Chapter 77: behind you
Chapter 77: behind you
Vivian’s POVDid they seriously believe I had something to do with the attack on Lily’s pack?
The moment the thought crossed my mind, my stomach twisted. I guess their security wasn’t as sloppy as I’d assumed, picking up on the fact that some random girl showed up, stayed briefly, then vanished the same day their alpha was murdered. Perfect. Now I was probably considered a fugitive.
Did Zaliver know about this?
I shifted uncomfortably under their stares, but my mom turned to my dad instead.
"So, you didn’t know?" she asked him softly.
I was too stunned to speak, let alone lie. I just shook my head slowly, eyes fixed on some random spot on the wall. My mind was racing, and I felt pale, sick even, like someone had scooped out my insides and replaced them with ice.
"Oh, but how did you get past the other patrols? Not everyone’s been told to look for you. You’re somewhat a suspect, but someone high up made sure you’re not actively pursued." Her words carried both concern and suspicion. "Still, there are plenty of wolves out searching, enough to notice if you crossed any borders."
My father leaned forward, voice edged with frustration.
So Zaliver did know. That manipulative Alpha. Of course he’d pulled strings behind the scenes, made sure I wasn’t hunted, and still hadn’t told me. My jaw clenched.
My mom’s eyes darted around the room. I could feel her unease, like her instincts were warning her of something she couldn’t name. But I was too caught up in the storm inside me to focus on it.
It hurt more than I expected, the idea that people assumed I was part of the slaughter. And maybe, in some twisted way, I was. Not with my hands, but I’d been part of the chain of events that led there.
"Vivian," my dad started, voice firm but quieter than before. "We don’t believe that garbage anymore. But we need answers. What’s really going on? Is this your mate’s doing? Did he orchestrate that attack? Why were you missing? Are you even sure he’s really your mate?"
That last question hit like a slap.
My head snapped up. "No, what? No. He is my mate," I said, voice cracking on the last word. "Don’t say that. He’s mine."
That possessive edge that surfaced whenever Zaliver talked about the bond, I finally understood it. Just having my own father question it made something primal rise up inside me, defensive and fierce, vibrating just under my skin.
