Chapter 167
The room had finally gone quiet.
The soft hum of the jet engines was almost soothing now, blending with the gentle rhythm of Emilia’s breathing.
She was asleep. Completely and utterly asleep.
Adrian lay beside her, one arm tucked beneath her head while the other rested loosely around her waist.
The duvet was pulled over them, warm and heavy enough to make the world outside the bedroom feel impossibly far away.
He looked down at her.
Her hair had fallen messily around her face, with several strands resting across her cheek. Without waking her, Adrian carefully brushed them away. He stared at her swollen full lips.
She didn’t move. Not even slightly.
A tiny smile touched his mouth. She was completely wreaked in the best way.
She looked peaceful.
She was soft, and unaware of the world.
Adrian liked seeing her this way. Her lashes rested against her cheeks, and her lips were slightly parted.
She breathed slowly, and deeply, completely trusting the room around her.
Adrian reached up and gently brushed another strand of hair away.
He smiled. "Sweetheart." He called gently.
She didn’t answer.
His smile widened. "You really wore yourself out." He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. Then he pulled her closer.
Emilia responded instinctively.
Her body shifted toward him, with her head nestling more securely against his chest.
Adrian’s expression softened.
He adjusted the pillow beneath her head, then he pulled the duvet higher over her shoulder.
"There."
She made the faintest sound. Something between a sigh and a sleepy hum. His hand moved slowly along her back.
He stayed there for a while, just holding her.
He could have slept immediately. He was exhausted too. But he found himself unwilling to close his eyes.
This moment was too peaceful.
After everything they’d been through, waking up beside her wasn’t something he took for granted.
There had been nights when he wondered whether he’d ever get another chance. Another chance to hear her laugh. Another chance to hold her. Another chance to simply be beside her without fear of someone taking that away.
Now she was here, im his arms, on his plane, and sleeping as though she belonged there.
Adrian looked at her again. A quiet thought crossed his mind. His fingers brushed lightly over her hair.
"You’re home," he whispered.
Emilia stirred.
Adrian stopped. Her brows drew together for half a second, then she relaxed again.
He kissed her forehead once more. Then finally allowed his eyes to close.
His arm remained around her, and within minutes, he was asleep too.
........
Adrian’s phone vibrated. His brows pulled together from sleep.
He didn’t move.
The phone vibrated again. His eyes opened slowly. For several seconds, he had no idea where he was.
He glanced toward the bedside table. The phone was vibrating again. He reached for it carefully, making sure not to disturb Emilia.
Adrian stared at the screen. It was Christain.
He answered. "Yes?"
Christian’s voice came through immediately. "Finally."
Adrian closed his eyes. "What?"
"I’ve been calling you."
"I was sleeping."
There was a pause.
Christian sounded genuinely caught off guard. "You were sleeping?"
"Yes." Adrian glanced down at Emilia.
Christian nodded at the other end. "That’s new."
Adrian looked at the small screen. "What do you want?"
"To know what you and Emilia want for dinner."
Adrian glanced toward the clock. They had less than an hour until landing. He had completely forgotten about dinner.
That menas they have been asleep for the past four hours.
Christian continued. "I already asked the chef to prepare something for me, but I figured you might want something before we land."
Adrian rubbed his forehead. He looked down at Emilia. She was still asleep. Completely unaware of the conversation happening inches away from her.
Christian lowered his voice dramatically. "Unless you two are busy."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "Christian."
He turned slightly toward Emilia, and rubbed her shoulder blade softly. His voice softened. "What would you want to eat, sweetheart?"
He asked, still rubbing her.
She didn’t answer.
Adrian waited. "Emilia?"
She said nothing.
"Sweetheart." He called, still rubbing her arm.
Her brows moved, and her lips parted. She mumbled something completely incomprehensible.
Adrian leaned closer. "What?"
She made another sleepy sound. "Mm... pasta.".
Christian was silent for a second. Then, he asked. "Did she just say pasta?"
Adrian nodded even though Christian couldn’t see him. "Yes."
"What kind?"
Adrian looked down at her.
"What kind of pasta, sweetheart?"
Emilia’s eyes remained closed. "White..."
"White?"
"Mm-hm." She shifted closer to him. "White sauce."
Adrian smiled. "White sauce." He reported back to Christain.
Christian repeated it. "Okay. Pasta with white sauce."
Adrian waited. Emilia’s arm slid around his waist. She tucked herself closer to him. Then she mumbled something else.
Adrian looked down. "What else, baby?"
She whispered, "Chicken."
"Chicken." He patiently reported back to Christain.
Christian sighed dramatically. "Anything else?"
Adrian looked at Emilia. "Anything else, sweetheart?"
She shook her head. Then, after a few seconds, she added. "Garlic bread."
Adrian smiled. He drew an absent minded circle on her arm. "Garlic bread."
Christian made a note. "Okay. Pasta, white sauce, chicken, garlic bread."
"Yes."
"And dessert?"
Adrian looked down at her again. She was already drifting deeper into sleep. "Do you want dessert, sweetheart?"
Emilia didn’t answer.
Adrian waited, and he got. othing.
He smiled, and spoke into the phone."She doesn’t know." He glanced at the clock.
Christian’s voice became quieter. "I’ll tell the chef."
"Thank you."
"You’re welcome." Christian continued. "Anyway, I’ll let you get back to your sleeping beauty."
"Goodbye, Christian."
"Goodbye, Romeo."
The call ended.
Adrian placed the phone back on the table. He turned toward Emilia, and then he slipped his arm around her again.
Emilia immediately moved closer.
Her cheek pressed against his chest, and her fingers curled lightly into the fabric of his shirt. She sighed contendently.
Adrian settled back against the pillows.
The jet continued through the sky.
He looked at the clock. Fifty-two minutes. He could wake her later. For now, he let her sleep.
His fingers moved gently through her hair.
He watched her for another few minutes, then his eyes drifted closed.
....
Forty minutes later, the bedroom lights gradually brightened. A soft chime sounded from somewhere outside.
Emilia moved.
Her nose scrunched slightly.
She pulled the duvet closer.
Adrian opened his eyes. "Sweetheart."
She made a sleepy sound.
"We’re landing soon."
"No."
Adrian smiled. "Yes."
She shook her head against his chest. "I don’t want to."
"You have to wake up."
"No."
"Emilia."
"Five minutes."
He laughed quietly.
"Give me another hour."
"We’re landing in thirty minutes."
She opened one eye. "Already?"
"Yes."
She stared at him, then closed it again. "Wake me when we land."
"I can’t."
"Why?"
"Because I don’t want you waking up on the ground."
She frowned softly. "Why?"
"Because you need to put your seatbelt on."
She opened both eyes this time.
"Oh."
He smiled.
Her expression softened. "Hi."
"How do you feel now?"
She thought about it. "Tired." She yawned.
Adrian tucked her hair behind her ear. "Are you hungry?"
She blinked. "A little." She covered her face, remembring a few words she mumured while asleep. "Oh my God. Did you ask me about dinner?"
Adrian laughed. "You were very decisive."
"I was asleep."
"You still managed to order dinner."
She peeked at him through her fingers. "Did I say anything embarrassing?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
She lowered her hands. She tucked herself against him again.
Adrian wrapped his arms around her. "Comfortable?"
"Very."
"You have to get dressed soon."
She groaned. "Do I?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"You won’t want to be held by the British museum because of how perfect you are, would you?"
She giggled at the joke, and shook her head.
"Then you have to dress up. It doesn’t hide your perfection but at least, you can get away with it."
She smiled against his chest. She reached up and touched his face. Her fingers traced his jaw.
She kissed his cheek, said nothing, and then settled back against him.
Adrian kissed her forehead. "Sleep for a few more minutes."
She nodded.
He pulled the duvet higher. Her body curled instinctively into his.
"I love you, Adrian."
The words settled softly between them.
For a moment, Adrian didn’t move.
Emilia blinked sleepily against his chest, almost as if she hadn’t realized the weight of what she’d just said.
However, Adrian had.
His eyes softened in a way she had never seen before, and the smallest smile touched his mouth.
This smile was quieter, warmer, and almost boyish. As though a part of him had heard something it had been waiting a very long time to hear.
Emilia watched him.
His hand moved slowly through her hair. Then, without a word, Adrian shifted.
He rolled gently over her, careful not to put his weight on her, trapping her softly between his arms.
Emilia looked up at him.
The duvet had slipped slightly around them.
He simply looked at her. Really looked at her. As if he was making sure she was real.
His heart had started beating faster. It surprised him. One sleepy sentence from Emilia had managed to do this to him
.
His stomach twisted slightly with anticipation, and hope. Along with something dangerously close to happiness.
"Are you sure?" he asked softly. His voice was quieter than usual.
Emilia blinked. "What?"
He searched her eyes. "About what you said."
For a second, Emilia only looked at him. Her expression softened.
"You ask very serious questions for someone who woke me up thirty minutes before landing."
A small laugh escaped him, but his eyes never left hers.
Emilia reached up and touched his face. Her fingers moved slowly along his jaw. "I wouldn’t say it if I wasn’t sure."
Adrian looked at her for another moment. Then he lowered his head and kissed her forehead.
He gave her a slow kiss. She had handed him something precious. When he lifted his head again, there was still that smile.
That quiet, impossible smile.
Emilia looked at him curiously. "What?"
He shook his head slightly. "Nothing."
"That isn’t true."
Adrian looked at her. He suddenly seemed younger somehow.
"I’m just happy," he admitted.
The honesty of it made Emilia’s chest ache softly.
She smiled.
Then she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Adrian lowered himself slightly, and she held him.
The embrace was warm, and simple.
The moment was heartwarming, with just two people lying thousands of feet above the clouds, holding each other as though the rest of the world had become very small.
Adrian buried his face briefly against her neck and closed his eyes.
Emilia’s fingers moved through his hair. "I love you, Adrian." she whispered again.
This time, Adrian laughed quietly.
A real laugh. Soft and full of disbelief.
He lifted his head and looked at her. Then his hand moved gently over her cheek. "And I love you, Emilia."
Outside the window, the clouds drifted quietly beneath them.
