Chapter 99 - 98 - Problems (IV)
When Hubary returned to his makeshift cabin, as soon as he entered, he saw dozens of people talking in low voices. The smell was rather unbearable, but it was probably one of the milder smells he had experienced over thirty years.
"Children, we have our orders." Showing a cold smile, Hubary spoke, drawing the cutlass at his waist. The dozens of pirates rose and also drew their weapons. Some carried rapiers, others sabers. However, there was one thing all the weapons had in common. They were especially sharp.
Hubary, accompanied by dozens of pirates, quickly approached and used the shadows to their advantage. After Caraxes had burned the entire town and 80% of its population, wooden huts had been erected in its place.
The pirates living in them were pirate groups from other islands, forced by Daemon and Caraxes to make their way to Bloodstone. Of course, it was in these clashes that Daemon had been wounded; an arrow had struck him in the stomach and pierced through his armor.
"Kill every last one of those Red Bones bastards." Hubary whispered in a cold, murderous tone. If there was one pirate group he hated, it was the Red Bones. The bastards were sadistic and enjoyed pulling the bones out of people while they were still alive.
However, that was not what made Hubary choose the Red Bones as his target, but rather the madness of these men. Some of them were even cannibals. Even among pirates, they were the scum of the scum. If not for Daemon being unaware of this, perhaps even he would not have tried to win these men over.
The Black Triton pirates advanced, trying to make as little noise as possible. They were not novices who had never seen blood; they were pirates who had spent their entire lives going from one battle to the next. If there was one truth in this world, it was that mercenaries and pirates could be some of the most experienced soldiers on the planet.
These men lived between life and death every single week. Being in a battle was, to them, like coming home.
The best part was that these men had no honor whatsoever; simply surviving another day was the only thing that mattered to them.
Hubary looked at the bonfire burning nearby and looked at the wooden houses with a cold gaze. He thought of a way to gain an advantage in this fight. The captain approached the fire and picked up a piece of wood still burning with flames.
The pirates behind him, seeing the captain’s actions, smiled and guessed his intention. Every one of them picked up a piece of wood and approached the wooden houses. Hubary did not need to give any orders; everyone already knew what to do.
Soon, the fire began to spread through the newly built huts standing amid the ruins of the old wooden town. The straw roofs only helped the flames spread even further.
However, being pirates themselves, the Red Bones were no fools; no one slept deeply, so they soon came rushing out of the still-burning houses. Some had severe burns, others were not burned at all, having only inhaled a great deal of smoke.
Hubary clicked his tongue in disappointment but was not particularly surprised. No one was foolish enough to sleep deeply, though he had still held out a little hope. Unfortunately, the bastards had remained quite cautious.
"HUBARY!!!!" A furious shout rang out at that moment. A naked man appeared before Hubary, standing two meters tall and looking like a monster made entirely of muscle. He was bald, and there were red lines across his head, like tribal tattoos. The man unexpectedly held a spear in his hand. A curious weapon for a pirate.
It was none other than the Captain of the Red Bones, Erick the Red.
Hubary showed no fear and simply gripped his cutlass firmly and advanced toward Erick. Even knowing he would be no match for the monster in raw strength, he was faster than him.
Despite his fury, Erick showed a cold, calm look. Being mad did not mean being stupid. Madness and stupidity were two different things.
Holding the spear, Erick, who had the advantage of a long-reach weapon, made good use of it. He swung the spear toward Hubary; the tip of the spear was aimed directly at the most vulnerable part of his enemy’s neck.
Hubary used his cutlass to defend against the attack and twisted his body to Erick’s side. He moved his hand and swung the blade upward from below at a difficult angle.
However, Erick did not stand still waiting for the blow and forced his body to the side. But it was already too late; the tip of the blade struck him between the third and fourth ribs. A clean, fairly deep cut opened across his ribs.
Hubary had no time to feel pleased; he saw Erick ignore the pain and twist his body. The man’s bare leg appeared in his field of view. In the next instant, the captain simply felt as though he had been kicked by a horse.
His body flew back about a meter and crashed heavily to the ground. Hubary felt his lungs stop breathing and was left gasping for air. However, his instincts, honed over thirty years, made him roll to the side. The very next second after he moved, the tip of the spear pierced the ground.
Managing to get back up, still somewhat disoriented, Hubary took a deep breath and felt his lungs burn. It felt as though he were breathing lava. Looking at Erick closing in, Hubary showed a cruel look and charged forward.
"I am going to break every bone in your body and make soup out of them," Erick said, ignoring the bleeding from his ribs.
While the two fought, Hubary’s men and Erick’s men clashed with one another. But, unlike the difficulty Hubary was having facing Erick, their subordinates did not share that same difficulty. Erick’s men were burned, had breathed in too much smoke, and were slow.
Hubary’s men managed to kill seven pirates in a short span of time, and it would not be long before they slaughtered every last one of them.
"HURRY, KILL THESE CANNIBAL BASTARDS AND HELP THE CAPTAIN!!!" The second in command aboard the Black Triton, Harlam, saw Hubary’s dire situation and shouted at the top of his lungs.
The pirates quickened their movements and swung their weapons even faster; they even ignored their own wounds and killed the enemy swiftly and precisely. One could see that Hubary was a good captain to his crew.
When the last of the Red Bones men fell, four Black Triton pirates fell as well, but these men did not mourn their fallen comrades and instead pressed forward against Erick.
Hubary, who was already in terrible shape, showed a calm look as he defended against Erick’s spear. Every clash made his hands tremble. Despite being human trash, Erick was incredibly strong.
"KILL HIM!!!"
"CAPTAIN, WE ARE COMING!!!"
"KILL ERICK!!!"
Baring his blood-covered teeth, Hubary looked at Erick with a smile and spoke in a tone full of pleasure. "You are going to die, you cannibal bastard."
Erick, noticing this, showed a look of fear and, without any hesitation, ran toward the depths of the island. Honor? Anger? Fury? What were those things next to one’s own life?
Hubary’s expression changed; he wanted to run after him, but his wounded body would not allow it. By the time his allies arrived, Erick was already too far away for any pursuit. Faced with death, that enormous mountain of muscle had become extremely fast.
Hubary looked at his crew and, noticing some men were missing, showed a look of grief but soon recovered. Being pirates, they all knew they would die sooner or later. Everyone knew the risks.
"Change of plans." Hubary said, looking at the town’s harbor, the only spot left untouched after the dragon’s flames. "We will take the two Red Bones ships and recruit a few of their men."
"And Erick?" Harlam asked in a calm tone.
"If he shows up, we kill him. If not, let him be the cannibal of this damned island." Hubary said in an equally calm tone. It was not worth mounting a search over one man. Even if Erick was strong, he was still only human.
Hubary only had to wait for Daemon to recover for the current problems to vanish completely.

Note: I watched the latest episode of House of the Dragon. I would have said that Rhaenyra was foolish to kill the Septons in King’s Landing, but since the Faith of the Seven wasn’t going to support her anyway, I didn’t feel it was a foolish decision.
But revealing House Targaryen’s best-kept secret and declaring herself the Prince Who Was Promised, that had me laughing out loud.
