Chapter 67 - 66 - Conspiracies (4)
"Mira, I’ll leave this in your hands; you may go." Maekar looked at the small figure wrapped in black robes, wearing a crimson mask.
"Yes, my prince." The voice that came from behind the mask was feminine and surprisingly mature.
But Mira didn’t leave after answering; she remained standing still, as though hesitating to say something.
This caught the attention of everyone present, including Maekar.
"Did something happen?" Maekar asked in a calm tone; he narrowed his eyes and looked at the small figure before him with a touch of curiosity and scrutiny.
"After Administrator Wilson interrogated the Faceless Assassin in search of the techniques of the House of Black and White, we found traces of rape on the prisoner’s body." Mira replied in a calm tone, though the implications of her words were clear.
Maekar’s eyes turned cold; he turned the ring on his finger and stroked the metal a few times with his thumb.
The atmosphere had changed completely.
"It seems Wilson got carried away with the power I gave him and forgot that we are human beings, not animals." Maekar murmured in a calm tone, though the coldness in his voice was felt by everyone around him.
"Executor," Maekar spoke at that moment.
The leader of the assassins rose and struck his fist against his chest while bringing his legs together in one swift motion. "I await your orders, my prince."
"You are ordered to seize Administrator Wilson at the base in King’s Landing and kill him before the eyes of every member of the organization," Maekar said in a calm, cold tone. "Another administrator will take Wilson’s place."
"Remember to make him beg for death, and when he begs, do not kill him easily." Maekar said in a chilling, cold tone.
Maekar was no hypocrite who thought himself a saint. He was an assassin and never denied it, but he was also no mindless animal. He despised anything related to rape or anything involving children. He didn’t even consider such people human beings.
"Mira, if you waste my time over trash like this again, you may find yourself in the Penitence Room." Maekar looked at the small figure wrapped in black robes and spoke in an even colder tone.
"Yes, my prince." Mira lowered her head and answered in a sorrowful tone. She knew she had done something wrong by not killing Wilson before reporting to Maekar.
Seeing her fall silent, Maekar spoke in a calm tone. "Strengthen security around Gael and Alysanne. I want to return to Dorne knowing they will be safe."
"Yes, my prince." Mira answered in a solemn tone.
"Leave me alone." Maekar said in a calm tone.
Everyone left the room in silence, leaving Maekar alone in the chamber.
The prince frowned and felt that recruiting people whose mindset and character were already formed was something he didn’t want to do again. One of the reasons the Children of the Blood were so obedient was the brainwashing they had undergone when young.
The hope of a better world.
There was nothing better for controlling villains than making them believe they were heroes. Wasn’t that how every tyrant, despot, and emperor had done it for millennia? Of course, Maekar wasn’t lying when he said he wanted to change the world. It was a different world from the utopia they believed in, but it was a better world.
"It’s better to cut away the rotten flesh from a body than to wait for the disease to spread." Maekar murmured, looking at the flames of the torches around him.
"What a hassle." A sigh sounded through the room.
The next day.
Daemon walked through the halls of Harrenhal and felt that the looks from the people around him were full of fear and also pure hesitation. He even saw some lords he had tried to win over the day before pulling back with hesitation and a touch of fear.
Just as he was about to ask what was going on, he saw Rhaenys coming down the steps of the long staircase. Her expression was cold, but her gaze showed anger.
Noticing his presence, Rhaenys approached and came extremely close to Daemon.
"You could have waited at least a week." Rhaenys said in a cold tone. "But it seems you have no scruples at all, Daemon."
"I don’t know what you’re talking about, Rhaenys." Daemon replied in an equally cold tone. He didn’t like Rhaenys’s tone.
"Playing innocent?" Rhaenys let out a sarcastic laugh. "That isn’t like you, Daemon."
With that, Rhaenys walked away, her footsteps echoing through the halls of the black stone castle, leaving Daemon utterly bewildered. What was going on? Did I kill someone and forget? But how is that even possible?
Suddenly, something occurred to him and Daemon’s expression changed drastically. He quickly moved forward, and as he turned the corner, he found himself before a crowd of people staring at the space ahead in shock, whispering among themselves.
Noticing his arrival, everyone made way while staring at Daemon with skepticism and suspicion. After ignoring their looks, Daemon saw the reason for the fear that had been building since he arrived at the castle.
Before him lay twenty bodies on the ground, all with their throats cut. A great pool of dried blood could be seen on the floor, nearly covering the entire corridor. Flies hovered in the air and over the corpses.
However, it wasn’t the gruesome scene that gave Daemon a bad feeling, but what was inside the room. The Rogue Prince ignored the bodies in the corridor and walked into the room with a calm, cold expression.
Inside the room, Daemon recognized Lord Robert Redwyne and Lord Boremund Baratheon. Besides them, there were a dozen important lords from the Stormlands and the Reach. All gathered around the bed.
At that moment, everyone turned their heads and stared at Daemon, who had just arrived. Their expressions were far from welcoming; many looked at Daemon with hostility and anger.
"You dare set foot in this room!?" Boremund asked in an extremely irritated tone. Others might fear Daemon, but he did not.
Daemon looked at Matthos Tyrell’s body on the bed and understood what was happening. They were conspiring against him to strike at Viserys.
Whether it was Boremund himself or Maekar, none of that mattered at this moment. Daemon knew the blame would fall on him, especially after his public argument with Matthos. The worst part was that he had genuinely wanted to kill Matthos, but he had wanted to pin the blame on Maekar.
Unfortunately, someone else had already taken the initiative before him and pinned the blame on him instead.
"I didn’t kill him." Daemon said in an arrogant, scornful tone. Regardless of the accusations, Daemon had to deny it until the very last moment. Staying silent wasn’t an option, since silence would only make him look guiltier in everyone’s eyes.
"Every criminal says that." Boremund didn’t believe Daemon’s words. Daemon’s explosive, unhinged temperament was common knowledge. Daemon wasn’t called the Rogue Prince for stealing a few flowers, but for being unpredictable, for not following orders, and for being cruel.
"Watch your words, Boremund." Daemon said in a cold tone; his arrogant temper surfaced in that moment. "I am not a man who enjoys being falsely accused. I will cut out your tongue if you continue."
"If you think you’ll intimidate me with a few words, you’re mistaken, Rogue Prince." Boremund said, picking up his war hammer. "When I was fighting on the battlefield, you were still in your father’s balls."
Robert Redwyne, who was a friend of Matthos, didn’t hesitate and drew his sword. He stood beside Boremund and looked coldly at Daemon.
Suddenly, a solemn voice rang out.
"My dear lords, if I recall, you are my guests."
"Will you break the sacred right of the guest?"
Everyone turned to look at Maekar, who had just arrived, accompanied by Clarisse.
