; her dark skin and golden eyes were too striking.
“My cupbearer, you’ll find her fascinating.” Maekar said, showing an amused smile. What happens when two women who love knowledge meet each other? The answer is simple: a long session of studying and debating.
Alysanne smiled gently at the girl but didn’t respond to Maekar’s words. What could there be about such a young girl that could be considered fascinating? If she hadn’t known Maekar liked older women, she would have assumed Maekar liked young girls.
“You’re underestimating her because of her young age; the girl can speak countless languages, and she’s an excellent scribe.” Maekar knew Alysanne wouldn’t be interested in Melinda because of the girl’s young age and spoke with a smile.
His reason for doing something like this was that he wanted Alysanne to teach the girl the local customs of Westeros for a while, as well as teach her common knowledge.
Alysanne was surprised and looked at Melinda with curiosity. It was truly hard to believe that a ten-year-old child could be such an excellent scribe. However, remembering Maekar and his age, she set aside that foolish thought.
“What do you want me to do with her?” Alysanne was direct in her words.
“Teach her the basics about Westeros and common sense,” Maekar answered in a gentle tone. “Although she’s intelligent, she’s a child and I don’t have the time.”
Alysanne thought for a moment and nodded. Either way, with Maekar’s arrival at Dragonstone, she had a lot of free time. She didn’t mind spending some time with such an adorable and intelligent child.
Melinda, hearing Maekar’s words, looked at the elderly-looking woman with curiosity. Despite her age, she seemed elegant and graceful. Those blue eyes were gentle and full of wisdom. Hearing the whispers around her, she also knew this woman was none other than the most powerful woman on the continent of Westeros.
Queen Alysanne I Targaryen, wife of Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
Knowing she could truly be taught by such a powerful figure made Melinda’s usually stoic face show a trace of shyness and inferiority.
“Remember to learn well.” Maekar stroked Melinda’s hair and spoke with a smile. He truly had great expectations for this girl.
Melinda nodded and showed a determined look.
