Chapter 79 - 78 - Dārilaros Perzys (II)
"That was a beautiful ceremony, Gael and Maekar." Alysanne approached the newlyweds and spoke in a proud tone full of emotion. She had watched everything with tears in her eyes the entire time. There was no greater joy for a mother than seeing her own daughter be happy beside her husband.
"It was the best feeling of my life, Mother." Gael said, holding both of Alysanne’s hands. Like her mother, her eyes were tearing up.
Alysanne embraced her daughter and whispered in her ear. "I wish you all the happiness in the world, that you always find comfort, courage, and safety when you are with your husband."
Gael sniffled and nodded her head while hugging her mother even tighter.
Jaehaerys approached Maekar; he did not have the cold and indifferent look from before; he seemed more casual. Seeing Maekar love his daughter made him realize that Maekar was different from Maegor, who was a cruel man without feelings.
Of course, it was only a little; the animosity still existed. Maekar wanting the throne was something that deeply displeased Jaehaerys. However, since it was the happiest day of his daughter’s life, the king showed no negative feelings.
"You had better take care of her and protect her; otherwise, wait for me in hell so we can settle the score once and for all." Jaehaerys was direct and threatened Maekar with a calm look.
Surprisingly, Maekar was not sarcastic or ironic; he showed a solemn expression and promised with a determined look. "Don’t worry, I will give my life to protect her. I will bring fire and blood to anyone who dares even touch a single hair of hers."
Jaehaerys was surprised and looked at Maekar with a complex look, but, as a king and an arrogant person, he just scoffed and spoke in a cold tone. "Be a good man and husband."
Without waiting for a reply, Jaehaerys looked at his daughter and hesitated to approach; he knew better than anyone that he had hurt his daughter. If he were Gael, he might never want to look at his face again.
As Jaehaerys was about to leave, he heard Gael’s voice.
"Father!"
Turning around, Jaehaerys only had time to see a silver blonde blur in the air before being tightly embraced.
"I still love you, no matter what happens, and I will still love you." With her face against Jaehaerys’s chest, Gael spoke in a trembling tone, like a child who had just done something wrong.
Jaehaerys could not help but feel stunned as he looked at Gael with a guilty look full of warm and loving feelings. He hesitated for a moment and finally stroked Gael’s hair.
"You are now a married woman; fulfill your duties, and if Maekar ever dares to harm you, tell me, and I will give him as a snack to Vermithor." Jaehaerys said in a soft and gentle tone, completely different from the expression he had spoken to Maekar with.
"If he does that, I will personally give him a few punches myself." Gael pulled away from her father’s chest and said, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes, with a smile.
Jaehaerys showed a stunned look again. He could not believe that this beautiful woman, brave and happy before him, was the same small and shy girl who used to run after him years ago.
Letting out a sigh, Jaehaerys gently kissed Gael’s forehead and spoke in a gentle tone. "I bless this marriage."
Gael, who had just wiped away her tears, looked at her father in disbelief and showed a big smile. "Thank you, Father."
Jaehaerys did not answer Gael and turned around, leaving the garden, but, looking at his back, he seemed much lighter than before.
"If you forgive him so easily, he’ll think he can manipulate you however he wants." Alysanne said to Gael, who just shook her head.
"I don’t like holding grudges, especially knowing we could die at any moment." Gael said in a soft tone. After losing so many brothers and sisters, she had truly learned to never hold grudges against people, especially her own family.
"You are a good woman, Gael." Alysanne said in an emotional tone and then spoke in a tone full of helplessness. "But remember that kindness in this world is often repaid with death."
Gael nodded her head; she was not stupid. She knew some people were not even worthy of breathing the same air as other people.
While Gael and Alysanne talked, Maekar was standing beside Borros Baratheon, Gwayne Hightower, and Harwin Strong.
"Your wedding was... exotic, my prince." Borros said with a somewhat forced laugh.
He could not help feeling a chill remembering Maekar and Gael drinking their own blood. For House Targaryen, it might have been a beautiful ceremony, but, in the eyes of Borros and many of those present, it was something bizarre and even profane.
"You’re lucky Orys Baratheon didn’t follow Valyrian customs, or you would have to have a similar wedding." Maekar said to Borros with a provoking look.
Borros’s face went pale at those words. He could not help but thank his ancestor for leaving the darkness and joining the light, the civilized world of Westeros.
Compared to Borros, Harwin and Gwayne were surprisingly calm and did not seem bothered, especially Gwayne, who was a member of House Hightower, a house sincerely devoted to the Faith of the Seven.
"You seem calmer than expected, Gwayne," Maekar said in a curious tone.
"Don’t think we’re fanatics, my prince," Gwayne said with a smile. "Faith is simply House Hightower’s greatest weapon, but we don’t let it control us."
Maekar smiled and liked Gwayne’s words. Faith truly was the greatest weapon for controlling the masses. Although it was a double-edged sword. If there was no king capable of controlling that sword and pointing it correctly at the enemy, the sword could hurt itself.
"By the way, didn’t your father complain about you being too close to me?" Maekar said with a smile, looking at Borros. It was truly strange for Borros to be at his side when Borros’s father, Boremund, was the greatest supporter of Rhaenys’s son, Laenor.
"That old man thinks he can control me." Borros spoke in a sarcastic tone, mentioning his father. He looked at Rhaenys, not far away, and spoke in a tone full of irony. "I never supported Rhaenys, much less that brat."
Borros did not believe Rhaenys could be a good queen, much less her son, who played with dolls like a girl.
"Besides, he never forbade me from staying by your side." Borros said, showing a mysterious smile. "After all, you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. Who knows, an accident might happen?"
Maekar smiled even more. He liked this pragmatism of Boremund’s; the man knew he could bet on both sides. Either way, he could win if one side won.
As for why Boremund preferred Maekar over Viserys, the reason was somewhat simple. Boremund, like all Baratheons, was a man who respected strength. Viserys might be popular for being a great host at parties and banquets, but he was never truly a powerful warrior, much less had a warrior’s reputation.
By comparison, Maekar was everything Boremund wanted in a king. Along with the friendship between Borros and Maekar, he thought it a good idea for his son to stand by Maekar’s side instead of Viserys, whom he considered weak and incompetent.
"The Black Rose is approaching," Suddenly, Harwin said in a hurried tone, and everyone saw a beautiful woman in a blue dress approaching.
Maekar had to admit Jocelyn was truly beautiful. Aemon was a lucky man. Rhaenys had definitely inherited her mother’s beauty.
"My prince," Jocelyn greeted Maekar in a respectful tone.
Harwin, Borros, and Gwayne took the cue and left the two of them alone. Anyone could see Jocelyn wanted to have a serious conversation.
"Lady Jocelyn," Maekar greeted the woman back with a happy smile. He was truly happy; it was his wedding. At the same time, he could not help noticing the woman was incredibly tall. She stood at 1.87 m (6’2"). Taller than countless men.
"I’ll be direct, my prince." Jocelyn was not an ordinary woman; she looked at Maekar and spoke in a calm tone...
"I would like Laenor to become your squire."
