House of The Dragon:The Rise of the Emperor of the Seven Kingdoms

Chapter 87 - 86 - Storm (II)

"Dracarys!"

Bahamut, soaked by the storm’s rain, did not hesitate upon hearing Maekar’s orders. He opened his mouth, and flames poured from his throat, lighting up the stormy sky in a pale, silver, and gold hue. The platinum dragon kept spewing flames as he flew around the cloud.

A loud, savage roar sounded, and a completely black shadow emerged from the clouds. Only a pair of emerald green eyes shone in the darkness.

Maekar’s face turned cold at the sight of the black dragon. It was none other than Cannibal! The most dangerous living dragon at present!

A shiver ran through Maekar’s body at the thought that this monster had been hiding in the clouds so close to him. He clearly meant to ambush him!

Bahamut let out a roar full of fury and glided through the air as he closed in on Cannibal. The thought that this disgusting rat had dared to fight him was the platinum dragon’s greatest cause for rage.

The platinum dragon raised the claws of his legs and was about to begin a close-range clash in the air. However, something surprising happened. Cannibal dodged Bahamut’s claws with a shockingly stunning agility.

The dragon, visibly smaller than Bahamut, was incredibly agile. He spun through the air and moved his body like a serpent. Maekar thought for a moment he was looking at Caraxes, but the dragon had a build similar to Bahamut’s. A strong chest, a medium-length neck, and a triangular snout.

The cannibal twisted his body again, escaping Bahamut’s bite, and turned his neck at a grotesque angle, opened his mouth, and let black flames pour from the wild dragon’s mouth, striking the platinum dragon’s neck.

Maekar tilted his body to the side and put his arm against his face. Maekar’s face twisted in pain and agony. The scalding heat of the black flames made his skin blister as it burned fiercely.

"ARGHH." A pained groan escaped Maekar’s lips.

Bahamut, sensing the danger to his rider, grew furious. But, instead of retreating, he twisted his body to shield Maekar from the black flames and charged at Cannibal without any hesitation. He seized the black dragon by the claws and opened his enormous mouth.

Cannibal, stunned by Bahamut’s actions, could not dodge in time, and the enemy’s gigantic mouth, full of sharp fangs, struck the wild dragon’s shoulder, at the joint between neck and wing.

The dragon let out a mournful cry as he used the claws of his legs to tear into Bahamut’s chest, leaving great wounds. Blood, hotter than lava, fell from the sky like rain amid the droplets of the storm.

Maekar only felt the world shake when Bahamut managed to collide with Cannibal. He held on to the saddle and breathed heavily as he watched the two giant dragons fight fiercely.

The wounds only spurred Bahamut on further, making him clench his jaw and cruelly tear off a large piece of flesh from the wild dragon’s shoulder. Cannibal let out another cry full of pain and sorrow; he managed to break free from Bahamut and quickly began a free fall, vanishing into the darkness of the stormy night.

Bahamut let out a roar full of fury and rage as he tried to follow his enemy, but after flying for another five minutes, he could no longer locate the black, green-eyed dragon. Cannibal’s coloring was perfect for blending into the night, making it impossible to give chase.

Letting out another roar, this one full of anger and resentment, Bahamut turned his body toward the orange lights that were now closer than ever.

Maekar touched Bahamut’s scales as he breathed heavily. There was a smile on his lips, showing that he was somewhat pleased with his first Dance of Dragons.

However, the price paid was also high. Maekar looked at his hand. Even unable to see much because of the darkness of the night, he could tell that his hand was blackened and covered in blisters. This continued up to his wrists and a bit further. Once he fully recovered, his skin would never return to normal.

"I will hunt you down, you cursed beast," Maekar muttered, exhausted. He was furious over Cannibal’s ambush and attack. He wanted that beast’s skull to decorate his hall at Harrenhal.

Then, Maekar looked ahead and saw a black shadow on a partially lit island. It was not a dragon but a castle with dragon-like features. It was Dragonstone.

Bahamut, wounded, advanced toward it with a slower-than-normal beat of his wings.

The dragon landed on the long staircase leading up to the castle. Suddenly, forty soldiers quickly approached. There were twenty archers and twenty guards. All wore black armor and carried torches to light the long staircase.

Maekar released the belt around his waist and climbed down from the dragon using only one hand. He touched the ground and breathed a sigh of relief. For the first time since he had claimed Bahamut, he felt that the ground could be more pleasant than the skies.

One of the guards, who looked visibly older, approached cautiously with a torch that seemed about to go out at any moment because of the rain.

The torch’s weak light still managed to illuminate the wounds of Bahamut and Maekar. The guard’s face changed drastically, and he shouted, "Help me carry the prince to Maester Ollyr."

Maekar was quickly helped to walk by two guards, but, before going, he looked at the older man and spoke in a calm tone. "Bring ten sheep for Bahamut; he must be starving."

The man nodded and quickly followed the group into the castle. Bahamut looked at Maekar and walked along behind him, knocking loose some stones from the long staircase.

-

Maekar lay naked on a bed while being dried by two servants of Valyrian appearance. His arm was stretched out over a pillow while a middle-aged man skillfully cleaned away the leather of his clothes, stuck to the burns on his hand and wrists.

It was Ollyr, the Maester of Dragonstone. Though he was a rather young maester for such an important post.

"Does it hurt, my prince?" Ollyr asked in a calm tone as he looked seriously at the terrible burns.

"Yes, damn it." Maekar clenched his teeth and spoke in a slightly trembling tone. His hatred for Cannibal only grew with the pain.

"That is good, the damage was not deep, and the prince’s hand has a good chance of recovering." Ollyr seemed relieved by the answer and spoke in a tone full of wisdom.

"Thank you, Maester Ollyr." Although he considered maesters more a band of butchers than physicians, there was no denying the men had their merits.

"Do not thank me; it is only my duty." Ollyr said in a gentle tone as he continued cleaning away the clothing stuck to the burned skin. As each piece of cloth was pulled away, blood and flesh came with it, causing Maekar great pain.

"May I ask which dragon, my prince, you fought against?" Ollyr asked calmly. It was more than obvious there had been a battle between dragons, and the prince had been struck by the enemy dragon’s flames.

"Cannibal," Maekar answered as he closed his eyes. The two servants were cleaning Maekar’s bare body, which helped a little in bearing the pain.

Ollyr paused and showed a look of surprise. He looked at Maekar with admiration and spoke in an emotional tone. "That beast is ferocious, my prince; he was named Cannibal by the people of Dragonstone for devouring his own kind. He is among the oldest and largest of the dragons; he already had a considerable size by the time Vermithor turned one year old."

"Tell the people to report any sighting of the dragon; I will hunt him down," Maekar said in a cold tone.

"Yes, my prince." Ollyr did not try to convince Maekar otherwise. If there was one thing he had learned living in this castle, it was that the Targaryens were incredibly resolute. Once they made a decision, they were hard to change.
