House of The Dragon:The Rise of the Emperor of the Seven Kingdoms

Chapter 45 - 44 - The Sand Princess and the Pale Prince. (1)

"My prince, do I have to ride the dragon?" Clarisse asked in a hesitant tone full of despair. Humans were born on the ground; not everyone was happy with the idea of flying on a giant dragon.

"As my future Lady Commander of the Kingsguard, you must accompany me to Sunspear," Maekar said with a smile on his lips. Seeing this powerful and confident knight feel afraid of the sky was quite interesting.

Clarisse resigned herself to her fate and climbed the steel chains and thick ropes, and with an agile movement, sat in the saddle in front of Maekar. The prince fastened the belt around them both and tightened it firmly, making their bodies practically pressed together.

If it were another woman, she might have felt embarrassed, but Clarisse did not react much to their proximity. Before being a woman, she was a knight.

Davos looked at the scene and contorted his lips. His niece had been abducted by a prince who was not yet king. He was not happy about Starfall being inherited by him. He had trained his niece to not have the responsibilities of a lord, but now he felt that fate was truly cruel.

"Clara, she really is your daughter; she was abducted by an empty promise from someone she just met..." Davos murmured with a trace of helplessness and amusement in his expression. Clarisse was just like her mother, just as impulsive.

"Davos, return to Starfall and march with my army and vassals to Sunspear; I must assist Princess Mara." From atop the dragon, Clarisse shouted to Davos, who only nodded.

Now that Clarisse had taken a side, they had an obligation to support Mara’s claim. Before, Clarisse certainly would not have dared to fight all the Noble Houses of Dorne that supported Mors instead of Princess Mara, but now it was different; she had a dragonrider riding an adult dragon assisting her!

Her five thousand soldiers would be of great help in controlling Sunspear at some point.

Maekar smiled seeing Clarisse so determined. The young woman was truly bold for offering everything she had when she swore loyalty to him. Iskandar’s Rank A Charisma was so potent it startled him sometimes. He wondered what it would be like to have the charisma of the gods.

Creating a kingdom or an empire would be as easy as baking a cake; he would only need to stand still and receive the adoration of the people while everyone gathered around him. It was simply irrational.

"Let’s go, Bahamut." Patting the dragon’s neck, Maekar spoke with a smile while holding the saddle’s handrests, which Clarisse did as well.

Bahamut rose from the ground, far surpassing the surrounding trees. It shook its body to throw off dust and moved. The earth beneath it sank as its enormous body moved with surprising ease.

It took a few steps forward and took flight. Clarisse only felt a great jolt and her body was thrown back, only saved from falling by the belt around her.

Looking down, she saw the oasis getting smaller and smaller and the people becoming as tiny as ants.

There was only one thought in her mind at that moment.

’Have humans really managed to tame such power?’

If one dragon was so strong, the Valyrian Empire had hundreds; who could fight against such a powerful country?

"How do you feel?" Maekar asked with a smile. The strong wind muffled his voice, so he had to lean close to her ear and ask.

"Dreadful. I prefer having my feet knowing they are touching the ground," Clarisse said with a slightly trembling tone.

Maekar wanted to laugh, but he didn’t mock Clarisse’s fear of heights; the woman was clearly trying not to tremble too much. However, it was still admirable that she tried, even knowing she was afraid of heights.

"You are incredible; usually, people don’t even want to climb onto a dragon," Maekar said sincerely.

Clarisse just laughed nervously. Who in their right mind wanted to climb onto a monster like this?

Sunspear is a walled settlement, protected by three massive Winding Walls that encircle each other and contain miles of narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and noisy bazaars. The Triple Gate, where the gates are aligned one behind the other, bypasses the labyrinth, allowing instead direct passage via a brick path to the Old Palace.

One of the main structures of Sunspear is the original stronghold of House Martell, the Sandship, which is a large, ugly, brown building shaped like a dromond.

Over time, Rhoynish-style towers sprang up around the fortress. Two other main structures are the tall and slender Spear Tower and the large, domed Tower of the Sun. The Spear Tower is a hundred and fifty feet high and can house noble prisoners. These two towers are the first things visitors see when arriving at Sunspear, whether by land or sea.

At this moment, on one of the three walls—the first, to be exact—guards looked in every possible direction.

Suddenly, a visually younger guard noticed something approaching from the sky and narrowed his eyes. Under the heat of the sun, the air seemed distorted, but the black speck gradually grew larger and the young guard could see what it really was.

The youth turned pale and felt his legs tremble, but he looked at the bell beside him and did not hesitate to pull the rope, and the bell reverberated throughout the city.

"DRAGONNNNN!!!!" he shouted at the top of his lungs.

The atmosphere fell silent for a moment, as if everyone were processing what they had just heard, but soon they moved quickly.

"Dragon!!!!"

"Dragon!!!!"

"Dragon!!!!"

While they were still manning the Scorpions—the same weapons that had managed to kill Meraxes—the gigantic dragon was already flying over the Old Palace.

The guards noticed it didn’t rain fire, but the dragon circled over the castle in the air. Then, everyone realized it wasn’t an enemy, but a visit from House Targaryen. However, no one left their posts; everyone looked nervously at the gigantic dragon in the air.

The history of Aegon, riding Balerion the Black Dread, burning Dorne for two years, was no joke to be played with. If Jaehaerys had Aegon’s balls, he would have done the same to Oldtown after the Faith of the Seven’s assassination attempt against Alysanne.

Seeing they had calmed down, Maekar had Bahamut head toward the city exit and landed outside the city.

Fifteen minutes later, the gates of Sunspear opened and a dozen Dornish knights approached, led by a tall man in yellow scale armor. He was about forty years old, with a lush beard around his face and a hard, calm expression. He had short black hair, but with sprinkles of gray.

"Prince Maekar, I am the Captain of Princess Mara’s Guard, Jorah of House Vaith," the man said, leading the Dornish guards. "My princess said you will be treated as a guest according to the ancient laws."

Maekar’s lips curved into a smile and he replied, "And I accept being a guest; I swear I will respect the laws of the host."

Jorah showed a calm expression and nodded, but his eyes fell on the young woman beside Maekar. He recognized her as Lady Clarisse of House Dayne, the newest Sword of the Morning.

Although he was curious how these two were together, he did not ask and ordered one of the guards to bring the prepared horse.

Since there was only one horse, Maekar shared it with Clarisse. Bahamut remained lying outside the city, looking comfortable in the heat.
