Naruto: God of Shinobi

37. Too Many Survivors

Chapter 37: Too Many Survivors

The main hall was larger than the entrance chamber.

The walls rose three stories before they met the ceiling, and the torches set into them at intervals had been burning for hours, which meant they had settled into their duration, the flames steady and low and orange, past the point of the bright establishment-burning of freshly lit torches and into the long even burn of ones that had committed. Banners hung from the upper walls. The red and white of the Leaf. At the center of each one, the spiral. The Uzumaki symbol, woven into the fabric in thread that caught the torchlight and held it.

Naruto walked in and saw the banners and said nothing.

Teams were already gathered on the floor. Team 10 together, Shikamaru with his hands in his pockets and his eyes half-closed, Choji eating, Ino standing with her arms crossed and the particular expression of someone who had recently revised an estimate about another person and was still working through what the revision meant. Team 8: Kiba with his dog on his shoulder, Hinata standing slightly behind the others, Shino in his hood with his hands in his sleeves. Team Guy: Lee with his hands at his sides and his posture the posture of someone for whom standing correctly was not a habit but a practice, Tenten with her arms crossed, Neji with his arms crossed and his pale eyes already moving across the room filing everything. The Sand siblings: Temari with her fan folded behind her, Kankuro still in his paint, Gaara apart from both of them, standing still in the way that things stood still when their stillness was not rest but the absence of anything they considered worth moving for. Kabuto's team at the far wall, Kabuto with his hands in his pockets and his smile in place. Dosu's team near the doors, Dosu with his arms at his sides, Kin behind him, Zaku with his arms in wrappings and the expression of someone who had recently had bones broken and had not forgiven the fact.

Naruto walked to the wall. He put his back against it. His hands went into his pockets. He looked at the floor.

Sasuke stopped beside him. His neck was throbbing. The curse mark was warm against his skin in a way that was not the warmth of temperature. He kept his face blank. He kept his hand away from his neck.

Sakura stopped on Naruto's other side. She looked at Sasuke. She looked at the way his jaw was set. She looked at his neck. She said nothing yet.

The Third Hokage stepped forward on the raised platform at the far end of the hall. He was old and he was small and neither of those things changed the way a room listened to him when he spoke, which was completely.

"Congratulations on passing the second exam," he said. "You have survived the Forest of Death. You have demonstrated the strength and the will to reach this place."

He paused. His eyes moved across the gathered genin with the patient attention of someone who had been doing this for decades and still looked at each face.

"But the Chunin Exams are not over. They have just begun."

Kiba raised his hand. "Yeah, so what exactly is the point of all this? We survived the forest. We fought other teams. We got both scrolls. What else do you want from us?"

Tenten nodded. "That is a fair question. We already proved we can survive. We proved we can work together. We made it to the tower."

The Hokage smiled. Small. The smile of someone who had heard this question in various forms for thirty years.

"The Chunin Exams are not about survival," he said. "They are not about teamwork. Those are foundations. Prerequisites. What we are testing in the third exam is something else entirely."

He stepped to the edge of the platform.

"A Chunin is not a stronger genin. A Chunin is someone who can be trusted with responsibility. With the lives of the people under their command. With the reputation of the village in the eyes of clients and daimyos and other villages. The Chunin Exams exist to identify who among you has that capacity."

Kiba frowned. "So we have to fight in front of an audience to prove we can lead people?"

"The audience is part of the test," the Hokage said. "Clients attend these exams. Daimyos attend. They make decisions about which villages to hire based on what they see here. If you cannot perform under the weight of observation, you cannot represent the Leaf in the field."

Tenten crossed her arms. "That is a lot of politics for a fighting exam."

"It is," the Hokage said. "That is the nature of being a Chunin. You are not just a fighter. You are a representative. A leader. A face of your village. The exam tests all of those things simultaneously."

Shikamaru exhaled through his nose. "Troublesome."

The Hokage looked at him. "You think so?"

"I think most things are troublesome."

Some of the genin laughed. Naruto did not. He was looking at the banners. At the spiral on each one. He looked at them the way he looked at things that belonged to him and had been kept somewhere he could not reach.

The Hokage continued. "The third exam is a tournament. Held in an open arena, in front of an audience. Winners are promoted. Losers return to their villages and train for another year. There is no shame in losing. There is only the fact of it."

Kiba raised his hand again. "One on one? No teammates?"

"That is correct."

"And if we lose?"

"Then you are not ready."

Kiba looked around the hall. His eyes landed on Naruto. Naruto did not look back.

The Hokage stepped back from the edge of the platform. His voice remained level. "That is the purpose of the Chunin Exams. Not to find the strongest genin. To find the ones who are ready for what strength is asked to carry."

The hall was quiet. The torches burned. Nobody spoke.

"Any questions?"

No one spoke.

The Hokage stepped back. He nodded toward the side of the platform.

A man stepped forward. He was pale in the specific way of someone whose pallor was chronic rather than situational, dark circles under his eyes that had been dark for a long time, a sword at his side that moved with him like it was part of his weight. He coughed into his fist before he reached the front of the platform. The cough was dry and carried in the stone room.

"I am Hayate Gekko," he said. His voice was thin but it was precise, each word placed clearly. "I am the proctor for the third exam but before that I will be the proctor for the preliminary matches."

Kiba frowned. "Preliminary matches. What does that mean?"

Hayate coughed once more. "More of you passed the second exam than was expected. Considerably more. The third exam is designed for eight to twelve participants. We currently have twenty. Before the main tournament can proceed, we need to reduce that number."

Tenten looked around. She was counting. "Twenty-one. So we need to cut it by half, roughly."

"Approximately, yes."

Kiba grinned. His dog shifted on his shoulder. "So we get to fight right now?"

"Correct. One-on-one matches. The winners advance. The losers are eliminated."

"Great," Kiba said. "I have been waiting."

Naruto watched from the wall. His hands were in his pockets. He was watching everyone in the hall the way he watched environments, systematically, filing the posture and the footwork and the way each person held their weight. He was watching Neji. He was watching Gaara. He was watching Kabuto, whose smile had not changed since the exam room.

Hayate coughed. "The matches will be determined randomly. There is no appeal and no substitution. If you are unable to fight, you forfeit, and your opponent advances without a match."

He looked across the floor. His eyes were tired. They were also exact.

"Any questions?"

No one spoke.

"Then we will begin."

Sasuke's hand moved toward his neck.

He caught it before it arrived. He put it back at his side. His jaw tightened by a degree that was not visible unless you were watching closely.

Sakura was watching closely.

She stepped closer. Not close enough to draw attention. Close enough to keep her voice low.

"Sasuke. You are in pain."

"I am fine."

"Your hand just went to your neck."

"It did not."

"I watched it."

Sasuke looked at her. His expression was the expression of someone who had been doing something and been seen doing it and was now deciding how to respond to having been seen. He put his hand in his pocket.

"Sasuke…"

"I said I am fine."

Sakura looked at Naruto. Naruto was watching Sasuke. His face was blank. He said nothing.

She turned back. "If that mark activates during a fight…"

"I am not withdrawing."

"I did not say withdraw. I said if it activates…"

"Mind your own business."

Flat. Cold. The words of someone who had made a decision and did not want the decision examined.

Sakura's face went red. She stepped back. She looked at the floor.

Naruto watched the exchange. He watched Sakura step back. He watched Sasuke's hand in his pocket. He did not intervene. It was not his conversation to enter.

Anko Mitarashi had moved from near the Hokage. She was standing closer now, her eyes on Sasuke's neck, on the collar pulled up to cover the mark. She had applied a suppression seal in the forest. She knew what the seal had been covering. She knew what it was doing now.

"The curse mark," she said. Not loudly. Toward the Hokage as much as toward Sasuke. "It is reacting to his chakra. The excitement of the fight, the adrenaline, the intent. If he engages in serious combat it could activate. He could lose control of himself entirely."

The Hokage looked at Sasuke. He let the look hold for a moment.

"What do you want to do?"

Sasuke did not pause. "I want to fight."

The Hokage looked at Anko. She shook her head, a small movement, the movement of someone who had given the information and was done trying to change the outcome.

"It is his choice," the Hokage said.

Sasuke stepped forward. He walked to the center of the floor. He stopped. His arms crossed. His face settled into the blankness he used when he was working to feel nothing, which was the expression he wore when he was feeling the most.

The mark throbbed. He did not move his hand toward it.

He was ready.

Hayate looked at the assembled genin. "Before we begin. Are there any withdrawals?"

Kabuto raised his hand.

His smile was the same smile it had been in the exam room. Apologetic. Friendly. Warm in the specific way of warmth that had been constructed rather than generated.

"I withdraw," he said. "I sustained injuries during the second exam. I cannot fight at my full capacity. I would be doing my team a disservice if I advanced in this condition."

Hayate looked at him. "You understand that withdrawing reduces your team. Your teammates can advance with only two members."

"I understand."

He stepped back. His smile did not change. Yoroi looked at him from the side, his face hard. Misumi's expression was the expression of someone who had already processed what was happening and had decided not to say anything about it.

Hayate made a mark on his list. "Kabuto Yakushi withdraws. His team is disqualified. The remaining genin will proceed."

Kabuto moved to the edge of the hall. He stood with his arms crossed and his back against the wall. He looked at the remaining genin with the comfortable attention of someone who had arranged to have nothing to do and was therefore free to watch.

Sakura leaned toward Naruto. "He is not injured. He was fine in the forest. He was fine twenty minutes ago."

"I know."

"Then why is he withdrawing?"

Naruto watched Kabuto. Kabuto's eyes were moving across the remaining genin in the same systematic way that Naruto's had been. The inventory. The filing.

"He got what he came here for," Naruto said.

"Which was?"

A pause. Naruto watched Kabuto for another moment. Kabuto's eyes moved to Naruto's face, found it looking back, and the smile shifted by a fraction too small to name.

"Information," Naruto said.

Sakura looked at Kabuto. He turned his attention back to the center of the floor. His smile was back to its baseline, unchanged, the smile that arrived before the reason for it.

She looked away.

Hayate coughed. "We have twenty genin remaining. The preliminary matches will begin."

The hall went quiet in the way halls went quiet when the thing everyone had been waiting for was about to begin.

Hayate looked at the list. He took a breath. He coughed once, briefly, and it echoed.

"The first match." He looked up. "Sasuke Uchiha versus Yoroi Akado."

Sasuke's neck throbbed. He stepped forward anyway. His arms uncrossed. His hands came to his sides. He walked to the center of the floor with the particular walk of someone who had decided something and was walking toward the consequence of that decision.

Yoroi stepped forward from the far side. His hands were wrapped in bandages to the elbow, the white of them bright in the torchlight. His eyes were flat in a way that was not the flatness of calm. The flatness of someone who had already decided that the outcome was not in question.

They faced each other in the center of the floor.

Naruto watched from the wall. His hands were in his pockets. His face was blank. He watched the way Sasuke stood. The way the weight was distributed. The way the right hand stayed away from the neck. The deliberate management of the body, keeping itself away from the thing that was trying to get in.

Sakura stood beside Naruto. Her hands were clenched against her thighs.

"He should not be doing this," she said. Quiet.

Naruto said nothing.

"He could lose control. He could die."

"He knows that."

Sakura looked at Naruto. His eyes were on Sasuke. On the floor. On Yoroi's wrapped hands. Taking inventory.

"You do not care?"

Naruto looked at her. His eyes were flat. Not cold. Just flat. The flatness of someone who had drawn a line around a thing and was holding to that line.

"He made his choice. I am not his keeper."

Sakura looked back at Sasuke. He was standing in the center of the floor with his arms at his sides and his face blank and his neck throbbing in a way that was invisible to everyone who was not looking for it.

Hayate raised his hand. The hall held the silence of twenty people and three instructors and one Hokage and one man with a sword who coughed before he spoke.

"The rules are simple. You fight until one of you cannot continue. You may not kill your opponent. If I determine that the fight cannot safely continue, I will stop it. The loser is eliminated. The winner advances."

He looked at both of them.

He lowered his hand.

"Begin."

Sasuke moved.
