Chapter 114: The Burning of Myr (I)
Chapter 114: Chapter 113 – The Burning of Myr (I)
Although Myr was walled and had a decent defense, the magistrates generously paid off passing Dothraki khals to keep their khalasars from sacking the city. However, seeing the size of the wall, which was about three meters tall, he understood the reason.
These walls served no purpose other than being a pretty wall, with no defense at all against invaders. It was so easy to get over the walls that even a normal adult could climb them or use a simple ladder.
Myr was a port city, and, like all port cities, all kinds of people could be seen in the streets. Above the stone and terracotta rooftops rose elegant towers, domes, merchants’ mansions, and temples dedicated to different gods, since in Myr no single faith completely dominated the others. Near the harbor, among shrines and warehouses, there also rose a red temple dedicated to R’hllor.
In the sky, Maekar looked at the city with a calm look. Many might think burning the city was the easiest way to break the government, but Maekar disagreed. Besides wasting time, it wouldn’t accomplish much.
Maekar preferred to attack the core of the government and kill all the rulers; then, he would kill people who could rule after the deaths of the previous rulers. This way, besides saving a lot of time, he could completely break Myr.
After all, Myr’s main weakness was that the magistrates were chosen from among the richest and most noble men in the city. Once those men died, the entire city would collapse. Even if it managed to rise again, it would take a long time to actually achieve a stable government.
Not to mention that, if Myr was left in this weakened state, other free cities would look at the city with greed, especially Pentos, Volantis, Tyrosh, and Braavos.
As for finding the noble class in a city with nearly a million people? Well, that was easy. Just look at the richest district in the city and the ones with the best mansions.
Maekar, looking down at the city, quickly located the palace of the conclave of magistrates. It was in the center of the city, built on a hill. It was made entirely of white marble and gleamed under the sunlight. Around the palace were large mansions, huge houses, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Looking at that place, Maekar showed a cruel look. He knew there were innocents in that place, especially the slaves, but, in the face of war, people weren’t people, just numbers that no one cared about.
Maekar mourned the sad fate of these people but didn’t hesitate and made the dragon beneath him begin a free descent in a straight line toward the city. He narrowed his eyes because of the wind against his face and leaned forward.
Before him, the city was growing bigger and more magnificent.
Meanwhile, in Myr, the people still went about their trade as if they weren’t at war. Or rather, they knew they were at war, but poverty forced them to go to work, even if they didn’t want to. Not to mention the slaves, who simply went to work regardless of their own choices.
Melinda was a ten-year-old girl; she had a round, flat face, dark skin, and a striking pair of eyes like molten gold. Features typical of the people of Naath. She was intelligent and had been bought as a slave exactly for that reason.
She knew all nine bastard versions of High Valyrian, including even pure High Valyrian. She had been bought to be a scribe by a woman who owned a bar.
At that moment, Melinda looked at the sea and saw a huge cloud of smoke rising into the sky. Her eyes moved toward the sky, searching for something, and finally saw it.
A platinum shadow approaching the city extremely fast. The girl didn’t hesitate and run toward the outskirts of the city, completely changing her route to the bar where she worked. The girl ran among the people and never looked back.
There was only one reason for a dragon to come to an enemy city. Melinda knew this and didn’t dare stop for even a moment.
However, as she ran, she heard screams behind her. She couldn’t contain her curiosity and looked back. Then, before her unfolded a scene so incredible that it made her forget to run or even breathe.
The dragon flew dangerously close to the city, but specifically over Jewel Street, where the nobles and the rich lived. Then, flames poured from the dragon’s mouth. It looked like silver in the shape of fire, falling from the sky like the justice of the gods, condemning all sinners to death.
Melinda saw the dragon continue pouring flames only over Jewel Street and understood that the dragon rider wouldn’t attack the outskirts of the city. This made her eyes light up. After hesitating for a moment, she turned her body and ran toward the center of the city.
–
On the other side, Maekar made Bahamut land in the center of the city after the first flames. The dragon trampled everything in his path, whether mansions or people. His surroundings had already turned into a hell of platinum flames.
Maekar looked at the magistrate’s palace in flames and showed a calm expression. He was in the saddle, watching Bahamut’s thick neck move from side to side as the dragon poured flames at short intervals.
Every time the dragon spat flames, he could see the dragon’s neck pull back slightly, showing how potent the flames were, as well as how fast they were.
Looking around, Maekar saw people running, only to be reduced to ashes by a gust of platinum fire. Everyone who moved was Bahamut’s target. The dragon moved among the melting ruins, searching for anything that moved even slightly.
Whether nobles or slaves, all were equal in death. Bahamut was making sure of that. However, Maekar was controlling the dragon with the reins, keeping him from indiscriminately killing the slaves.
Maekar, feeling he had already been on the ground long enough, pulled the reins and spoke in High Valyrian. “Sovegon, Bahamut!”
The platinum dragon didn’t hesitate, started running, and took flight toward the sky. Rising quickly, reaching above the city.
The prince looked down and saw the center of Myr completely in flames. There wasn’t a mansion or palace that wasn’t burning. This brought a feeling of satisfaction to Maekar. The Triarchy had brought this war upon themselves. If they hadn’t intervened and accepted Jaehaerys’s compensation, this wouldn’t have happened.
Suddenly, giant arrows crossed the air and passed about twenty meters from Maekar and Bahamut. The dragon and rider looked to the left and saw, atop the walls, about ten scorpions aiming at them.
Bahamut, without needing Maekar’s orders, turned his body and changed direction. The dragon, flying extremely fast, reached the walls within a minute. Flames poured from his mouth, destroying the scorpions and everyone who was nearby.
Knowing that Myr had scorpions on the wall, Maekar changed strategy; he made Bahamut fly along the wall and, as he expected, found other scorpions. The dragon landed on the wall and, using his tail in a circular motion, swept everything off the top of the wall.
“RHUARRHGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!”
Bahamut opened his mouth and roared at the whole city. He moved his enormous body on the narrow wall, knocking it down in the process. However, the dragon didn’t care and took flight again. He glided through the air and advanced once more toward the center of the city.
Seeing the white palace still in flames. The dragon landed on the ivory dome and coiled his neck while his golden eyes fixed on the burning buildings around him.
To the people of Myr, they only saw the gigantic monster atop the magistrates’ palace; flames burned around it, making the dragon even more frightening.
Maekar, who was in the saddle, looked at the city and showed a thoughtful look.
Destroying Myr was easier than expected. Which, thinking about it, wasn’t really a surprise. Destroying a city-state was much easier than destroying a kingdom.
Huh?
Suddenly, Maekar saw a small figure helping other slaves flee from the flames. He couldn’t help but feel curious.
Patting the dragon’s neck twice, Maekar held the reins and made the dragon advance toward the slaves.
