Chapter 118: The price of peace
"Get the fuck out of my way."
"I cannot do that, Prince Damon." The captain said for the third time.
"The next person who puts his hands on me will lose it." Damon stared them down with Cassian standing right beside me.
"I am sorry but by the Alpha’s orders, Prince Ares is confined to his quarters and is not to be seen by anyone."
"Move" Cassian barked. "I want to speak to my brother."
The captain did not flinch.
Our orders are to not do that even under the threat of death. I am sorry."
Damon stared then he laughed.
"This cannot be happening." He turned on his heels and began walking.
"Where are you going?" Cassian called.
"To speak with our father." Damon did not slow. "You coming?"
Cassian looked at back at the guards then followed.
Damon shoved the study door open, already speaking before he even entered the room.
"You cannot possibly be keeping Ares prisoner while..."
"When did it become a thing to walk in without announcing yourselves?" Kieran cut in.
"We are sorry, father." Cassian stepped past Damon. "But Damon is right. You cannot keep Ares confined."
"Can I not?"
"Father" Cassian’s voice rose. "He has a theory. He believes Soren has taken Ayla and is headed to the rogue king’s camp to seek asylum. We need to stop him before he crosses the border..."
"He has already crossed." Alpha Kieran revealed.
"What?"
"Soren crossed the border last night." he set down the quill in his hand. "News reached me before Ares walked into the council room. The border patrol were unable to stop him but he was not with Ayla."
"What do you mean he wasn’t with her? She is missing and has been since the night he fled the palace."
"Soren fled alone." Alpha Kieran said. "Because the rogue king already has her."
Both princes stared at him in surprise.
"How do you know he has her?" Cassian asked.
"This morning I spoke with Ayla’s mother and she confessed something to me she has known for quite a while. I honestly do not blame her for never having the courage to come to me with it because who would have thought."
He sighed, raising his eyes to meet the expectant gazes of his sons.
"Alistair, Master Aldric’s apprentice is an informant for the rogue king. He has been working with Soren for a really long time and Brenna mentioned he had showed particular, unfounded interest in Ayla. We all know why now."
Damon’s jaw tightened.
He should have figured it out, he thought. He had always known that Alistair was up to no good especially after Ayla told him about how he covered up for the deaths of the men who tried to rape her. He should have known it was for a purpose.
"Then why are we doing nothing now?" Damon demanded. "Why would you lock up Ares when he..."
"Would your brother have taken my word for it?" Alpha Kieran cut in. "Would Ares have listened to me and not gone charging into what could have been his own death?"
Damon opened his mouth and closed it. He knew it was useless to argue the truth and so did Cassian.
Ares would have gone either way and he would have gotten himself killed.
"Besides." Alpha Kieran rose from his desk. "Who says I am not doing anything about it?"
"What do you mean?" Cassian asked.
"Sons" Alpha Kieran sighed. "I would not leave my own daughter in the hands of those animals. I already sent a letter by rider this morning to the rogue king’s camp. I have asked him to meet for a treaty of peace."
...
Miranda, the priestess paced back and forth in her chambers.
"What does Kieran know exactly?" The man asked her.
"Nothing. He has never had a strong enough mind which is why you and I need to figure out a way to get the girl back." she said.
"My daughter is in prison for trying to kill her. If you can figure out a way to get her out of there then I will help you, Miranda."
"Henry" she whirled on him, her eyes wide. "We do not have time for this. He has her... do you know what that means? Everything that we have worked so hard to hide is going to come to light and the Alpha hierarchy as we know it will be done and gone. Do you really want that to happen?"
"I do not give a fuck about the Alpha’s hierarchy but I care about my daughter and I have not been allowed to see her ever since she was thrown into the dungeons. Speak to the Alpha for me... she is unimportant now in the grand scheme of things and you know this."
"She tried to kill his daughter. Kieran is not that merciful, Henry."
"Then I cannot help you with what you want."
The man turned around to leave but Miranda’s voice stopped him in his tracks.
"You will help me."
"I hope to the goddess that you are not about to threaten me."
Miranda neared him.
"I am the reason you are where you are today. I am the reason you are not sharing a prison cell with your daughter and I am the reason she is still alive instead of hanging from the gallows like she is supposed to be doing. Her actions affected not just the Omega but also Prince Damon."
"You mean Kieran’s bastard"
"Bastard or not, he is still a prince. Still acknowledged as Kieran’s child and he almost died trying to save the life of the girl your daughter poisoned so if I were you, I will not try to get on my bad side."
Henry looked at her for moment, his jaw working in anger.
"What do you need from me?"
"The Alpha council need to be summoned. I need you to send out riders for them discreetly. Tell them it is urgent... tell them the Omega Dualis is back and we need to act fast."
