Chapter 62 - 61 - Surprising News (3)
Mara and Clarisse could be seen wearing trousers and form-fitting clothing. Both had their hair pulled back in a ponytail.
"Don’t be afraid; he’s gentle," Maekar said with a smile while stroking the beautiful scales on Bahamut’s face.
Looking at the enormous dragon and remembering how it had devoured dozens of assassins, Clarisse felt that the word "gentle" could not be associated with this particular dragon.
Ignoring Maekar’s teasing, Mara looked at him and asked in a solemn tone. "Are you sure you want to take me? This could cause our plans to fail, especially if your brother comes to Dorne and negotiates with the Dornish Lords."
"That’s possible." Maekar didn’t deny it. "However, whether it’s Viserys or Jaehaerys, neither of them will accept the conditions I told you and the Lords of Dorne."
Showing a smile, Maekar added with a calm look. "Twenty years of tax exemption is something even Jaehaerys cannot accept. He would rather have Dorne stay outside the Seven Kingdoms than let that happen."
"So you lied to me?" Mara asked, raising an eyebrow. "That was very rude of you, my dear prince."
Maekar simply shrugged; he didn’t deny that he had lied to get Mara’s attention and keep her from even starting the negotiations. "Although twenty years is impossible, I don’t mind giving ten years of tax exemption. That will be enough to satisfy Dorne’s greed."
Mara fell silent. She was angry over Maekar’s lie, but thinking about what he had done to save her life, her anger vanished as if it had never existed. "I really want to punch you in the face."
"Look on the bright side, at least you’re the first Dornish woman to ride a dragon, and I didn’t lie about the other conditions." Maekar replied with a smile.
Mara let out a dissatisfied huff but didn’t press the matter. Without Maekar, she would die. In the end, ten or twenty made no difference to her, since she could only survive with his help.
"I just hope Harrenhal is as magnificent as they say." Mara sighed and spoke with a helpless tone, though there was a curious look in her eyes. As someone who had never been allowed to leave the castle her entire life, she had an intrinsic curiosity.
"Well, you’ll be impressed; Harren the Black was mad and built a castle for giants." Maekar said with a smile. He had of course already seen Harrenhal; he lived in the Riverlands and had traveled to Castle Darry a few times, taking the opportunity to visit Harrenhal.
The castle was naturally magnificent, even partially melted. The best part was that it was located almost at the center of the continent, serving nearly perfectly as a preferred stronghold from which to reach every corner of Westeros.
"By the way, aren’t you worried my uncle will take Sunspear?" Mara asked with a touch of curiosity.
"I’m the one who should be asking you that." Maekar replied in a calm tone.
"In the end, it all comes down to who has the greater power. Harren the Black died cooking alive in the largest and most powerful castle on this continent. If my uncle thinks Sunspear is more powerful than Harrenhal, he’s welcome to try."
"Let’s go up, I want to arrive in less than a week." Maekar said as he climbed the iron chains and reinforced ropes.
(Note: Do you think it’s reasonable to travel from Sunspear in Dorne to Harrenhal in the Riverlands in four days?)
Mara and Clarisse took a deep breath and began to climb, following Maekar. Clarisse in particular seemed more nervous than Mara, which was understandable given her fear of heights.
The saddle fit three people, especially with two slender women, though Mara had a full chest that made Clarisse feel inferior.
Seated with two beautiful women, Maekar wondered if Gael would get jealous and, after thinking about it, he knew his future wife would go mad with jealousy.
He let out a laugh and tightened the belt around all three of them, then tapped Bahamut’s neck twice.
The dragon understood what his rider wanted and lifted off the ground to Mara’s excited cry. The dragon shook his body to rid himself of the sand.
Mara’s heart was beating extremely fast. Looking at the enormous neck moving from side to side and the height she was at that moment, she felt more powerful than ever, even knowing that power wasn’t hers.
Bahamut began to move and pick up speed; his enormous legs sank into the ground below and he took flight with a powerful beat of his wings.
"This is incredible, Maekar!" As the dragon gained altitude, Mara screamed while her face was distorted by the wind.
"Close your mouth or you’ll swallow sand." Clarisse couldn’t help but shout in Mara’s ear, and she quickly closed her mouth, though her eyes stayed wide open as she looked around with extreme curiosity.
How many people had ever had the pleasure of seeing such a spectacular view in their lifetime?
Maekar smiled at Mara’s excitement and flew toward the Riverlands.
-
King’s Landing.
Alysanne looked at the letter in her hands and felt them trembling as she held the paper. Setting Saera aside, Gael was her only daughter; the little girl who used to hide behind her legs when she felt shy was now going to be a mother.
Alysanne smiled gently; she tucked the letter away as though it were something extremely precious. She would be by her daughter’s side, no matter what. In that moment, the queen felt a strength course through her body.
It was her willpower, and nothing would stop her from going to the Riverlands, not even her frail bones.
The queen walked to her wardrobe with a solemn look. She opened the doors and pulled out a set of clothes from the very back.
It was a typical riding outfit, or rather, a dragon-riding outfit. It was entirely silver with red trim.
Without any hesitation, Alysanne undressed and put on the clothes she hadn’t worn in years, not since she had grown old.
About an hour later, Alysanne could be seen at the Dragonpit. She wore an elegant bun and walked without her crutch.
Looking at the eldest Dragonkeeper of the Dragonpit, Alysanne spoke in a calm tone. "Saddle Silverwing, I’m going to fly."
The old man, wearing black armor with scales on the back, looked at the queen in shock, but bowed and quickly left.
Some time later, a silver dragon emerged from the pit, a beautiful and elegant creature, just like her rider. There was a dark saddle on the dragon’s back, secured to her chest by thick, reinforced ropes.
It was Silverwing, Alysanne’s dragon.
Silverwing let out a low rumble and approached Alysanne, gently pressing her snout against her body.
Alysanne couldn’t help but embrace the one she considered a sister, the one she had trusted with her life many times. Her refuge through the decades. They were sisters, in everything but blood.
"We’ll fly together again, my daughter needs me." Alysanne murmured and, with the help of a ladder brought by the Dragonkeepers, she climbed into the saddle after nearly a decade without doing so.
Fastening the belt around her waist, she took the reins attached to the wooden supports of the saddle. Without even needing a command, Silverwing lifted off the ground. The beautiful silver dragon began to run and took flight smoothly and gracefully.
Entirely different from the majesty of Vhagar, the brutality of Vermithor, or the ferocity of Bahamut.
Silverwing let out a roar and soared over the city for a time.
The older inhabitants quickly recognized the beautiful silver dragon and bowed, especially the women, showing just how beloved Jaehaerys and Alysanne were throughout the realm.
Jaehaerys watched the beautiful dragon disappear from his field of vision with a nostalgic and loving gaze. He truly loved that stubborn, proud woman. He would die for her without a moment’s hesitation.
Letting out a sigh, Jaehaerys looked once more at the dragon that had already vanished and wondered what had happened to make Alysanne ride Silverwing after so long, something that worried him. Alysanne was no longer young, and riding a dragon was tiring work.
"Send a raven to Harrenhal and ask what’s going on." Jaehaerys ordered Ryam in a calm tone.
"Yes, my king." Ryam replied respectfully.
Before Ryam could leave, he heard the king’s voice once more.
"Also ask whether Alysanne arrived safely and well."
Ryam smiled and left in silence, leaving Jaehaerys looking out at King’s Landing from the window of his chambers.
