Chapter 112: The Battle of the Sea of Myrth (II)
Chapter 112: Chapter 111 – The Battle of the Sea of Myrth (II)
With his hair fluttering in the wind, Maekar looked down and saw a sea of blue waters. It was almost surrounded by land on both sides and went into the continent of Essos. At this moment, a fleet of ships could be seen sailing in a straight line toward the continent.
Looking further ahead, Maekar narrowed his eyes and saw another fleet of ships, but much smaller than the first. Apparently, they were already waiting for the Velaryon Fleet to arrive. Which was no surprise. It was hard for anyone not to notice a fleet of ships.
However, this was part of Maekar and Corlys’s plans. The defeat of the Triarchy at the hands of Corlys had already damaged the fleet of ships, and not many ships from Myr remained to safely protect their waters.
Looking back, the second fleet of House Velaryon and other noble houses were far off, protecting the flanks of the main fleet. Any attack coming from Tyrosh would be blocked by the second fleet, giving enough time to burn the Free City of Myr.
Taking a deep breath, Maekar gripped the reins tightly; he made Bahamut begin a descent at a ninety-degree angle. The gigantic dragon glided through the air with surprising agility and tore through the air with his colossal size.
On the warship called Sea Snake, Corlys, wearing silver armor, watched the dragon pass above him, drew his sword, and shouted at the top of his lungs. “ATTACK!!!”
The thirty-six warships tore through the waves of the sea and advanced at full speed. The trebuchets on the bows of the ships began to arm themselves. The sailors grabbed jars of oil and placed them in the receptacle for the projectile.
They put cloths on the thin rim of the jars and used torches to burn the cloths.
“FIRE!” The soldiers stepped back and shouted at the same time.
Without any hesitation, the other sailors pulled the lever, and the trebuchet mechanism was triggered. The jars containing oil, with the cloths burning, were launched into the sky and made an arc as they spun through the air at high speed.
Unlike the trebuchets on land, the trebuchets on the ships were far fewer, but they made up for it in terms of precision. Although it still wasn’t that much of an improvement. Jars of oil weren’t exactly the best projectile to fire at long range.
Of the thirty-six projectiles that fell from the sky in a curve, only five hit their mark. The jars shattered, spreading the oil, and the fire from the cloths came into contact with the flammable liquid, causing flames to spread over an area of two meters.
Of the five projectiles that hit, two struck the sails, and the other three struck the ships’ rigging, without causing much damage.
However, there was something even worse waiting for those nineteen warships from Myr. A gigantic dragon flew over them.
Maekar looked at the ship ahead of him and said in a calm tone. “Dracarys, Bahamut.”
The platinum dragon opened his jaws, and flames poured from the dragon’s mouth in the shape of a funnel. They struck a warship head-on. The platinum flames with golden hues burned the ship’s sails in the mere blink of an eye; then, the wood was reduced to nothing, so the people didn’t even have time to scream before being reduced to a handful of ashes.
In one second, no more and no less, a ship with forty or more human lives disappeared before everyone’s eyes.
Corlys, who watched the scene, couldn’t help but feel a chill run through his body. He remembered the words and the look he gave Daemon. The image of the red dragon with the serpentine body made him feel like he was in a cave of ice.
Did I really dare to fight these monsters, or rather, did I really dare to defy the king over mere kinship? Corlys thought as he swallowed the saliva that had built up in his mouth. He realized that his fleet, his wealth, and his power were nothing before dragonfire.
Especially an adult dragon, an extremely large one. Harren the Black was more powerful than him with that invincible castle, but, before Balerion, he died while the most powerful castle on the continent literally melted like a candle.
Corlys’s arrogance was practically extinguished seeing the scene before him. He had seen dragons before, even Balerion, when Prince Viserys first flew on the black dragon. But seeing a dragon and seeing it causing destruction were two different things.
Suddenly, seeing the ships breaking apart and fleeing in different directions, Corlys woke from his daydreaming and shouted out loud. “Fire the jars!!!”
He didn’t care about the ships breaking apart and fleeing in terror because of the enormous dragon; his and Maekar’s target had always been Myr. With the ships fleeing, the way to Myr was completely clear.
In the air, Maekar noticed this and showed a cold look. Controlling Bahamut with the reins, the dragon and rider seemed like a single body. The platinum dragon circled in the air and changed direction, making a wide turn as he banked.
Bahamut was too large, so the turns he made were wide, which was a weakness of large dragons. Just as Vhagar and Balerion had the same problems. This was exactly why Maekar usually used Bahamut in a free descent in a straight line or at a ninety-degree angle, perfect for changing direction quickly.
Unlike the other times he breathed fire against ships and was struck by a scorpion, Bahamut moved unpredictably in the air. Always changing place and direction, never really flying in a straight line toward the target.
The dragon was already experienced after taking part in so many naval battles.
And, as Bahamut expected, giant arrows came at him spinning through the air, but the dragon had already beaten his wings hard, propelling himself forward, easily dodging the Scorpions’ arrows.
Bahamut’s golden eyes fixed on the ship that had just fired at him, and, without needing Maekar’s command, he opened his jaws, and flames engulfed the entire ship.
Bahamut changed direction and headed toward the next target.
On one of the warships called White Pearl, the Admiral Prince of Myr, Cregan Draghas.
(Note: Yes, this is the father of Craghas Drahar, who fights against Daemon at Stepstones in House of The Dragon.)
The sea admiral prince had black hair with white streaks, eyes gray as steel, and a hard expression.
Seeing the sailors’ fear and the dragon in the distance, burning yet another ship, making it disappear from the world in seconds, Cregan also felt fear, but, as Sea Admiral Prince, he knew he had to keep things under control or the entire fleet of Myr would be destroyed under the dragon’s flames.
Suddenly, an idea appeared in Cregan’s mind. He looked at the Velaryon Fleet, at the legendary Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon, and showed a mad smile.
“Boys, raise the sails; let’s collide with the Velaryon fleet!!!” Cregan shouted and turned the ship’s helm, making the vessel make a wide turn in the generally calmer waters of the Sea of Myrth.
The captains on the other ships, seeing the sea admiral prince advancing against the enemy, showed hesitation but followed behind. They only had two choices: die under the dragon’s flames or follow the sea admiral prince with a shred of hope.
However, of the remaining ships, which were fourteen, only five followed behind Cregan; the others fled without even looking back.
Corlys immediately noticed the enemy ship’s movement and showed a stunned expression. He couldn’t believe that six warships were coming straight at a fleet of thirty-six ships. It was such an unreal scene that, even with all his experience, the Sea Snake was stunned for long seconds.
However, Corlys soon understood the Sea Admiral Prince’s thoughts and showed a cautious expression.
The Sea Admiral Prince of Myr wanted to use the Velaryon Fleet as a shield and stop the dragon’s flames. Honestly, it was a good move. If they stayed apart, they would be destroyed one by one by the dragon’s flames.
Using the Velaryon fleet could be dangerous and even extremely deadly, but at least they had a chance to flee, since they were fighting against humans, not against a gigantic dragon that could make a ship disappear in seconds.
However, Corlys did not order another round of oil jars to be fired. He couldn’t spend that much oil; he was saving it to use on Myr.
“PREPARE FOR BATTLE!!!” Corlys roared as he gripped his sword firmly.
