Max Level Reincarnation: Retrieve My Primordials

Chapter 43: The Fundamental Law of Frost

Chapter 43: The Fundamental Law of Frost

Aurelia held the ancient parchment scroll with trembling hands, slowly unrolling its crisp, weathered edges.

She expected to see lines of neat, elegant handwriting or intricate magic circles drawn in dark ink. Instead, her eyes met a chaotic blur of strange, squiggly scribbles. The symbols didn't resemble any language taught in the Kingdom of Smaragdus they looked like erratic, jagged scratches made by an unsteadied hand.

"What is this...?" Aurelia narrowed her big brown eyes, leaning closer to inspect the strange markings under the dim light of the alley. "How am I supposed to read a spell if I can't even recognize the letters?"

As she focused her gaze on the center of the scroll, something incomprehensible occurred.

The dark ink on the page began to twitch.

Aurelia gasped, her breath catching in her throat. The squiggly lines weren't painted onto the parchment at all they were alive! The black scribblings began to vibrate violently, writhing across the paper like captured serpents fighting to break free from their wooden cage.

HUMMMMMM...

Before Aurelia could drop the scroll in panic, the scribbles exploded off the parchment!

The ink detached itself completely from the paper, hovering in the open air directly in front of Aurelia's face. The black markings transformed into glowing, ethereal threads of silver and sapphire light, floating silently in a mesmerizing, swirling constellation.

"Eh...?" Aurelia’s eyes widened in sheer bewilderment.

She stood frozen as the floating silver runes spun faster and faster, forming a radiant sphere of light. Then, before she could even blink, the entire cluster of luminous symbols shot forward, diving straight into the center of her forehead!

FLASH!

"Ghkk...!"

A heavy, breathless sensation washed over Aurelia's mind. It didn't hurt there was no physical impact or tearing of flesh but an overwhelming torrent of ancient, concentrated knowledge poured directly into her neural pathways.

The dark, dirty alleyway instantly vanished from her senses.

Aurelia opened her eyes, only to find herself floating in a vast, infinite cosmos.

There was no floor beneath her feet, no sky above her head, and no dirty brick walls surrounding her. She was suspended in a breathtaking sea of midnight blue and deep purple space. All around her, millions of tiny, brilliant white specs of light sparkled against the dark void.

"Am I... in space?" Aurelia whispered, her small voice floating through the silent cosmos. "Are those... stars?"

As she questioned her surroundings, the distant white stars began to drift toward her. Slow at first, then accelerating into a beautiful, gentle stream of illumination. They didn't burn with scorching heat; instead, they radiated a soothing, crisp coolness that made her skin tingle with delight.

One particularly bright spec of light drifted directly toward her outstretched palm. Aurelia reached out instinctively, cupping her small hand to catch it.

"So beautiful..." she breathed in awe.

Up close, the light wasn't a round star at all. It was a perfect, intricate, six-pointed crystal a microscopic snowflake shape crafted from pure, shimmering starlight. The moment the stellar crystal rested upon her skin, it dissolved into a cloud of glowing, diamond-like dust.

The dust swirled around her arms, waist, and shoulders, wrapping her frail body in a vortex of cosmic frost.

It tickled her skin, sending pleasant goosebumps rippling across her arms. But beneath the playful surface, a profound transformation was taking place. Guided by the newly formed [Null Orb] resting inside her chest, the cosmic frost dust began altering her magical affinity at a cellular level.

The orb acted as an absolute catalyst, digesting the abstract starlight knowledge and transcribing the core concepts directly into her brain. It wasn't just teaching her a routine recited from a textbook; it was engraving the absolute, fundamental laws of cold, moisture, and thermodynamic manipulation directly into her soul.

I understand... Aurelia thought, a profound wave of enlightenment washing through her consciousness. I see how it works now!

GASSSSSPP!

Aurelia’s eyes snapped open as she was yanked violently back into reality.

She stumbled back half a step, her boots hitting the dusty cobblestones of the dry alleyway. Her chest heaved as she took in deep, ragged gulps of warm air. The cosmic void filled with millions of stars had vanished, but the astounding clarity in her mind remained crystal clear.

She looked to her side. Her older brother, Sigrid, was still standing completely motionless, his hand gripping the black obsidian cube, his mind trapped inside the temporal training dimension.

"Haah..." Aurelia let out a sigh of relief, resting a palm over her racing heart. "I... I think I made it back safely."

As her vision settled, a strand of her own hair drifted across her shoulder. Aurelia blinked, reaching down to grab the lock of hair.

Her brown hair was no longer entirely brown. Starting from her left temple down to the tips of her shoulder-length locks, half of her hair had transformed into a brilliant, pearlescent snow-white glowing faintly with a subtle, icy sheen.

Yet, the change in her hair was nothing compared to the staggering wealth of knowledge pulsing inside her head.

"I thought... I thought that scroll would only teach me a single basic spell," Aurelia murmured, staring at her open hands with newfound reverence. "But it didn't just give me a spell. The orb unlocked the absolute fundamentals of ice itself! I... I can create and mold any variation of ice I want!"

Eager to test her new capabilities, Aurelia took six careful steps away from Sigrid, making sure to place a safe distance between herself and her frozen brother so she wouldn't accidentally put him in harm's way.

She closed her eyes, tapping into the newly awakened reservoir of mana inside her chest.

Ice isn't just born out of nowhere, Aurelia analyzed internally, her reconstructed mind processing the physics of magic with effortless grace. Ice is created by the rapid removal of heat. And even in this dry, dusty alley, there are microscopic particles of moisture floating in the air. If I use my mana to pull that moisture together... and strip away the heat...

Aurelia raised her right hand, spreading her fingers wide as she focused her mental intent upon her open palm.

CRACKLE!

The warm air above her palm instantly turned crisp and freezing. Tiny droplets of invisible humidity condensed rapidly, forming glittering white frost in mid-air. In less than two seconds, a sleek, three-foot-long spear of solid, blue-tinted ice materialized above her palm, radiating a thick plume of freezing white mist!

"Woah... haha! It actually worked!" Aurelia giggled softly, her eyes sparkling with pure, childlike wonder.

She flexed her fingers inward, visualizing the reversal of the process. Disperse.

SHIVER...

The sharp ice spear instantly fractured, dissolving back into a harmless cloud of glittering diamond dust that drifted harmlessly onto the dirt.

Filled with excitement, Aurelia decided to try a broader experiment. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and expanded her mana field outward across the ground, attempting to control the ambient temperature of her immediate environment.

"Lower..." she whispered.

WHOOOOOOSH!

A sharp, localized drop in temperature erupted in a circle around her!

The warm, soot-choked air of the alley plummeted into sub-zero temperatures within a fraction of a second. Beautiful, intricate patterns of crystal frost bloomed across the dirty red-brick walls. The hard cobblestones beneath her boots glazed over with a smooth, shimmering layer of white rime.

Aurelia opened her eyes, gasping in delight as she looked around her sparkling, frozen environment. "I can manipulate the temperature so easily...!"

She spun around, eager to check how far her spell had reached and her heart immediately stopped.

"Oops! Brother!"

The frost had spread far beyond what she had intended! A thick layer of glittering icy dust had crept up Sigrid's boots, glazing over his worn coat and dusting his hair in brilliant white frost!

"Eek! I forgot!"

Aurelia panicked, immediately rushing toward him. But in her haste, she forgot to turn off her ambient mana output! With every quick step she took, her boots emitted a trail of sharp, freezing frost across the ground, leaving a path of ice behind her!

"No, no, no! Calm down, Aurelia!" she scolded herself, stopping mid-stride.

She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and forced her fluttering heart to steady. She visualized the thermal energy returning to the air, commanding the ambient mana to absorb the cold and restore warmth to the alleyway.

HUMMM...

Slowly, the biting cold faded. The ambient temperature returned to its normal, dry warmth. The white frost trailing from her boots melted away into faint wisps of steam, and the ice glazing the brick walls dissolved harmlessly.

Relieved, Aurelia rushed over to Sigrid's side. She raised her small hands, carefully wiping away the icy dust covering his shoulders, coat, and hair.

"That was so reckless of me..." she muttered, softly pouting at her own foolishness as she tidied his clothes.

Once Sigrid was completely clean of frost, Aurelia lowered her hands. She looked up at his frozen, unblinking face his steady breathing the only proof that his soul was still fighting somewhere far away.

Aurelia reached out, wrapping both of her hands tightly around his left arm. She leaned her head gently against his shoulder, her pearlescent white strand of hair mingling with his.

"Brother..." Aurelia whispered, her voice filled with an unyielding, unbreakable resolve. "I've gained the power to keep us alive now. I won't ever let anyone hurt us again... and I won't let you carry everything on your shoulders."

She tightened her grip on his coat, closing her eyes as she stood faithfully by his side.

"Please come back safely, Sigrid. I'll be right here waiting for you."
