Chapter 31
Inside one of the baths in Winterfell Castle.
"There's the tub. Here's some soap, and this is called shampoo. Harry made it to wash his hair," Dacey said, pointing with some annoyance at the steaming tub and the bathing supplies.
Harry liked his hair to feel silky and smell good, so he always made sure to use it.
"Wow, you really bathe with hot water," Val said, placing her hand over the water and feeling the steam pass through her fingers.
"Not beyond the Wall?" Dacey asked in confusion.
"It's far too cold for that. It's very difficult to heat the water, and once you take it off the fire, it cools down very quickly. I usually cleaned myself by rubbing myself with snow," Val said, dipping her hand into the water and feeling its warmth.
Dacey didn't know what to say to that. She couldn't help feeling a little sorry for her.
"Come on, take your clothes off and get in," Dacey said, not wanting to continue the subject.
"Hm, aren't you leaving?" Val asked curiously as she undressed.
"What, are you shy?" Dacey said with a laugh as she also began taking off her clothes.
"I'm only worried that you'll be embarrassed," Val said without stopping her hands, undoing the straps of her breastplate before letting it fall.
In less than a minute, both of them were naked in the middle of the bath.
Val looked down at her body before looking at Dacey's. Giving her a satisfied smile, she turned toward the tub before stepping in.
A soft moan escaped her lips as she felt the hot water over her entire body.
Dacey clicked her tongue, having to admit that the bitch surpassed her in every physical aspect.
Stepping into the tub as well, the two ended up facing each other with steam rising from the water.
A tense silence settled between them as their eyes met from time to time.
"So tell me, are we going to have a problem because of Harry?" Val asked softly.
Dacey blinked in disbelief at the blonde's question before showing a somewhat ironic smile.
"I don't think so," Dacey said, looking at her.
"Why? Aren't you jealous?" Val asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I wouldn't say I'm not jealous. It's just that I've already accepted that I'm not going to be his only woman," Dacey said with a smile.
Val looked at Dacey in confusion. Her expression carried a hint of melancholy, but she didn't seem particularly sad.
"I don't want to be Lady Stark, but someone has to fill that position, and I have no doubt Harry's mother is eager to find a candidate. If that's the case, then it doesn't matter whether there's one more or two," Dacey said after noticing Val's confused expression.
"Not to mention that Harry is an incredibly attractive man, and I don't mean his appearance. His magic, his inventions, his charisma, his power... If I were Lady Stark and wanted to have a problem with every woman who wanted to get close to him, it would be a very exhausting life," Dacey said with a faint smile as she looked at Val.
Val looked at her with a bit of disbelief. She hadn't thought there was so much behind that expression.
"Things are complicated around here," Val said with a sigh.
"You have no idea what it's like in the south," Dacey said with a smile as she shook her head.
The tub once again fell into an awkward silence.
"And you... are you quite experienced with men?" Dacey asked with a hint of hesitation.
"Your comment makes it sound like just because I come from beyond the Wall, I sleep with everyone," Val said, looking at her speechlessly.
"Hm, don't you? I'm from Bear Island. It's quite close. I've heard you even had outdoor orgies during celebrations," Dacey said, looking at her with interest.
That was on another level for her. The boldest people on her island only went behind a tree to do it.
"Well, some tribes do things like that, but it's not common. My tribe is much more civilized, although in a camp with so many tribes, everything happens," Val said uncomfortably, since she had seen scenes like that.
"Have you done anything like that?" Dacey asked curiously.
"Of course not!" Val said with a touch of agitation.
"In fact... I'm still a virgin," Val said in a soft murmur, as though she were a little embarrassed.
"Really? How old are you? About nineteen?" Dacey said, looking at her doubtfully. They both seemed to be around the same age.
"Eighteen," Val said.
"Oh," Dacey said with a slight nod.
"Wasn't there anyone you liked?" Dacey asked with a smile.
"It's complicated," Val said as she rubbed her shoulders with the hot water.
"I'm all ears," Dacey said with genuine interest in how things worked beyond the Wall.
"Beyond the Wall, if a man wants a woman, he has to steal her. If she manages to resist him or escapes, then the union doesn't exist. But if she doesn't resist, then they're a couple," Val said, rolling her eyes before explaining.
"That sounds like a crime," Dacey said with a strange look.
"Many times the woman wants the man to steal her, although it certainly isn't always completely consensual," Val said with a slight nod.
"And you, have you ever been stolen?" Dacey asked, frowning slightly.
"They tried, but after a few died trying, no one else attempted it," Val said with a slight smile.
"That bad?" Dacey said, raising her eyebrows.
"Hm, I didn't like any of them. Most of them smelled terrible," Val said with a shrug.
Not everyone was willing to clean themselves with snow. It was uncomfortable, after all, and terrible for maintaining your body temperature.
She had hot food and a warm tent, but not everyone had those same conditions.
"Harry, on the other hand, smells really good. It's a little strange. At first I thought he wore perfume like a woman," Val said with a quiet laugh.
"I thought the same thing at first, but he doesn't. It must have something to do with magic," Dacey said with a laugh and a nod. She had always liked his scent.
"You're quite demanding for a wildling," Dacey said teasingly.
"And you're quite uninhibited for a kneeler," Val said, looking at her with disdain.
"I only kneel when Harry pulls down his pants," Dacey said with a mischievous smile.
Val couldn't help bursting into laughter when she heard that.
"I like you," Val said with a faint smile as she adjusted her legs beneath the water.
"You're not so bad yourself," Dacey said with a small smile as she began washing herself.
"Tell me, what is Bear Island like?" Val asked as she watched and imitated Dacey, picking up a bar of soap and gently rubbing it over her body.
"It's cold and mountainous. Even so, it's a paradise compared to the lands beyond the Wall. Maybe you'll visit it one day," Dacey said as her hand paused and a small smile appeared on her face while thinking about her island.
She looked at the blonde in front of her, awkwardly rubbing the soap over her body, her fingers gliding across her slippery, soap-covered skin.
With faint smiles on their faces, the two continued washing themselves in silence.
A long while later, after finishing washing, Dacey stood up with a yawn before taking a towel and beginning to dry herself.
"You're leaving so soon?" Val asked, opening her eyes as she looked at her.
"I don't think I can do the fun part of bathing with you," Dacey said with a laugh as she wrapped herself in a towel.
Val simply blinked in confusion before realizing what she meant.
Dacey walked over to the furniture at the side and opened a drawer to take out a small garment.
She slipped her legs into it before pulling the underwear up to her waist.
"What's that?" Val asked in surprise, wondering if it was some kind of southern clothing.
"Oh, it's called underwear. Harry made it. It's comfortable, and he says it's sexy," Dacey said as she put on her bra.
"Let me see, give me some," Val said with interest. It really had a certain charm.
"They're mine," Dacey said, looking at her reluctantly.
"Don't be so stingy. Harry can make you more," Val said as she stepped out of the water and walked over.
"Oh, you have them in different colors," Val said, opening the drawer and seeing the underwear stacked by color.
"Dry yourself first," Dacey said, rolling her eyes as she opened another drawer and tossed her a towel.
Val caught it in the air before wrapping herself with it and turning her attention back to the underwear.
"Here, I'll give you the white ones. Tell Harry to make you your own," Dacey said, reluctantly parting with a pair.
Val took them with interest, quickly drying herself and putting on the underwear.
"It's a little tight around the chest," Val said, holding her breasts.
Dacey's gaze darkened as she felt the urge to hit her.
"Does Harry invent a lot of things?" Val asked as she imitated Dacey and got dressed.
"That's right. The train we traveled on was invented by Harry," Dacey said with a nod.
"Really? So that's not something normal in the world?" Val asked, looking at her in surprise.
"Of course not. It only exists here," Dacey said with a hint of pride.
"Oh," Val hummed.
"Oh, you have some very pretty dresses," Val said as she watched Dacey open a wardrobe.
"Don't push your luck," Dacey said, looking at her speechlessly.
....
A little over a week passed before Harry was informed that Lord Manderly had arrived at Winterfell.
Harry set the book aside as he looked down.
Val was sleeping comfortably in his bed, resting her head on his thigh. Her braid had been undone, allowing her blonde hair to spread across the bed.
Without her chainmail and thick leather clothes, now wearing a one-piece dress, her body looked much more curvaceous.
Harry had been tortured by her over the past week, provoking him with her mere presence. For both of them, it had almost become a battle of patience over whether he would give in to her provocations.
He didn't dare accept anything because he was willing to bet she only wanted to reject him.
Setting aside her teasing, as they spent time together, he learned quite a bit about Val, enjoying her company very much. She was clever and quick with her replies.
She adapted to the new place quite quickly.
The first few times, she went for walks around Winter Town, but she quickly grew bored, so she usually followed him around, watching his work with curiosity.
As a result, he ended up teaching her quite a few things.
The different Houses of the North, history, geography, and even herbology, of course the non-magical part, helping him grind plants, light the cauldron, and control the temperature.
Everything was very condensed so she could get a general idea. Even so, he had to admit that he enjoyed it a little, most likely because of her beauty and the dirty jokes they made while he taught her.
Besides training with the others, she was always in the tower. She had become friends with Hedwig and usually fed her.
His family also seemed to react positively to her presence, although Val herself didn't seem particularly interested in other people.
She did seem to respond well to his family because she realized they were important to Harry.
Reaching out his hand, Harry poked her soft cheek before gently caressing it, noticing her eyes tremble before opening and looking directly at him.
Her beautiful eyes, blue like ancient ice, looked straight at him in silence. When she noticed his hand stop caressing her, she narrowed her eyes slightly.
"Come on, keep going. Pretend I'm still asleep," Val said as she closed her eyes and formed a small smile.
"As much as I'd like to continue that game, a visitor I've been expecting has arrived," Harry said with a laugh as he looked at her.
"What a shame," Val said, crawling across Harry's body before sitting astride him.
"I think I'm good at pretending to be asleep. Maybe you could imagine something interesting," Val said, bringing her face closer to Harry's, their lips barely brushing for an instant.
Her gaze was seductive, and her slow, gentle words almost tickled him.
Although he wanted nothing more than to taste those red lips, his Occlumency allowed him to keep his emotions under control and look at her calmly, although there wasn't much he could do about his physical reactions.
Which Val, of course, noticed, placing her hand on his chest before pulling away with an amused look.
Harry felt that Val was close to admitting defeat in this game of seduction, or so he hoped, because he himself felt he was close to giving in.
Getting out of bed, he turned his head to see her sitting back on her heels, her knees apart, with her legs folded back and her knees apart.
The white dress had ridden up slightly, revealing part of her thighs. A faint smile appeared on her lips as she raised an eyebrow.
"Don't cause trouble," Harry said, looking at her before leaving. Shaking his head, he sighed.
It seemed he would have to go for a walk and enjoy some of the cold breeze coming from the north before receiving his guests.
....
House Manderly could easily be called the wealthiest House in the North, and they possessed both merchant ships and warships.
According to his father, House Manderly was loyal, but Harry sometimes found it difficult to consider his father's opinion reliable.
Lord Manderly's escort entered first as they surrounded a large carriage.
A soldier quickly opened the door before a large leg appeared. The rest of the man's body soon followed, making Harry somewhat surprised.
A fat man in green clothes with a friendly smile stood a few meters away, looking at them.
But he quickly stepped aside as two young ladies got out of the carriage and looked at the castle curiously before fixing their eyes on him.
He assumed they were Wyman Manderly's granddaughters.
Even without knowing the history of this House, it was difficult to associate them with the North based on their appearance.
Still being only the heir, he let his father greet them before inviting them inside. The whole time, he remained silent, merely observing them.
Naturally, a banquet was held, during which he learned that besides the three of them, there was another man who was also quite large, Wendel Manderly, Wyman's son.
Harry didn't insist on taking the initiative in the conversation. He would let them speak with his father, and his turn would come the next day.
He planned to amaze the entire group with his train before moving on to deeper matters.
Along the way, he would, of course, find out where their loyalty lay.
He only hoped it was in the right place, since House Stark currently depended heavily on their taxes for monetary income.
Not to mention that all exports passed through their docks.
And honestly, he couldn't think of what to do if they weren't loyal. Being disloyal to his House didn't immediately make them villains.
He supposed he could only try to negotiate with them and remain on guard.
The banquet lasted until late into the night. The moon shone brightly when all the guests were escorted to the guest house.
The next day, Harry put on some nice clothes before heading downstairs, followed by Val.
Dressed in leather armor with a sword at her waist, half-covered by a cloak, she looked quite attractive.
Feeling his gaze, Val gave him a small smug smile.
Ignoring her, he headed to the guest house. He knew they had finished breakfast not long ago.
"Young Lord, you finally came to see me," Wyman said with a smile when he saw him.
"Were you waiting for me?" Harry said with a smile as he sat in a chair near Wyman. He noticed that Wyman's son and granddaughters were also present.
For some reason, Harry felt that they were all ready to leave.
"Of course, although in reality, you were the one waiting for me. After all, you were the one who asked us to come," Wyman said with a smile, sounding quite confident in his words.
Harry looked at him in surprise for a moment before chuckling. It seemed Wyman was quite a shrewd and calculating lord.
"In fact, I was the one who wanted you to come," Harry admitted with a smile as he looked at the old man with an impressed expression.
"I've heard a lot about you. Grain, livestock, mining, even rumors about an enormous metal beast that runs faster than a horse and roars like a dragon."
"You seem to have taken control of the entire North, with most of the heirs at your side. It wouldn't be wrong to say you control the North, but you still have one uncertainty: House Manderly," Wyman said, more or less guessing Harry's way of thinking.
Harry remained silent for a few seconds before letting out a faint sigh.
"You know, I thought I was rather good at politics. It turns out it was because I'd only been dealing with novices," Harry said with a quiet laugh.
Admiring the insight of the old man before him, who had been able to read his thoughts from hundreds of miles away.
"In these lands, people tend to be very honest and straightforward, without as many intrigues as in the south," Wyman said with a slight nod.
Suddenly, Wyman became serious and looked at Harry.
"House Manderly swore loyalty to House Stark. It has been loyal for nearly a thousand years, and it will continue to be."
"So I renew my loyalty before the future Lord Stark," Wyman said, holding onto one of the chairs as he knelt while looking at Harry.
Not only did Wyman kneel, but his son and granddaughters had also knelt behind him.
Harry looked at him in surprise before adopting a serious expression without stopping them.
"I accept your loyalty," Harry said seriously as he helped Wyman back to his feet.
"You didn't have to be so formal," Harry said, moved by the old man's sincerity.
"Isn't it just a little early? Perhaps when you become Lord Stark, I won't be here anymore," Wyman said with a smile.
"You're making the plans I had seem rather insignificant," Harry said, shaking his head.
"That's alright. In fact, I'm glad you're making them. Your father... is too honorable. He believes he doesn't deserve any reward. He won two wars from which he could have gained benefits for the North, but he didn't," Wyman said, shaking his head.
"That's the reason for constant arguments between us. His friendship with Robert... I don't know how good it really is," Harry said with an annoyed snort.
Wyman's eyes looked at Harry rather strangely when he heard the tone he used to refer to the king.
"But forget it. The plans I had were interesting anyway, so let's do it regardless," Harry said with a chuckle.
"Certainly. I'm looking forward to seeing it as well," Wyman said with interest.
"Wendel, bring the carriage," Wyman said, looking at his son, who nodded seriously and left.
Harry wanted to say it wasn't far away, but after looking at Wyman's stomach, he kept those words to himself.
"Come, girls, greet the future Lord Stark," Wyman said with a laugh.
The two girls let out a small laugh as they approached.
"Lord Harry," Wynafryd said with a smile.
"Lady Wynafryd," Harry said, greeting her with a smile. Looking at her more closely, he noticed they were almost the same age.
Her green hair braided with white pearls immediately caught his attention. Her skin was fair, and her posture was straight and elegant, with kind eyes.
"What beautiful hair," Harry said with a polite smile.
"Thank you. Your eyes are very beautiful as well," Wynafryd said with a gentle smile.
A soft "pff" came from beside her. Her younger sister had clearly found their exchange amusing.
"Wylla, isn't it?" Harry said with a smile.
"Hello, it's a pleasure," Wylla said, extending her hand with a smile.
Harry raised his eyebrows slightly, but eventually reached out and shook her hand. Normally, that would have been discourteous when greeting a lady, but he thought it would be even more discourteous to leave her standing there with her hand outstretched.
At that moment, Wendel arrived with a carriage. Wyman immediately climbed in and invited Harry to ride with them. For convenience, Harry eventually got in together with Val after giving directions.
"And this young lady?" Wyman asked, looking at Val as he finally mentioned her.
"She's my guard, although at night I sometimes wonder if she's my shadow," Harry joked.
Val looked at Harry with one eyebrow raised, not at all impressed by his joke.
"She's truly beautiful. It's no wonder she's always with you," Wyman said with a laugh.
"That can't be denied, although don't just look at her pretty face. She's truly fierce with a sword," Harry said with a chuckle.
"Watching women fight has a certain charm," Wyman said with a smile.
Harry chatted idly with Wyman for a few minutes until they arrived at the station.
As he stepped out of the carriage, Wyman looked around, seeing the station, which had a rather strange design in his opinion. To the left was a long line of metal carriages resting on rails.
He wondered if that was what the rumors were about, although he thought it would require many horses to move it.
Harry led the group into the station, climbing the stairs. The four members of House Manderly finally saw the locomotive.
"Woah! That's a lot of iron," Wyman said in surprise.
"It's made from a mixture of steel and iron," Harry said, looking at him.
"It must be very heavy," Wylla said in amazement as she walked over to touch it curiously.
"My, you've spent a fortune on this, not to mention I have no idea how you made it," Wyman said, looking at Harry in surprise.
He truly wanted to hear someone say again that the North was poor. The cost of producing so much iron and steel was unsustainable for most Houses in Westeros.
"Making the locomotive, which is what you're looking at now, isn't that difficult or expensive. The difficult part is the railway," Harry said, leading them to the edge and pointing at the steel rails.
"Why?" Wyman asked in confusion.
"For now, let's get on, and you'll understand," Harry said with a smile as he led them toward the passenger car.
Harry spoke with the crew and told them they were ready. They had arrived the previous day, a little before House Manderly.
At Harry's command, the boiler, which was already lit, was fed with coal and supplied with oxygen.
A loud whistle soon echoed, startling everyone, before a faint mechanical sound came from beneath the floor.
"What was that?" Wyman asked curiously.
"Look out the window," Harry said, pointing.
Wyman turned to look and watched in amazement as they began to move. He couldn't imagine what force could move something so heavy.
Unable to look away, he watched with even greater astonishment as they gradually accelerated.
In his younger days, he had been a knight, something quite unusual in the North. He had loved riding at full speed.
So he knew exactly how fast a horse could run, and right now he felt as though he were riding one at full speed. Only, unlike a horse, which tired after just a few minutes, the locomotive showed no sign of slowing down.
"This... is incredible. I'd heard people call you 'the Wise,' but I never really took it seriously. Now I think that title doesn't truly express your brilliance for creating something like this," Wyman said with sincere amazement. He considered himself an intelligent man, yet he couldn't even begin to imagine how it worked. The only explanation his ignorance led him to was magic.
Harry merely chuckled as he listened to his monologue, which quickly turned into questions about how long it could run and how much cargo it could carry.
Wyman's mind raced as he thought about all the possibilities.
This machine would revolutionize transportation and freight. The world would become smaller.
Not only that, military deployment would become much faster. In the previous war, it had taken more than a month to gather the army. Now they could do it in less than half that time if they had machines like this in strategic locations.
"So this was your plan to leave me in shock. I have to say, you truly succeeded. I still find it hard to believe I'm not dreaming," Wyman said, looking at Harry intently.
"Just wait. My plan is to extend the railway all the way to White Harbor. It will just take a few more years."
"We're currently expanding the railway to Castle Black and Moat Cailin," Harry said, briefly telling him about his plans.
"Hm, its usefulness increases the more connections it has. Now I understand why you said the railway is the hardest part," Wyman said, beginning to understand the enormous amount of work that had gone into it.
The courage Harry had shown to begin this project, laying the first rails and watching the money disappear without immediate results, was astonishing to think about.
"Yes, it took us almost three years just to connect Steam Town with Winterfell," Harry said with a nod.
"It's a job that takes time, but it's worth it," Wyman said without hesitation.
The journey lasted five hours, but none of them seemed bored. Neither Wyman, nor his son, nor his granddaughters, who chatted while looking at the scenery or commenting on the things they saw.
They had never been so far north before.
Harry took the opportunity to mention that he needed a ship to travel to Essos. Wyman immediately assured him that all he had to do was come, and his fastest ship would be ready.
Once they arrived at their destination, Harry took them to a banquet Philip had prepared. They talked for a while, and Harry showed them the city.
It wasn't anything particularly impressive, but it continued to grow larger and larger.
After walking around for a while, Harry took them back, making use of the trip to transport a load of materials.
When they returned to Winterfell that night, there was another banquet. Seeing the way Wyman ate, Harry wasn't surprised that he was so fat.
The four members of House Manderly stayed at Winterfell for three more days. Harry spent quite a bit of time with Wyman and his granddaughters.
He took the younger girls riding with Val and Dacey, and also introduced them to Hedwig, which made them quite happy.
There really wasn't much for young girls to do in Winterfell. They seemed to get along better with Sansa, talking about the usual lessons taught by the Septas.
Since House Manderly followed the Seven.
The most interesting part was talking with Wyman. The port received a great deal of important information.
He learned about the royal court, the Lannisters, Jon Arryn, and even Petyr Baelish, who turned out not to be as impressive as he had imagined.
That made him question his reasons for spying on the North. Unfortunately, Wyman didn't know much about his background, so Harry could only wait, or ask his parents.
One rather interesting piece of information was that, apparently, two children of the previous king were in Essos, seeking allies to reclaim the throne.
Harry thought it was complete nonsense. There were no dragons left in the world, and without them, Westeros would never kneel the way it had hundreds of years ago.
But this situation made him realize once again that they had no source of information.
The problem was that he truly couldn't think of a way to solve it.
With House Manderly's departure, the castle returned to relative peace.
Those days had been quite rainy, so almost no one had gone out to train.
Harry stood in his room in the tower, looking out the window. His brow was slightly furrowed as he saw that the courtyard had filled with mud, something that usually happened when it rained and people constantly walked across it.
He had been so busy improving the North outside his home that he had forgotten to improve his own home. Perhaps it was time to remodel the castle a little.
Taking out a sheet of paper, Harry quickly wrote a letter to Philip before giving it to Hedwig, who complained about having to go out in the rain.
Harry simply smiled and stroked her before casting a spell to repel the water.
After giving his fingers one last peck, Hedwig flew off to deliver the letter.
Although Harry didn't know it, another letter bearing the Stark seal was being delivered to the south of the continent.
